Why don't late night comedians tell jokes anymore?

Before going to sleep I used to watch Jay Leno or Conan and used to flip through the channels and watch other comedians that would tell actual jokes with a setup and punchline. Of course there were political jokes, but they were funny and mocked both sides and didn't try to push any agenda. When conservatives came on the hosts would give them a much harder time than liberals, but at least they would have a decent debate.

Now it seems like the late night "comedians" are nothing more than shills for the DNC and liberal activist. They regurgitate the same mindless talking points you see on MSNBC. Sometimes the "jokes" are things like "Trump is stupid". Democrats can do almost anything and some things that are ripe for mocking and it is never mocked on these shows. Why don't they mock both sides like Johnny Carson or Jay Leno used to do?

Is is that when Obama got elected people were afraid of being called racist is they mocked him? Now with Trump the liberal writers have so much hatred that they just want to dehumanize him and half the country?

I miss late night. Letterman especially. The crop they feed us now are just bad and you’re right, they’re just left leaning activists now.

Question. Do people who lean to the left find them funny?

Donald Trump is a punching bag that never loses it's shape. Nearly everything his administration does is incompetent, scandalous, and unpopular.

Perhaps if you didn't want him to be mocked, you shouldn't have voted him into office?

I gave the answer. I know your probably having a hard time reading it, what with being in a Siberian farm and all. So let me reiterate. Trump is making frequent headlines and is easily mocked. This is just salt because it's your guy getting the jokes and not something else.

@Vaasman: It doesn't look like you read my question. It looks like you just saw the word "Trump" and then moved to insult him. Can you reread any address the questions?

I'm not saying he shouldn't be mocked. As the president of course he should be, just like Obama should have been and every president before him was mocked. George W Bush was pretty heavily mocked and so was Bill Clinton. Trump's approval rating is above where Obama's was at this point in his presidency. Why aren't there an equal number of jokes about him as Obama?

The heart of my question is why late night changed from primarily being about trying to get people to laugh (including about the news of the day) to basically being propaganda for whatever the Democratic party is pushing. Wouldn't it be better if they told actual jokes with a setup or did skits or things that were funny to everyone in the country regardless of political affiliation vs. alienating half the country? Maybe they are just being lazy and think that some people are so filled with hatred that they can simply say "Trump is stupid" night after night and the left will still tune in? If they were just bashing Obama night after night I would have found it boring and turned it off.

@Maxpowers_32: I guess you're too young to remember the years of Clinton and Bush, that's fine. But late night has always been the same, you're just sour for the sake of it because you don't like that the topic of the topical humor isn't what you want.

@Maxpowers_32: Trump’s got the best material. I mean....watching that demented old asshole try to say “origins” but continuously spit out “oranges” over and over again while sitting there with a fake orange tan...wow...if there is a funnier joke than that, I’d love to hear it.

Nothing has changed, really. We're just in new territory for how bad and stupid our leadership is. Comedians dont have to stretch for a punchline much these days. Perhaps you're just honed in on how easily this content flows from them. Kakistocracy is like that.

@Maxpowers_32: yeah bud I quit watching it around the 2016 election, I would have thought after a few weeks they would have simmered down on the trump show thing, but they have been at it non stop lol.

I will admit this tho, because trump is so damn open about what hes thinking they do have alot to go after him for. The mans twitter rants for example lol

Personally I find Trump hillarious, hes made me laugh more than any other president.

Its hard to make jokes about the previous presidents, most are robotic drones for the most part, that just tell the people what they think they want to hear.

I do think hollywood is over playing thier trump hand, even if you hate Trump that shit gets borring.

Norm McDonald called it out for being lazy writing, its just too easy for them to pass up.

I stopped watching. It's all agendas now. It's funny for a bit but the same jokes get old. It also feels forced, like they are trying way to hard to make a joke funny.

@doomnukem3d: True she was pretty bad, but not tupee wearing gameshow-host bad. I think it’s more a testament to how gullible his voters were. This dude is such an incredible liar he said his favorite book was the Bible and then in the same interview couldn’t name a single verse in it. That shit is just straight up comedy. Or calling himself the “law and order” candidate right before his entire transition team is either under indictment or in federal prison? Hilarious!

