I get it - it's a remaster. But this was a landmark game and the update not only looks great but is a reasonable price. I'm excited. Anyone else buying?

Nah. This Windows 10 bait won't sell with the bulk of the Age of Empires players on Steam or Voobly.
@PinchySkree: i strongly suspect it will come to steam soon. Their last attempts at forcing exclusivity to the store have been weak willed. The store blows chunks, as does the app (don't try to defend it guys. It's better than the old Windows store but it is sad on many levels), but not enough to put me off regardless.
@davillain-: AOE3 was super meh. But this is just AOE with improvements (supposedly), so it should be great... fingers crossed
I do have plains to buy AoE remaster down the road when it's on sale and despite everyone doesn't like Windows Store, it doesn't bother me if MS won't allowed it on other platforms and as long as the game itself isn't all screwy, they'll get my money, but not on launch day.
Nah, already own the collection on steam, and AoE 2/3 are the ones I go back and play regularly anyhow.
Same shit and another remake.
Also handicapped by windows store and probably windows 10, nobody will care for it even the slightest. It's doa on arrival.
They should have maked a all new age of empire with a half decent online function and throw it on gog/steam.
@Gatygun: they are making a new one too.
I think they will all wind up on Steam soon after their releases. MS is trying to push the store, but it only shines with their crossplay and playanywhere cases.
I watched the announced for this remake, i was sitting with 2 friends watching it and we where all bitching about how cool would it be if they actually made some interesting games like a new age of empire and boom a trailer starts running with age of empire. everybody was dead silenced and then the climax came and boom remake.
Eyes started to roll, and nobody talked about it ever again.
But yea i saw the announcement of 4, probably because the massive backslash the remake got for not being something fully new. RTS also seems to be on revival currently "they are billions is probably one of the best rts i played in the last decade"
I can't wait for 4 tho i hope it will blow me away. But i think it's going to take still 4-5 years for that stuff to move forwards, and frankly i'm not sure if it actually is going to happen and not get canned along the way. It's microsoft after all. Expect the worst and you will still be disappointing.
@davillain-: aoe 3 is nothing compared to the original
This is a day one purchase, this was the first game i ever got on my pentium 1, 233 mhz with its beast 16 mb ram
I may be in the minority here, but I actually prefer AOE 3 to 1 and 2.
Not really, Age of Empires III is still insanely popular to this day and being played online by loads of people.
Being the least popular of an insanely popular franchise isn't really a bad thing :P
And Age III isn't nearly as bad as some people make it out to be. Off the top of my head Age III has:

Yeah agreed! I don't even actually understand why it gets so much hate tbh. Like you mentioned, the graphical style and visual effects are a major step up, the gameplay is much more fluid and fast paced, each civilisation feels unique and there's way more unit diversity. Not to mention the home city cards mechanic added an even deeper level of strategy to the game. Gotta love kicking early modern European ass as old han army China! :D
Heck I'd compare it to the Command and Conquer series in fact, it's just as hard going back to Red Alert 1 + 2 after you've played Generals.
@mandzilla: for me, the issue was a couple if things. I didn't find the teams to be that interesting - they were distinct, but I wasn't very interested in the stuff that made then distinct. As for the new wizbangs and mechanics, for me they did nothing to enhance the experience. They added mechanical depth, but it felt like a bunch of noise that took away from the core gameplay.
Just my opinion. It was a fine game - probably still one of the better RTS games out there, but a step down the wrong path for me

i really liked the online game, with getting cards etc. It had some really hard modes in it. sadly they pulled it.
We already have 2, the superior game, in HD. So I don't care mcuh about the AOE HD game. I do however look forward to 4.
@ArchoNils2:to be fair, a lot of the QOL changes from AOE2 that made it great are now in AOE - for example, queing
@Gatygun: have you never played the original? I won't deny this still looks dated, but this is LEAGUES better than the original. You can see better details on the webpage I linked above - I'd hardly call it trivial; this is a much bigger improvement than AOE2 HD was

Honestly I didn't like Age 3 at first either ... Perhaps it was too much of a shift.
I know the new trading posts mechanic and home cities turned off people.
But the more I played Age 3 the more I started loving it.
I really like the subtle changes it does, and I really enjoy each civilization being entirely different, whereas in Age 1 or Age 2 they just had very similar civilizations... but with one unique unit per civ. (and a unique tech tree)
I wasn't big into the original AOE (I played II first, and went back to the first one for the different eras) and don't really want to buy it on the Windows Store.
I played some of the closed-alpha and it was decent, but the game hasn't aged well comparatively to others in its genre. It's great for nostalgia sakes, and being able to enjoy multiplayer is a good time.
RTS died almost 20 years. It’s a relic genre.
RTS may have lost popularity on PC thanks to DOTA, survival games and PUBG but it's far from dead.
After the time you say RTS died we've had:
And many, many other masterpieces.

haha.
hahahahaha!
BWAHAHAHAHAHA
Maybe on console, where it never really had a home in the first place.
It's alive and well on PC, though :D Lot's of RTS and other strategy games.

They are billions just released, probably the best rts in the last decade.
@xantufrog: Yeah it basically replaced age of empires for me, haha
I really like COH's way of getting in fights early, map control and squad management (+ veterancy)
On the other hand I also love Age of Empires resource gathering, base building and just building massive amounts of troops :P
I'll continue to play and love both series. But COH 2's multiplayer is some of the most fun and balanced multiplayer I've ever seen.
@R4gn4r0k: for me, I'm pretty happy playing one-on-one or all-vs-all games with AOE, but COH is a great game to play on teams. The benefits of cooperation are more tangible and it really feels more like you are divisions of the same army instead of big factions that are just not fighting each other for some reason
@xantufrog: Totally agree, man.
I can stand my own in a 1v1 in age of empires. But for COH 2 I just never really bothered with 1v1, map control is easier when you tackle it as a team.
Anyway, have you had a chance to play the Definitive edition ? How is it ? :)
@R4gn4r0k: I haven't tried it yet. My life's crazy these days. I'm probably going to buy it tonight and give it a go this weekend (if I can download it on my crap internet)
The original age of empires was like 500 Megabyte, lol
I doubt this one will be a very large download :P
I'd like to give AOE: DE a try, but I just can't. Besides Age of Empires online is scratching that itch for me at the moment, it's set in the same time period i.e. dawn of civilisations :)
@R4gn4r0k: I've heard it's huge because of the 4K textures and stuff, but I don't know. I'll find out soon!
In one of the videos that I saw they said that the original AOE used 8 directional sprites.
Now they've completely redone most of the sprites, used higher quality sprites and gave every sprite more directions.
The sprites they used for the Trireme for example already weigh more than the entire original game did, lol that's what they said in the video :P
@R4gn4r0k: ok, apparently it's 17 GB. That's ENORMOUS compared to the original game, but it's nothing these days, so I won't sweat it :-P
Yeah it's pretty relative, on one hand I'm surprised that it's SO MUCH.
On the other hand most games these days pass 50-60 GB.
