Always a step behind Dead or Alive in terms of graphics.

Always a step behind Tekken in terms of gameplay. Unlike Mortal Kombat it has no gimmick to speak of.

My biggest gripe with the game is really how weak the weapons feel. These guys wield swords and warhammers and it feels like they're hitting with Styrofoam sticks. No "ouch" factor. Play Samurai Showdown II or IV, a 2D fighter and be amazed at how suffering and pain is portrayed in the game. Every strike the characters take is felt and you can even watch them grit their teeth as a sword carves its way through their back. It's bloody. It's brutal. They have bladed weapons for Christ's sake. Soul Calibur? Doesn't even come close.

Soul Calibur? Yeah scrubby fighter for me. Not looking forward to the 6th entry even if it's coming out on PC. Plus no cross-play.

I haven't played the series, at all. Plan of judging it for myself than listening to Internet goons.

I'm not a fighting connoisseur, but I like it. Or, I liked 2 and 3 a lot back in the day. I don't really know or care to master the deepest mechanics of some of these games - they are too one-note for me to get too hardcore about. I'll get ok and have some fun bashing around with friends once in a while. That's my level of commitment

Soul Calibur is better than most fighters. At least it was from Dreamcast to PS2.

For once I agree with you,

sorry OP but other fighters are mediocre in comparison to Soul Calibur, in fact which game can you possibly compare Soul Calibur with? Street fighter? KOF, Skull girls, Blaze Blue, Giulty Gear, etc Tekken? Virtua fighter, Dead or Alive, etc, Soul Calibur is unique, and that makes it more interesting than any of the run of the mil fighters.

I prefer SF and Tekken these days, but SC is okay... granted I didn't play V. The first game was mind blowing when it was on Dreamcast (Yes, technically it's the first game of the series since it's a reboot from Soul Edge/Soul Blade).

@zaryia: Soul Caliber wont be nor will any fighting game with its pitiful community. But since you just linked popularity with quality we know you are clueless.

By your standard games like LoL and COD are the best games on earth.

SFV and Tekken community sizes are more than enough for PC, to the point were there is no issue finding games.

But most games are easily better on PC, that's just a fact.

Yes. Especially among the "hardcore" gamer crowd, you would be a minority in this case. That is unless you're simply misinformed, which most gamers are about many fg series. It's ok though.

Even when they have newcomer friendly things, like the quest mode in SC1 (which was really just a genius way to teach players how to play the game without explicitly saying it), they really aren't just for casuals. Zero casuals can actually comment on an even intermediate level analysis of high level play. Soul calibur is actually pretty deep, although some of the high level small details (speaking of SC2) are a bit frustrating in the grand scheme of things.

SC2 is probably my favorite fighting game ever.

With that said, the SC games after that one sucked. And they are up to SC6 now. So actually yeah, the series as a whole is mediocre, I must agree.

Love the looks and area desing.

Only moan is that in every game, you can beat opponents with repeating single fast attack. In single player anyways...

It certainly is. That's why I don't understand SC2 fans and their precious 'balance' talk. Like, who cares about balance in Soul Calibur. It's the type of game you pull out at the pre party so your friends who aren't good at games can mash buttons and do some cool flashy attacks. Sure, if you practice you can get footsie, timing and counter skills but that's it. My favorite is SC3 just because of the sheer unbalance and crazy shit you could pull off. Me and my friends had so much fun with that game. SC5 is when they dropped the ball and deleted moves and stances for several characters for the sake of e-sports. No wonder it flopped hard.

@X_CAPCOM_X: Ed Boon said it best when interviewed for EGM magazine when MK9 was coming out, he was asked if he would want to attract only the hardcore crowd or the casual crowd. His answer, you can't survive on the hardcore crowd.

While the best fighting games have deep mechanics and gameplay you need the casual crowd also or it just won't sell. Capcom found that out when they released a barebones SFV. Gameplay wise it was fantastic, but no arcade mode or story mode it couldn't draw in the casual crowd and it sold like crap. Its why fighters like MKX, which isn't as nearly as good gameplay wise outsold SFV by a LOT, and why Injustice 2 is such a big hit. Without the casual crowd the fighting game genre would be dead.

As a proud owner of original on Dreamcast, i think game is not overated but not as great as it used to be in the past. Its a good game when it was a one of a kind game with original, nothing more nothing less.

I prefer 2D fighters and im Tekken Veteran as my 3D choice though SC for Dreamcast will remain one of my best games along with Rival Schools 2 which was fun as hell back then.

Fighting games in general suck. Once you played any of them, you played them all.

There really isn’t much more innovation left for the genre.

Boxing, MMA and wrestling games were the next evolution but those games peaked to.

I really see nothing new happening until we can get plugged into the matrix and fight for real LOL

I haven't been into fighters much last few years, so can't say. Had fun with Soul Edge on PS1, but if I were going to get back in the scene, I feel Dead Or Alive would be the game.

Tekken is horrible, painfully slow and stagnant when it comes to gameplay.

I don't think soulcalibre is always the greatest but it's always better than Tekken.

Oh, it's definitely insane. But making inputs easier, or giving a (reasonable) auto-combo as DBZF does, doesn't make it a worse game, it improves it, people get an entry point if they just want to play with friends or whatever, and if they like, they can go on from there. A good tutorials helps as well, as the majority of fighting games until recently have had pretty terrible ones. Skullgirls and Killer Instinct probably have the best ones, as aside from giving combos it bothers to teach the player concepts.

-

Probably the biggest problem for newcomers, which has yet to be sorted is smurfs. A shit load of players deliberately make a new account specifically to harass new players. Which gives a negative, and wrong impression of the skill ceiling. SFV is absolutely rampant in this regard, shitting all over the accessibility.

@Juub1990: only deadliest warrior is that realistic and that is not the best fighting game by far.

I'm an avid mortal kombat player and I will give pro players a very hard time in some of the series, especially the fist and the ninth.

So to me mortal kombat is pretty much the best fighting game, that is if you don't count fight night champion as a fighting game, which is to me more of a sports sim. Not the likes of sf, sc and mk.

Yeah those are the three biggest names in fighting game land, street fighter, soul calibur and mortal kombat. Don't know what planet you're living on but those three pretty much make up the top of fighting games. Tekken was never the name those three were and are, dead or alive doesn't even come close.

For a very good reason, tekken has always had major competition from other 3d fighters , like dead or alive but especially virtua fighter which is arguably a better game when it comes to pro gameplay. There are tons of other 3d fighters that will compete with tekken as well, on all levels.

Soul calibur doesn't suffer from this since it has a very good single player campaign and the weapon based system makes it stand out as well. The first one, just like the other two big fighters (sf and mk) were a revelation when it comes to fighting games as well. Tekken did not have that to the same extent.

I played soulcalibur IV like crazy, I might pick this one up. Nightmare is my favourite character.

yeah nightmare can be difficult with his stances, but once you get him going, he can be a real nightmare lol.

I've been following that 6th iteration lately, I hope they really go down on the levelling of the armor of weapons, it's what made me fall in love with the series in the first place, and that was with soul calibur II.
