Al Gore’s goofy ass is about to be out of a job.

Go ahead and tell me again why it’s such a travesty that Trump pulled out of the bullshit Paris Accords deal.

http://www.newsweek.com/antarctica-melting-below-mantle-plume-almost-hot-yellowstone-supervolcano-705086?amp=1

Researchers at NASA have discovered a huge upwelling of hot rock under Marie Byrd Land, which lies between the Ross Ice Shelf and the Ross Sea, is creating vast lakes and rivers under the ice sheet. The presence of a huge mantle plume could explain why the region is so unstable today, and why it collapsed so quickly at the end of the last Ice Age, 11,000 years ago.

Mantle plumes are thought to be part of the plumbing systems that brings hot material up from Earth’s interior. Once it gets through the mantle, it spreads out under the crust, providing magma for volcanic eruptions. The area above a plume is known as a hotspot.

For 30 years, scientists have suggested that a mantle plume may exist under Marie Byrd Land. Its presence would explain the regional volcanic activity seen in the area, as well as a dome feature that exists there. However, there was no evidence to support this idea.

Now, scientists from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory have created advanced numerical models to show how much heat would need to exist beneath the ice to account for their observations—including the dome and the giant subsurface rivers and lakes we know are present on Antarctica’s bedrock. As lakes fill and drain, the ice thousands of feet above rises and falls, sometimes by as much as 20 feet.

Study author Hélène Seroussi, from JPL, said when she first heard that a mantle plume might be heating Marie Byrd Land she thought the idea was “crazy.”

"I didn't see how we could have that amount of heat and still have ice on top of it,” she said in a statement.

However, in a study published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, Seroussi and colleagues looked at one of the most well studied magma plumes on Earth—the Yellowstone hotspot. The team developed a mantle plume model to look at how much geothermal heat would be needed to explain what is seen at Marie Byrd Land. They then used the Ice Sheet System Model (ISSM), which shows the physics of ice sheets, to look at the natural sources of heating and heat transport.

This model enabled researchers to place “powerful constraint” on how much melt rate was allowable, meaning they could test out different scenarios of how much heat was being produced deep beneath the ice.

Their findings showed that generally, the energy being generated by the mantle plume is no more than 150 milliwatts per square meter—any more would result in too much melting. The heat generated under Yellowstone National Park, on average, is 200 milliwatts per square meter.

Scientists also found one area where the heat flow must be at least 150-180 milliwatts per square meter—but data suggests mantle heat at this location comes from a rift—a fracture in the Earth’s crust where heat can rise up.

Concluding, the team say the Marie Byrd Land mantle plume formed 50-110 million years ago—long before the land above was hidden by ice. Heat from it, they say, has an “important local impact” on the ice sheet—and understanding these processes will allow researchers to work out what will happen to it in the future.

What does this have to do with climate change and global warming...? That involves greenhouse gases being pumped into the atmosphere, not underground volcanoes.

Does any of this actually suggest climate change is false or not man made? There was a study put out two days ago that says humans are the main cause of climate change.

well, this only applies to a small part of Antarctica, and doesn't explain any other of the observed climate change that has been happening.

the Antarctica has actually been getting colder and increasiong ice pack in some places due to the polar vortex that has developed down there.

still an interesting article though thanks for posting.

This is why weather science is so fickle and not to be trusted. They can't make up their damn minds.

Interesting how you jumped to a conclusion which wasn't even mentioned in the article provided. I love this keyboard science provided by the right, it's not even attempting to provide even remotely connected events supported by evidence. It's point A to point B with out hesitation.

Yeah, no.

Making connections where there are none. If you actually do some research on the subject--instead of just accepting an eye-catching headline at face value like some sucker--you would see that one has nothing to do with the other. It is a shame so many act as puppets of mass media.

For starters, that "super volcano" has been doing this for a long, long, long time with little to no impact on the ice formations. Conversely, the fast melting of ice has only been going on for a very short time, and is a result of greenhouse gasses.

It's a very interesting piece of news and fascinating science, it is a damn shame these objective, well-researched facts are being distorted into subjective opinions.

Are you going to try telling everyone that there are also massive active volcanoes hidden beneath practically every glacier on the planet? Because according to your shit-for-brains thought processes that MUST be the only reason why glaciers are melting, even the ones that are nowhere near the poles.

Actually "us silly fucks" in academia have been screaming it for about 40 years now.... Back when people accepted scientific realities, then Al Gore made a video about it and stupid conservatives decided to turn it into a political opinion. We also decided to go with "climate change" because once again, extremely stupid people took "global warming" to mean it will never be cold.

Discovery, means newly placed.

It didnt exist before the scientists discovered it, god just put it there one day. So thats why we can dismiss every single piece of data and peer review on the subject.

You realize climate change has been more or less discovered, studied, and documented since 1985, yes? That people have been aware of greenhouse gases for even longer, as far back as the 1800's?

Much longer than Al Gore has been talking about it. All he did was make it a household issue, for better or worse.

But no, let's keep applying that good ol' right-wing logic of "It's quack science, so keep on putting crap in the air and earth"...God forbid we play it safe with our home, lives, and future and encourage study to find out if it true or not.

