Anyone nervous to buy a mid gen console(XboxX/PSpro) because they might have to buy a new one in 2/3 years.

I know this is kind of a moot point because the industry is shifting, and technology becomes obsolete faster.

I just am used to longer console cycles but with the way things have switched(get it), I don't want to buy one of these next year and then the next E3 it gets announced another console is being released.

@Mercenary848: I get what you mean, I'm not sure yet myself. I would like to wait a year for the OneX so that it drops to $400, but I'm also expecting the next Xbox in 2020-2021 so it would be shitty to pay that amount of cash, and then having to buy a new one. Luckily my games would transfer of course to the next console, but still...

@FastRobby: Yeah, I am not paying more then 250$ for something that wont get any games in tw or three years after its release. Especially when the good games don't even come out until year 3.....

Ps4 pro will be 349€ with game and controller

xbox one x just controller no game 499€

this in november 2017

my opinion. If you have a 4k hdr tv and get ps4 pro or xbox one x you will have a lot of gaming ahead of you.

ps4 pro will keep using 1440p minimum native on patched games checkboard upscaled to 4k which looks pretty stunning on 4k hdr tv

while x1x will run native 4k. (thats why +150 and no game difference price).

But honestly

No matter which one you pick it will give you lots of years in gaming (considering day one ps4 and xbox one will still get games it means both ps4 pro and x1x surelly will last several years)

Yes they might release in 3+ years a new console. Or not. But whatever they release is probably 4k console. No need to worry much for now

Happy with three year cycles to be honest, prefer five though.

I hear you, but honestly that is debatable. Most people wait one year to buy a console. Often times the block buster titles dont come out until year 2 or 3(N64 released in 1996 and ocarana of time 1998, xbox 2001 and halo 2004, wii u late2012 and bayonetta 2 late 2014). The devs honestly spend a year learning the technology and then they start making really good games. The ps2 lasted for a long time, and was still dropping amazing games that competed with the gen that game after it(God of war 2 came out on PS2 when the PS3 had been out for a year). There is def a precedent to show the benefit to long(5-6 years) console cycles

In most things in life I agree 100% my friend, but as far as the gaming industry goes I feel there is a lot of benefit to longer console cycles

I dislike these mid generation upgrades since i first learned about them but on the other hand , as a PC gamer , i like the fact that games wont be stale ( most ) for 5-6 years finally ( graphically mostly speaking )

I think they are planning on the next consoles being BC with the current ones. This has been alluded to by both companies. Would I tell you to gamble on it? No. Especially because even if that's their current plan, they might change their minds. Still, I don't think they are planning on "gens" being these arbitrary sharp boundaries, with a handful of crappy ports to bridge the gap, that they once were. If that's true, then there's no real risk - it would be like worrying about buying a video card today because a new one is coming out in the 3 years. Still, don't dive in on my account and vilify me if I'm wrong!

I guess it depends if the new games will continue to be able to be played on the Scorpio/Pro. Then you have to ask yourself if you really need to be an early adopter or not

No not really although I'm not expecting a new system from these manufacturers for about 3 to 4 years from the release of their last one and I'm ok with that timeframe.

Nope. I didn't buy the PSBone at launch so i dont feel like i have to buy anything in 2 or 3 years at launch. Im an intelligent consumer. I wisely waited before i jumped in this gen. Sat on my pc and now its paying off. I have the best version of the PS4 and ill be getting the xbox that i always wanted in November. You dont have to jump just because companies say jump. Make purchases when the time is right for you

I'll just trade in my Pro once the PS5 arrives. It's most likely gonna have BC with PS4 games.

I wouldn't assume that we're automatically going to get a new console every 2-3 years, at least not from Xbox... Phil Spencer has said numerous times that they aren't going to release a console for the sake of it. It has to be a substantial upgrade and offer something worthwhile.

I spend some $700 every 1.5-2 yrs for a video card so certainly I would buy a new console version when it came out if it's what I wanted.

Hopefully it's a cool transition where the og models are deemed obsolete and the new models become standard.

Not sure how that works though if devs start axing the og models or it stops being manufactured or what.

Sort of. I'm sure there will be backwards compatibility, and, most likely, generous hardware trade-in opportunities at places like Best Buy and Gamestop. As long as BC stays, consoles are fairly easy to trade-in and upgrade at a fraction of the price.

Really, you just have to quantify the enjoyment you will get out of having the best system in a console family for 3~4 years. Most people are fine just sticking with the base systems.

