Should corporations earn their tax breaks?

So here's something that I saw recently. A group in the Senate tried (and failed) to include an ammendment to the upcoming tax bill that corporations would have to earn the tax break rather than it just be given to them no strings attached. One of the beliefs that democrats tend to have is that tax breaks don't spur much job growth and investment. Republicans (at least in congress) tend to believe the opposite.

This ammendment (which got Sherrod Brown and Orrin Hatch in a recent spat) to my understanding would require corporations to show evidence of job creation, investment, or better benefits to get the tax breaks proposed in the bill that's currently being worked on. Now it got voted down, but here's my question to republicans, would you be happy to see this get included in the tax bill? Why or why not?

Personally I think it's a great idea. It would help provide evidence as to whether or not tax breaks for the rich really helps the overall economy and it would provide incentive to actually create some jobs to get the breaks that would save them millions of dollars.

pART OF The problem is that many tax breaks are actually geared toward them losing jobs and minimizing the company.

Let's be honest, they know their arguments are fraudulent as much as we do. That's why those cuts are permanent off the bat and the others are temporary.

Yes but nothing is really permanent. We need a better majority party.

Well, it would be nice to have some incentive for corporations. Some states grant tax breaks to encourage certain industries to come to their state and it seems to work. I just want to prevent large US companies from shifting their HQ's overseas to avoid paying taxes. If they do that, then they should have to pay big tarriff's on their goods.

Even republicans know that tax cuts don't create jobs. Problem is that their donors are the rich and they're demanding them.

I'm cool with certain incentives and some write-offs like if you donate to charity, support green initiatives, convert to a system that saves resources...but there should always be a certain amount that you just have to pay. I mean this country should be generating trillions more dollars each year that we can reinvest in ourselves, and we are just not doing that.

That's all they need to do. Tax them anyhow. That's a game changer.

I don't care, give them tax cuts all they want. But first get rid if the socialist government program giving "patents" and IP protections, as well as gifts like regulations that essentially keep competition out of the free market. If they don't get rid of the patent system, the government is just scamming the people by giving away tax cuts...that's really the end of the story

Will you stop with the whining about the patent system. It isn't the cause of this problem and why should you get to mooch off someone else's work? That's a socialist ideology right there.

@LJS9502_basic: the patent system is the root cause of all the problems in society. And it's funded by tax payers who ultimately get screwed over so that a few can become fabulously rich by avoiding competition. It's enforced by the government by threat of violence...that alone tells you if something is socialist or not. In a real dog eat dog free market world with out government interference, or some other central power, there is no patent system. It is a children's concept meant to protect the rich from competition. That is the bottom line, and no amount of whining from you can change that.

The patent system is very necessary. However when you got companies which are basically patent trolls, then you need to re-work the current patent system.

China (the country with the largest economic boom in the last 40 years) might have a different argument to make.

We should get rid of tax breaks and incentives. It's gotten to the point where businesses are paying next to nothing while contributing very little to the state's economy.

@horgen: I strongly disagree. The very idea of patents to me is despicable. Crazy world we live in, where workers are expected to compete, but the companies/corporations get a free ride via government socialism.

Are you going to do this in every thread unrelated to patents?

Because they don't pay living wages and their products are cheap. Though they are losing that edge currently and their boom is not so fantastic anymore.

43% of our workforce is not paid a living wage. Over 50% make less than 24k a year after taxes and most of these people live in states where 8k+ is too much to qualify for social benefits like food stamps or medicaid.

Versus China, who in 30 years their middle class went from roughly 25% of the population to 61% of their population now being middle class, and their "boom" is just as good as its always been, its simply leveled out as everyone expected to happen. In 30 years they put more and a higher percentage of people in the middle class than America did in the 40s.... let alone trying to compare it to now with our dramatically dying middle class that shrinks yearly. These are not the dots you want to try to connect.... all i was pointing out was that its clearly not the economic vehicle some want to suggest, but for some reason you wanted to take it to this level where you're just flat out wrong about everything.

What exactly is your view of China? What do you picture in your mind when you think of how the average citizen lives? News flash, China has embraced American capitalism and even that they are doing better than we are.