What I am telling you is that we just discovered it, have a few facts that imply it has little to do with the melting of ice caps, and either way it is too early to form an opinion.

It's not about dumb or smart, it's about common sense.

Also, WTF is with this logic: if a volcano is melting the ice, then...what? It's OK for us to help hasten the melting further by continuing in our ways?

Instead of spamming random 4chan pictures, can you tell me what is your differing viewpoint on climate change, and can you please provide recent peer reviewed studies which back it up? Can you provide recent peer reviewed studies disproving the Federal report from last week? Over 90% of climate publishing scientists and science organizations are wrong because of what exactly?

P.S. My views on NYT, WaPo, CNN, and Fox are based off of data from studies and fact checking organizations. But that is off-topic, and a deflection on your part. Please stay on topic.

Your goofy, over the top liberal bias has clearly clouded your already deluded brain. CNN was just caught the other day in another case of Trump Derangement with the bullshit fish feeding video in Japan which they then had to retract. What fucking mainstream news source has to constantly retract shit at the level that CNN consistently does?

Yet they’re “moderate” or even “right-leaning” in your eyes.

1. You lost the Climate change debate, and had to deflect to this red herring of Liberal Media. Derailing your own thread. This is sad.

2. You had no chance going up against the highly reputable, award winning, accurate, and renown WaPo or NYT, so you moved the goal post of your deflection to CNN which I've called bad since I started posting here. I merely state it isn't as bad as Fox. Because it isn't. FOX has double the false statements to answer your question. Studies show it is less biased. You will not find a quote of me calling CNN right leaning, please stop the fictional statements.

3. Stay you. 4chan memes vs Studies and data. No wonder Trump won the biggest uneducated vote gap in 30 years. Shits great indeed.

@zaryia:

1. Lost the debate how? If you think that a giant volcano beneath Antarctica isn’t a HUGE cause to the ice caps melting, then you’re a dildo. Plain and simple.

2. The NY Times flat out admitted to having an anti-Trump bias shorty after the election and issued a public apology...and then resorted right back to their usual bullshit. Facts, champ....learn ‘em, love ‘em, live ‘em.

3. And that’s exactly why Trump won (and will be re-elected at this pace, what the hell has the left even done to rebuild their party over the last year? Seems like they spend every waking moment of their time raging over Trump’s latest “tweet” instead) You liberals sure are “tolerant”, ya know, as long as people agree with you, that is...

The NASA study you posted in no way dismisses or undermines the conclusions of NASA. Or the Federal Climate Report released last week. Or 90% of other climate studies. The author of the paper doesn't even state as much. You're making up your own theory based off of that study.

This is called an opinion.

Directly contradicting much of the Trump administration’s position on climate change, 13 federal agencies unveiled an exhaustive scientific report on Friday that says humans are the dominant cause of the global temperature rise that has created the warmest period in the history of civilization.

You are objectively wrong on AGW.

Facts, champ....learn ‘em, love ‘em, live ‘em.

So you agree with AGW? You agree RW News sources are more biased, less trusted, and less accurate on average? Since you seem so keen on facts all of a sudden.

Wow, OP got absolutely rekt in this thread.

The Academia has been screaming about climate change for 40 years now. Al gore merely made climate change mainstream. And what needs to be noted is that CO2 emissions are what is greatly speeding up the rate climate change is occuring, no one but the biggest cranks say CO2 and human activity are the only causes. But I guess trying to justify one's opinion is a lot easier than actually learning what the scientists, are actually saying.

The fact is, your article did nothing to cast doubt on Climate Change. The research is still being consistant with CO2 being a major factor in climate change.

@mrbojangles25: So you’re telling me that a massive, active volcano under Antarctica hasn’t played a MAJOR impact on the melting of the ice caps?

Did you eat paint chips as a kid or are you being this dumb on purpose?

Are you going to try telling everyone that there are also massive active volcanoes hidden beneath practically every glacier on the planet? Because according to your shit-for-brains thought processes that MUST be the only reason why glaciers are melting, even the ones that are nowhere near the poles.

This is my thinking as well OP. Not going to dispute that an active volcano can largely affect ice caps. I don't know enough about this volcano research to form an opinion. But earth is a massive place. Are such volcanoes everywhere?

With the severity of smog seen in some places around the world, the overall rise in global temperatures, the severity of natural disasters and heatwaves, and the fact that millions of people die from pollution every year I cannot fathom how anyone can deny the harmful impact that we are having on our environment. It just boggles my mind.

Only way this thread makes sense is if OP has vested financial interests in continuing the use of greenhouse gases and is pulling our leg. Otherwise, it is pure crazy town.

The climate denier crowd doesn't even believe the stuff they spout they just want to fool gullible rubes and intellectual midgets like the OP here. Congrats OP, on being conned by the same groups who tried years ago to convince people that tobacco smoke doesn't kill! They've hooked you quite well.

To be fair, most people struggle reading and comprehending scientific papers. Hell did you hear about the 400 papers that "challenge" the consensus of climate change? That were running rampant in the right wing clogosphere. Even though a good chunk of them werent even from reputable journals, and a good chunk of them had nothing to do with climate change (sounds familiar) and others even outright supported climate change, but the blogger's scientific vocabulary made him totally misinterpret the articles.