No wonder people freak out about $500 consoles, they have no income.

@Mercenary848:

It's pretty much already been established from both companies that these upgrades aren't going to be treated like graphics cards that you need to constantly upgrade. The Pro and the One X are mainly for elitists.

I don't like the trend. A big part of a console's appeal is that you don't feel the need to upgrade every 2 or 3 years to get the best experience.

Thats janky logic, most of us here have time and disposable income to support our gaming habits. If we didn't we wouldn' be on a gaming board. This is more a debate on the shifting culture towards shorter console lifespans. Although there are benefits(mid gen upgrades), there are a lot of flaws in consoles becoming increasingly obsolete sooner.

I understand that, but developing on consoles is different then PC. Now devs have to learn how to utilize a new console every couple years, instead of dropping a game to get a feel for the platform and then going back to the drawing board and dropping a blockbuster for the system with a full understanding of its limits/potential.

No while Microsoft can currently have the title of the most powerful videogame console ever created. It is a given that Sony could at some point actually release a PlayStation 5. At the same time drop the PlayStation 4 Pro price and include 2 pack in game, even a second controller. For less that the Xbox One X with no pack in game, no second controller. $349.99 VS the Xbox one X price point of $500.00 USD. While E3 2018 could feature the first hint of the PlayStation 5. But for the moment Sony is crippled and in no shape to top Microsoft Xbox One X. The PlayStation 4 original/Slim/Pro family has reached just beyond 60 Million sold/shipped. Or a new company Apple or Samsung could enter/re-enter the console "war" and outdo the Xbox One X.

So I am not worried since it will happen eventually. If you want a future proof machine to play videogames on a $5000-$30,000 gaming PC with Over the top components, tailor made for gaming, built by you or for you. Even the hated over priced Alienware Gaming PC/laptops will beat the Xbox One X. Video gaming on Consoles and Videogaming on personal Computers are different parts of the Videogame Mulitverse. but not the same Universe.

So Yep it would be somewhat disheartening should right after the launch of the Xbox One X. Someone else announces that "We now have the worlds most powerful console ever created". The only thing I can be sure of is that it won't be Nintendo ever saying that.

I'd buy an X before a pro because I already own a ps4, but that said, I have a switch unopened sitting in a box next to me and after the love affair I had with my vita, I'm looking forward to being a full blown portable console gamer and maybe skip the upgraded tech all together. The frame rate/resolution stuff really doesn't bug me.

If I got a switch. not sure I would use it in handheld mode outside of Mario Kart. I've grown to fond of console gaming on 60" screen and not fighting controls, camera or viewing area of handhelds.

No offense to anyone but you should all get used to it, 2-3 years for a $600AUD Console is a absolute bargain... PC gamers have to pay $1000-1200 AUD for a new GPU every 8 months and you console gamers are complaining about a $600 complete gaming machine?

Sounds like nonsense you just made up. Source? And even if it's true it doesn't change the math in the slightest. Buy a console at launch and buy the next console at launch 3 years later = 3 years. Buy a console 1 year after its launch and the next console one year after its launch, too = 3 years.

Just because a new console might come out in 2/3 yrs doesn't mean you have to buy it right away.

Also, new consoles won't come out until 7nm process is ready.

It's a crazy situation, right? None of us have been in this situation before really. I suppose you could say the expansion pack for the N64 and the 32X for the MegaDrive were kind of similar in ways? It could be that in 2-3 years we see the next generational leap. It could be there will never be another generational jump. Who can tell?

I have very little interest in the Pro and 1X because I can already play those games. I haven't upgraded to a 4k monitor yet. The upgrade doesn't seem that crazy, but I have never really experienced a 4k screen so I can't really know whether that's significant. I'd rather upgrade my PC. So I don't feel like I'm the target audience at all.

I guess I would be a little worried about it because it's a lot of money. It takes a while for me to save up for it. And I really don't like selling my things second hand to other people. So yeah I would be a little worried that it would be a short lived purchase. But I expect that with the next PS and XB they will use the Pro and 1X as the low tier entry. I kind of expect the Pro and 1X to get ports of next gen games for a while.

I'm not nervous, I simply don't see the point in upgrading at this time. I'll wait for the next PlayStation iteration and upgrade at that point.

I upgraded to a Pro only because it allowed me to dispose of my OG PS4 and Wii U for a Switch, which took some convincing to do but I ultimately conceded. Had I not gotten that benefit, I would have kept my OG.
