Ok so just now I was playing my *literally* brand-new PS3 with my dad, our 80gb, playing MotorStorm, and after I shut off the system and reached back to hit the main power button, I almost crapped my pants as the how hot it was, we played for *literally* less that an hour, and now I'm really scared that something is wrong already, is this natural? Also, I heard it will shut itself off if it gets too hot, but when will it get to the point that it is ruined?

PLEASE HELP ME!!!

as far as I am aware, that is perfectly natural; there are cooling systems that you can get for it, but they generally have a high risk that goes along with them (I've heard of cases during and after installation where the ps3 stopped working)

That doesent sound good. I have a 60GB and at times i play it for 4-5 hours, and it barely even gets warm, pretty much just room temperature. Make sure it has a lot of air and space to ciculate

That's good bro, it blows out the hot air so obviously the vented areas are going to be warmed up themselves. I've had my ps3 on at least 10 hours a day since July 23rd and mine smiles at me every morning :D

If the back is hot it probably means that the inside isn't. The cooling system is doing it's job.

If the console overheats, the power light will flash red/green repeatedly. Don't worry about it unless that happens.

make sure ur ps3 has enough room to breathe, cuz if its too close to a wall or wtv, there might not be enough air for it to ventilate, so basically it's taking back the hot air it just blew out. if it generates too much heat, then get a cooler for like 30$ or something like that. hope your ps3 is okay

As others have said, the fan is doing its job and pushing the hot air out the vents in the back. Completely normal. Imagine if that fan and vents weren't there.:?Kaboom!

LOL at the person who said it will blow up. But seriously, I don't know why that's happening. Try setting your PS3 in a well ventilated space away from walls. It give it much more room to breathe. I have a 40GB and I left it on during the night and it didn't even get warm.

Cooling systems apparently brick systems for some... Don't waste your money you don't need it bro. Plus don't bump a page in less than a minute of your last post on it 0.o

PROS: It helps with the cooling process

CONS: Hard to install (some actually require dismantalling the ps3)

High risk of breaking the PS3 (even after installation)

I personally don't think it is worth the risk or trouble

Make sure you don't have anything around your ps3 so the air can circulate.

No we're not, but I am now. Try moving your PS3 position to a place where there is atleast 5-10cm breathing space for your PS3. Your problems should be fixed. =)

Sometimes mine does that after a short time, and sometimes it's a normal temp after running all day. Don't worry yet, keep it ventelated.

On Topic: Well ive had my PS3 on for about 11 hours at times (during parties) and It usually stays reletively cool, it may just be a one time thing with your console. But in saying that, if the problem persists I would contact Sony and get some help

Hope that helped

Lets just put it this way, if it wasn't normal, then your PS3 would be turning itself off. The interior is obviously not overheating if it's not shutting down, so don't be so worried. Do not buy some type of Intercooler, they're terrible.

I find it weird that you guys are saying it gets really hot. I left mine running for 24 hours yesterday, actually i was downloading the gt5p online update, and forgot to turn it off :P . It still is around room temperature. Ya know, it's kinda proven that if the PS3 sits horizontally... it generates much less heat and you guys should really leave your ps3 in the open, not in cabinets, or shelves or watever. Because seriously, mine never got hotter than the notebook i'm currently using. :)

Well I felt the same way about the heat when I first got my ps3, so I bought the pelican cooler. I must say it helps alot, the fans help pull warm air out, not force air in. Heat will eventually destroy any electronic device. I don't buy that crap about it being bad for your ps3, I've never heard of any ps3 that was bricked by an add on cooler, that's just an xbox thing.

*clicks* Of course! Just got the idea when aaron said 'horizontal'.

Stand your PS3 vertically. Horizontally generates more heat because your PS3 will cover more ground thus heating up against the material you are lying it down on. Ok cool, I fixed things. Now let's partay!!

You have to keep your PS3 in a well ventalated area if the TV cabinet area it is in is to small you should take it out and put it next to your TV cabinet thus allowing for alot more breathing room. before in the past i had my console in a small area using different cooling fans my console would still get hot and freeze but since taking it out and not using cooling stuff and keeping it in a area where it has loads of breathing room it works better than before. So i recon take it out and put it on a small table on the side thats your best bet.

Yeah, place it on a small table, but make sure it's sturdy so it doesn't fall over. Then no more PS3 =( I'd be doomed without it.

believe it or not that is normal. I can cook my eggs on the thing. But there is nothing to be worried about just make sure you put it in an open space so it can breath and there should be no problems.

Dude, my PS3 acts as a personal heater in the winter. This thing literally makes a room hot. Don't sweat it. It's a tank. It'll just heat the place up.

ok last question: its also by my fireplace, does that matter if the PS3 is off and the fireplace is on? is there any hazards awaiting if i put it near my fireplace?
