Funny I think the exact opposite. Portal is overrated (far more simple than I expected) and the HL1/2 are still the best single player shooter campaigns to date.
Sorry TC.... Blizzard blows the doors off of everyone else.

I would say that if they had the same Devs who made Diablo and Starcraft all of whom ether quit or got fired,blizzard is just a big pile of trash as of now.
Yeah since Half life had more than 50 awards plus GOTY to almost ALL sites/magazines in planet. Voted as the game of the decade from numerous sites and magazines. Followed by HL2 that was kinda revolutionary (physics and story on FPS genre). We add the counter strike, one of the most well--known MP around the world for so many years , i think Valve deserves a title as one of the best Americans developers ever.
Exactly the same goes for Blizzard. Diablo (THE revolution on this genre) - Diablo 2 (still many playing this) - Starcraft (Still playing this especially in korea) - World of Warcraft ( Best mmorpg ever made - 10Million Sub) - Warcraft 3 (still playing by many). Many GoTy awards and individual awards. One of the best companies as well.
Both companies games , still playing by gamers in proffessional mode for years now. War3 and Counter strike especially.With thousands of $$ per year to the winners.
Valve and Blizzard are great but at the same time they have great publishing partners who are willing to give the studios long, long, long periods of time to make their games. I mean how long until Valve releases episode 3? Nobodies holding their breath, I'm sure. That's why it's a shame that developers who come out with fantastic games every year or every other year don't get much recognition. Insomniac, for example, is setting itself up to release the extremely ambitious RFOM 2 when just last year they released what many consider the best game on PS3.

I wouldn't say the best ever. best as of this time, yeah. but there are other studios of the past (id, LucasArts) that were just as good in their prime.
