I put it horizontal. I'm afraid vertically, my mom will accidentally knock it off and my 300 dollars will go down the drain.

tall looks cooler but risky unless u have a stand to boost strenght and stablized. flat is normal and safer.

i used to do tall it save room but now somehow i did flat. might reorganize stuff and do tall again. its way inside shelf of tv no one will knock it off.

Horizontal because it can't fall over and it looks better like that where I have it.

Horizontal because vertical is pointless. Sony started is strange craze when the PS2 was released and all the PR shots were with the system in a vertical position... seriously, what is the point. It makes it harder to load discs and the whole thing can fall over. Some say it means the system takes up less space, but since you are meant to give these things lots of room (like 1ft) , you can't anyway.

I have my system vertical. I have had it standing this way for well over two years now with no problems and it's on 24/7.

I can only speak for my PS3 Slim -

It's runs cooler standing up.

A lot cooler.

IDK exactly why maybe it's because

45% or so more exterior surface exposed to air,

or the way heat rises inside the case.

Nevertheless it's a Stone Cold Fact that my Console runs Much Cooler Vertical.

it's your thing, do what you want to do.

I don't think it really matters. But you all do have a point. Vertically takes up less space so does the heat. But than again it is easier to knock over vertically. hmm..... Maybe someone should just ask sony.

Well, all I know is that I put my Wii horizontaly so the discs are just resting, and are not constantly being pulled down. Plus it just seems to work better for me.

Ther's a vent on both sides, I believe, so vertically would be stupid. Horizontal is th way to go.

I think you should put it Horizontally because it's less likely that it will fall and $300 dollars is down the drain

it doesn't matter. put it the way you prefer. if one way would make the console more "damage prone" sony wouldn't give you the option.

If its behind closed locked doors then vert if not horz when your not around then vert when your playing. I like it vert because the vents are facing up in the air so there's never a worry about it over heating.

it has nothing to do, the PS3 has fans on the back and its left side...they are "strategically" placed so that there is no difference between horizontal and vertical placing

I have kept 4 PS3s vertical for years and I've not had any probs at all with them. Vertical allows you to put a beautiful custom theme from www.uniqueskins.com on it.

It doesn't matter at which position you have it - horizontal or vertical. It's a personal preference.

The PS3 is build to either stand-up or lay down.

Keep it in well ventilated location and you don't have to worry.

its hard? its not hard at all, as a matter of fact, you dont even need to apply pressure...that thing activates with a hair...its a touch pad, putting a nail on it will activate it.

I did experiments on this recently. Having it vertically caused the bottom portion to be cooler after 2 hours endurance race in GT5. My theory is that the bottom part touches the surface of the table it's on, heating the table up. The table retains some heat, but also gives some back to the plast of the ps3. This in turn results in a hotter bottom surface.

Unfortunately, I couldn't learn how the actual internal components are affected (vertically or horizontally). All I do know, is when I put it vertical, my BLU-Ray drive makes weird noises, comparet to relatively silent in the horizontal position.

So....i'm keeping it horizontal now, but I don't like how the bottom part gets hot. I laptop cooling pad would probably be the best bet (as long as it's completely horizontal)

I have confirmed this to work.... I was getting green pixels everywhere vertically, a sign of overheating video card, to the point that it would freeze and shut off.... putting it horizontally keeps more pressure on the heatsink and card... but! .... I now elevate it off the table with a small stand, about 3" off the table... the problem fixed itself, never had another issue

HAHA, funny thing, I had my PS3 set up vertically for about a year but soon my sister decided she'd be cleaning both hers and my room each week or so and I set it up on the table by the TV diagonally. Somehow, while VACCUMING (THE FLOOR), she managed to not only get it off the table (which stands about four feet off the ground), but the PS3 did like three flips before finally stopping in the middle of my room. I didn't really react to it...and the console still works perfectly.
