Seriously let's think about it there isn't many games out there with a African American as the main character. I can only think of two at the moment GTA San Adreas and Borderlands (Roland). Please list others if you know.

I know Lambert in the SC series is a huge main character.
Or do you mean playable?
supa_badman
ya playable
I don't see how it should matter... the only one in recent memory would be CJ, though.
Scianix-Black
Well me being black, I would like to play as a Black person sometimes. If your white you wouldn't understand

Well, me being part of an even smaller minority than African Americans, I can't see how the color of the character's skin would make much difference.

can we get back to the oringnal question?
Does it really matter what colour the main character is?
MushroomWig
Only to those that wouldn't mind playing as a black character every once in a while. Just a change of pace. That's all.
[QUOTE="SemiMaster"]We're counting women?! jk. My bad... apologies ;)How the hell can you forget Sheva Alomar from Resident Evil 5?
I mean she IS African, literally.

[QUOTE="MushroomWig"]Nathan Hale isn't Black. =/emitsu97No question. Your online avatar can be though. So true!

Um... Alex Mason and Nathan Hale are both white dudes. And Fallout 3 or Oblivion shouldn't really count because they are customized characters. I think it would be more meaningful to the TC or anyone else who is interested in playing as a black character if the character was exclusively black and had a fleshed out personality all his own.

As for Resistance, the co-op avater is black. I don't see why games with customizable main characters don't count. TC even mentions SOCOM.

Exactly what I was thinking. As far as I'm concerned, anything that doesn't exclusively have a black guy doesn't count, so really it's just GTA San Andreas, Borderlands and Crackdown so far.
Jade from Beyond Good and Evil. You can't tell me she's not at least half black.
SemiMaster
I think there's a better chance of her being hispanic or south eastern asian.
Oh yes... how could we forget.
Michael Jackson in Moonwalker
Shaquille O'Neal in Shaq Fu
Michael Jordan in any number of his games
Any number of the Fighters in the Def Jam series
50 Cent from Bulletproof and Blood on the Sand
Blade from the Blade Games
Niobe from Enter the Matrix
Nathan "Rad" Spencer in the Bionic Commando sure looks black to me with his Dreads and dark tan color skin.
(I think we debunked this whole no Black Main Characters thing...)
You found one of those lists on google didn't you? :lol:Oh yes... how could we forget.

It's interesting that even when they're going for a Black female character, they make her look caucasian to be more palatable. On that note... Moonwalker. No but for real: Killer7, Eternal Darkness, and Indigo Prophecy. How the hell can you forget Sheva Alomar from Resident Evil 5?

*smack*... I just got that one.I know where you're coming from. But I would rather have a black lead that isn't a stereotype.
Unfortunately, caucasians are the most marketable because of our past and current societies.
Hell, I would like to see any race get more serious lead roles that aren't stereotypes.

1) They can, but not all of them do. And even when they have light skin, they don't usually have caucasian-like faces. Look at Jade's nose. It looks like Lara Croft's. She may as well just be a white lady with a tan. Black people don't look like white people with a tan. They're calling their characters black but keeping facial features that are caucasian because that's apparently what's deemed more classically attractive.
3) I needed it for the joke. Tough!

pick up any NBA liscensed game and take your pick of any of the 10 playable black characters at once lol.
tiger woods
more than half the fighters in fight night round 4
pretty much the whole roster in any def jam game
jax n quite a few others from the mk universe
balrog and dee jay from sf dudley looks to be of color as well
zasalamal (sp?) from soul calibur

I totally agree. This is pretty much why I said customizeable characters shouldn't count. Customizeable characters are only characters by appearance and are usually mutes with no personality whatsoever. In order for this black main character to be black they need more than dark skin. They also need a black personality. This is why I think a lot of devs pass on black characters. They don't know how to make a black character without all the bogus stereotypes.[QUOTE="SemiMaster"] 1.) Black women can have lighter skin tones. 2.) I suppose, but you could say the same thing about Japanese games having vaguely Asian characters but still looking like caucasians too.

Dude, why does it matter what skin color he has? He isn't going to play any different lol. Its an undeniable issue for some people. If you don't understand why it matters then you obviously have plenty of characters in your video game collection to relate yourself to. I'm native american and it honestly makes a difference to me what colors my heroes are. Not because I'm racist but because I like to be able to relate to them better. Its just nice when you're playing a game, reading a book, or watching a movie and be able to say "Hey, that guys kind of like me!" Now, I've always been able to relate to certain characters for their personalities, but skin color is just an obvious way to do it. Its especially important for kids to have role models and heroes that they can identify with. I don't care who you are or what color you are, more often than not your favorite heroes are going to either closely resemble who you are or who you want to be.[QUOTE="Denji"]I totally agree.
