Last night, I had to mourn the loss of my 60gb, due to YLOD. I treated my PS3 like gold, kept it clean, as dust-free as possible, etc. After looking up vids for quick fixes for YLOD on Youtube, I read many comments all stating the same thing..."After I updated 3.0, 2 days later I get YLOD!" After seeing this on many YLOD fix videos among their comments, I start to wonder if its all just a coincidence, but A LOT of people seem to have this problem several days after updating 3.0. Is Sony going to acknowledge to seemingly growing problem among the older model SKUs? I also read that people call Sony and Sony claims its just a coincidence. I don't know what to believe, but anyone else get YLOD shortly after 3.0? A few of my friends have 60gb SKUs too, and I just wonder if they'll be next, and if it does happen, something is definitely wrong...

My 60gb got the YLOD back in June actually. I just think the 60s are finally showing some age and showing the fact that all electronics can fail over time. It probably has to do a lot with the fact they use so much power and generate more heat than the newer systems. I dont believe it has anything to do with 3.0 though. its just one of those crappy things that seems to be happening lately. I dont even know if Ill try to get mine fixed since I havent had the money to so far and when i do get some extra money in Nov I plan on just buying a Slim.

Well, I hope it doesn't become a problem for any PS3 owner. I figure the people that look up YLOD fixes are within a small % for PS3 owners that had it happen to them. Sadly, I'm part of that small % :( I figure now is a good time as any to get a Slim. I just don't trust refurbs, lol

Mine was working perfectly, til last night my friend was playing CoD4 online, then it just shutdown and the YLOD appeared.

They want you to buy a slim so they're infecting playstations with a virus in 3.0 to kill all previous models, it's a conspiracy!

3.0 shouldn't have any impact on PS3's getting YLOD. YLOD is caused by hardware failure.

True, but if all the new sparkly effects and friends list use extra processing power, they could heat it more, which could push it over the edge to failure.

Very doubtful. The sparkles on the new 3.0 doesn't take any more power to make than adding on a friend or starting up a game. As T-Machine99 said, 3.0 software shouldn't have any effect on a hardware failure. My 60GB runs just fine with 3.0.

I think its probably just a coincidence although my PS3 got a second YLOD on the weekend, it was repaired from its first YLOD only 5 weeks ago.

I heard that if you download the American update for a different region PS3, there could be problems. I'm not sure if this applies to direct PS3 downloads or whether this is true or not.

I don't think the firmware has anything to do with a failure. I haven't had a problem with my 60 gig and it's been used every day since the update was released. I installed the update within the first hour it was out.

I"m sure it has nothing to do with 3.0, i too took good care of my system but still got the YLoD. Got a refurbished 60GB last November and had no problems with it so far.

True, true...But I already dismantled it to get CoD4 out of the blu-ray drive. I paid $60 for it, and Gamestop's offer is $60 for broken PS3s towards the Slim. I would rather keep the game than get $60 and lose a game completely. But thats me :) I am gonna miss my 60gb, but it wasn't gonna last forever, thats life, lol.

I still haven't updated to 3.0. I don't think I will either until they fix the bugs.

I don't believe half the people who claim to the get the 'YLOD' ..

It's a coincidence, or not even happening ..

My 60GB is still running like perfectly, and I have yet to vacuum to clean the vents once .. only wipe it off every so often ..

Some people don't have A/C and it's hot out there ..

Why, why is it always a new firmware is released people begin complaining about it screwing up their PS3s, mine is a pretty old 40GB, and has survived so far.

But, now Im scared, mommy hold me :(

just a quick ? does anyone know if you send your ps3 in for ylod. do you get the same ps3 you send them back ?? because if it would ever happen to me i would only want mine repaired not replaced i would have to redownload eveything on the different ps3 instead of just using a backup ext hdd the backup only works on the same ps3 that would suck redownloading all my music, movies and games (about 150 gbs worth)!!!

I've noticed mine takes a hair longer to load a song whenever i choose it. anyone else notice this issue? i love my baby too much!

question: if i ever get the yellow light of death, i have to take the harddrive ive put in mine out and put the original 40 gig back in it before shipping it to sony. do you think that my data on the 250 i'd be taking out of it would be fine if i were to put the harddrive in an enclosure after removing it from my ps3? ALL of my music is on this thing, and no where else, so you can see why im a tad preoccupied

KamuiFei your not alone man. I just downloaded the ps3 3.0 system update the day it was released. 2-3 days later, I on my ps3, 2 minutes later the YLOD! I felt a tear drop. The worst part is I just got the Batman game, fml. lol I really do think its the update but thats just me.

Guys, is it worth 160 to send back or should I go crazy and follow those youtube vids on and try to repair it on my own?

you get a replacement, also either way you would have to redownload, because the fix is to format the harddrive.

Hmmm I was wondering, does Sony go through your hard drive to see what you have on it? I have a lot of pics/videos on it. Also my friends took a flash drive and imported videos from it on to the ps3, some which might have been illegal. This is why I'm scared if i send it back in i might get fined =(

you might as well take out the hd and see if you can grab things off of it with an enclosure. not sure how possible that is though...

CanadianCR?

And yeah I'm worried about this, really worried. I've had my 60GB for almost 3 years and it hasn't had a problem. If it were to break shortly after installing FW 3.0 to it, then I'd have to believe that may have had something to do with it.

People are trying to claim the update is causing the infamous YLOD .. which is impossible ..

I understand that sometimes a fireware update might cause some problems within the logistics of the system, but doesn't cause it to overheat ..
