Ninja Gaiden/Black on the OG Xbox.
Any other contenders? Bayonetta? God of War? DmC?
Ninja Gaiden/Black on the OG Xbox.
Absofuckinglutely. Though NG2 is on another level when everything comes together right. But complete package it's NGB no doubt.
Inb4 the distinction between hack n slash and beatemup.
lol @ GoW.
Bayonetta 2, easily.
Although NGB its an incredible game and DMC 3 and 4 are pretty damn good too, IMO Bayonetta 2 is as good as you can get in the genre.
The holy trinity is usually considered Ninja Gaiden Black, Devil May Cry 3, and Bayonetta.
Of those, I think Ninja Gaiden Black is the best, and it'd be my pick, too.
Also, Metal Gear Rising is supposed to be pretty good.
Bayo 2 after that would be ninja gaiden, but really no other game has as great combat as bayo2
and GoW? lol

Agreed. While Ninja Gaiden 2 might be a flawed gem overall, that combat system is phenomenal. Still the best in genre in my opinion.
God Of War 3, amazing! Most epic boss fights and just really fun to play. Cestus feel oh so good.
I loved that game too, and the first battle with Poseidon was amazing to kick off a great game.
Ninja Gaiden Black on the OG Xbox is my answer as well. Only ones close in my opinion are Devil May Cry 3 and Bayonetta 2.
God of War shouldn't even be in the same sentence as NGB, it is literally a button masher, while NGS is all about timing and takes actual skill to advance through the game. Just my take after playing both series.
I loved that game too, and the first battle with Poseidon was amazing to kick off a great game.
I seen the remastered version is on sale for only $19, might get that next month and God of War 3 back on PS3 was a lot fun and you're right though, the fight with Poseidon was off the chains!
The term Hack and Slash could also refer to games like Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance, Diablo 3, D & D Heroes, Champions of Norrath, but those are Hack and Slash RPG's, and it sounds like your talking about adventure hack and slashers.
So if thats the case, then i would have to say the God of War series is without a doubt the best.

Definitely bro.
I always give the edge to NGB for a number of reasons. It has the better level design. It has much better balance and difficulty scaling. The bosses are a test of the players skill rather than a test of patience. And of course its combat system is fucking top notch.
But when it comes down to it NG2s battle system is the apex of what they started with NGB. If only the Itagaki x Tecmo drama wasn't a thing, who knows what might have been.

Yeah the Poseidon battle was really something never seen before. Next week there may be some new mindblowing magic from SSM (fingers crossed)

Considering some of the stuff they cut from Bayonetta 1, Bayonetta 1 would still hold the edge.
And Devil May Cry 4's actual combat engine is divine, no quick time event finishers, and the sheer amount of versatility to what Dante is in that game is just godlike. Pure custom combos there aren't games better than what DMC3 and 4 do.
Ninja Gaiden Black and some of the good X-Men games. If we count H&S RPGs then Diablo 2 is up there as well.

I feel Sigma 2 was a huge missed opportunity. They could have ironed out the games flaws. Instead they change the fundamentals of the combat (arguably for the worse) and add in a bunch of unnecessary fluff.

Agreed. I'll give MGR a nod with Bayonetta

That's Mr. Bitchmade Hayashi for ya. Such a hack.
Then the fool had the stones to say that NG2 and Bayonetta are "outdated" before going on to make the game that pretends to be Ninja Gaiden 3.
What a fucking joke.

I smiled constantly during that battle.

I'm not buying it again, but I love that game.
Ninja Gaiden/Black most def. Bought that junior year and highschool, and played it like a fiend. Sadly, did not find NG2 to be very good, and it was kind of put on the shelf and forgotten before I sold my 360.
Ninja Gaiden (OG XBox) and Devil May Cry
I also urge people to checkout Mark of the Ninja. It's a ninja platformer, and it's much better than it looks. It requires tactical approaches and stealth. The stealth system includes dynamic light and dark areas, places to hide, destructible lights, and hiding bodies. You obviously get a sword, but you can also so things like climb walls, throw ninja stars. and use a grappling hook. The ninja even has a robust upgrade system, including passive upgrades, new skills, distraction items, new weapons, and RPG like clothing with attribute modifiers, all of which you can use to customize for each missions requirements. It is a good game.
I just got ninja Gaiden Sigma on Vita because @jg4xchamp: can't stop gushing about it on handheld. :p
This is your level of sacrilege in video form:
@ConanTheStoner: dying laughing. I remember when that came out after the popularity of the Snes version and thinking my god... Who could ever want to play such a thing?
@getyeryayasout: and I are master Vita Ninjas... Don't hate.
Edit... God those frame rates are buttery smooth on Master Fighter.
Oh, I thought we were talking about top-tier stuff from the 2d era like D&D Shadow over Mystara, Knights of the Round, and Golden Axe. But this is just 3d. Carry on.
Ninja Gaiden has a great combo system, but I always enjoyed DMC more. GOW3 is a better game as a whole than the other hack n slash titles I've played.
If I had to choose the absolute best hack n slash experience, however, I'd pick Demon's Souls above all those games that are solely defined by that genre. Nioh might be the game that changed that however, I loved to demo.
Damn, I quite enjoy this kind of game but for some reason I'm struggling to find examples. I guess I've been playing too many shooters lately lol. I really enjoyed Diablo 3, I like the Devil MAy Cry games, 4th is probably my favorite. I really enjoyed Lords of Shadow 1, haven't finished the 2nd yet.
The recent Transformers game from Platinum has excellent gameplay. Simple yet deep and satisfying enough. Lot of different possible combos too. Ninja Gaiden I think I had the Black re-release on the 360, but my memory is fuzzy on that one....I know I own a Ninja Gaiden game on the 360, I know that I really enjoyed it, but alas for various reason I never finished it.....but I remember it was very good.