I mean, the people that voted for him are the dumbest white trash imaginable, truly the bottom 30% of America in every way imaginable, god love em.

It brings in numbers, end of story. The left doesn't need actual jokes or punch lines, they just need a never ending barrage of attacks and they'll giggle and laugh at the most unfunny/unoriginal stuff.

I loved when SNL used to do skits on GWB, Clinton, etc, actual comedians doing actual jokes and skits. They were almost never malicious or just flat out attacked the person in general. Hell Adam Sandler made fun of Trump while reprising his role as Opera man the other week and it was funny as hell, sadly that's a rarity with political jokes anymore.

If that was the case AOC would have given them years of material. Has any late night talk show host even touched her video about how scary garbage disposals are, the ”farting cows” line from the Green New Deal, her fake southern accent, or her “I’m the boss” moment yet?

Yeah they're mostly painful to watch now. Trump is blablabla *everyone laughs*. I don't mind Conan. Odd that YouTube doesn't suggest more videos from him, but they do from Colbert and Kimmel. And I avoid them.

I enjoyed Colbert more on the The Colbert Report, right after The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. That was an entertaining hour of television.

They're really just pointing out the obvious. I'm sorry you can't see past ideology to realize how comically absurd the right is.

Did you even read my post? I'm not saying there aren't things on the right that comedians can't make fun of, but that there are plenty of things on the left that are completely ignored. Conservatives have a sense of humor and can laugh at themselves. What exactly does the left stand for now? I really can't keep track because it changes every 4 years.

Liberals call they disagree with "hate speech" and try to ban and/or destroy thoughts and people with whom they disagree. Did you see someone called 911 on a stand up comedian in Naples for making a joke? Why can't liberals stand to have anyone joke about them? Like I said Trump has higher approval than Obama at this point in his presidency and has accomplished a lot more, yet these "comedians" wouldn't say a single joke about him. My bigger point is that late night comedy should be comedy and not another platform for the same boring propaganda pushed by the DNC.

Why not use it as a time to unite the country by telling political jokes that make fun of both parties and telling actual jokes that everyone can relate to instead of just targeting the liberal extremist?

@Maxpowers_32: it's not really the job of comedians to unite the country. That's really supposed to be the president's job, if indeed it's anyone's job. Unfortunately our president's political bread and butter seems to be dividing people.

This post explains a lot.

Regardless, Republicans had sole control of every lever of government until a few months ago, and the current administration is still Republican (and a historically outrageous one at that). Both being in power and drawing attention to yourself on a regular basis invites satire.

Democrats have been the butt of jokes, the more high profile ones like Pelosi and Cortez particularly so. They'd be made fun of more often if the situations were reversed.

Yikes.

I mean his approval ratings are in the shitter as well, his first 2 years were the lowest in history for a President I believe. Are you going to get mad at most of America over this too?

I grew up during the days of Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Clinton, etc.., and believe me, there was a lot of material during those days. Comedians were comedians. Some didn't touch politics while others touched it in a way much different than today. Hearing that you mark out for those snl has-beens doesn't shock me in the least.

When conservatives came on the hosts would give them a much harder time than liberals, but at least they would have a decent debate.

I miss late night. Letterman especially. The crop they feed us now are just bad and you’re right, they’re just left leaning activists now.

Question. Do people who lean to the left find them funny?

Simple answer: The late night comedians are not comedians in any sense of the word.

I think they are hilarious. You guys all sound triggered over comedy. It's not the comedians fault that one side in particular is acting like the fools lately.

They risk losing their liberal audience and career.

More like conservatives are so comically absurd that the jokes write themselves.

They risk losing this guy. Very unhinged.

Yes, you sound very unhinged with these wild conspiracy theories.

The simpler answer is correct, the GOP is acting comically absurd and it's easy writing.

And then there is this, coming from the left.

Those are globally famous politicians?

I mean you're comparing random citizens with the President of the United States.....that's how much you are proving my point. You've really got nothing.

P.S. 3:23 = Hot. Brown girls are my fav.

ratings i suppose. don't know what to tell you.

if the ratings are shit, the shows will be cancelled / modified. it's still a business after all.

there seems to be an audience for their current content, therefore the shows provide it.

also, come the **** on. there's no way this isn't funny. regardless of your political affiliation.
