Thoughts on refurbished ps3?

I'm think about buying 40 gb ps3 for around 200 usd and upgrading the harddrive to 320 and get addition warranty. But would buying a refurbished ps3 be a thing?

Not a very good idea. From what I've heard, anytime you buy any electronics that was refurbished, you run the risk of having major problems with it. Buy new.

Yep, you're right. This is specially true if you are getting it from Gamestop.

If its factory refurbished than I would think the risk is the same with brand new. Sony sent me a refurbished 60gb model and its been running smooth for almost a year. On the other hand, I just purchased an Asus g71gx-rx05 refurbished laptop and after a week the screen failedon me and the laptop freezes from time to time.

when my first 40 gb ps3 got ylod (after 14 - 15 months of heavy use) i was given a refurbished one from the warranty, that lasted for only 8 months and it got ylod as well last september (2009) in my country the warranty is for 24 months so i got it replaced again, but i have given the refurbished one to my brother who almost never plays console games, so he has a free blu-ray / dvd player, i bought myself a 120 gb slim, with which i am quite happy so far... from experience i can tell you to stay away from refurbished ps3s... :)

I always buy new consoles, I would not risk getting a system that will break down on your sooner than later.

If you where getting it for around 100bucks...yeah,I would say good deal, but for 200.00...why not just save up another hundred and get a new system with a lager HDD "AND" awarranty??? You take a chance with new and old electronics "BUT" it's more of a crap-shoot with the old....

Don't do it. The 40 gigs were known for problems when they were new, so going refurb on one of those is like buying a used tire for your car. It was new then it blew out but we retreaded it and it may last a little but if it does blow out again, bigger problem.

hmm ok yea I been hearing about the 40gigs. I have a refurbished surround from sony thats been working for 1.7 years but damn if the 40 gb was known for giving problems I might have to scrap that idea. hmm might as well get the slim and put a decal on it. I think they are kind ugly but hopefully it helps with the ylod and dre prevention.

The slim is awesome. I have the 120 gig and actually I prefer the look and finish of the slim over the bulky fingerprint prone old systems. I have 2 children and greasy kid fingerprints are hard to get off lol. But seriously its all preference and opinion when it comes to that. Get the slim though you won't be dissapointed.

Buy New. I bought a refurbished old 60GB model some time ago and it broke in the first two or three months. I don't know how reliable the new slim line models are when refurbed.

A 40 gig no way would I get it used or refurbished. A 20 or 60 gig then I would jump on it in a heart beat if I needed one. I have a 60 gig thats still going strong after over three years of hard use. I never turn the thing off unless I need to service it like a couple of months ago.

second hand and refurbished generally mean we can get it to turn on it must work lets sell it. As the customer you try use it and it goes bang

I owned a PS3, sold it and bought a refurbished one months later. That was March 09 and we're now in August-September 2010. I can say i've had no problems with my refurbished PS3, runs just as smoothly as my original PS3. It's really up to you, I guess i've been lucky so far. *knocks on wood*
