Best comment I've seen in my entire life. I just hate antiviruses useless as shit!

Tried AVG, sucks, Avira, sucks, Avast, sucks, Kaspersky, sucks.

I've given up on antiviruses for now and haven't used it for years . Had no problems so far . I rather re-install Windows .

out of sight, out of mind, right? you don't see any malware leeching your PC if there's no software that can notify you about them.

why have you "given up" on antiviruses? you don't have to do shit, since they are fully automatic. i don't fucking get it... just plain crazy to not have one running.

Webroot. It's awesome. It uses minimum computing resources and it scans really fast. When it suspects a virus/malware, it will pop-up saying you wanna delete it? I click yes and it only takes a few seconds and automatically scans the computer.

I can play video games, do anything that is resource exhausting and webroot will not make it any slower (even when it's scanning). Also, it knows LOTS of viruses/malware. Every time I download something and it contains something bad, webroot will pop up and delete the bad stuff in there right awway and yet I can still install whatever I just downloaded without a problem. That's how awesome this antivirus program is.

Common sense is the best antivirus. If you don't pirate games nor go to sketchy sites, then you shouldn't ever need an antivirus...

If you don't have anti-virus software, how do you know that you don't have any viruses or malware?

Because I can still run scans... I just don't keep anything constantly running.

Not always. Even legit sites sometimes get malware through them.

Isn't it smarter to stop something getting in, instead of letting it in and then running a scan after it has "potentially" done it's damage?

Windows defender is what I use. I'd only pay for an anti virus that detects adware like babylon. If you accidentally forget to unclick babylon in an installer, all hell breaks loose.

I uploaded babylon to virustotal,

https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/599995591da3dcdfff56d6451c39a95b6f1d610b870d7c6bd678ee39f266fa2c/analysis/

So if I had to pick, I'd choose Avast, however when I last used Avast it was such a pita to add exceptions.

On my two PCs that are for gaming I dont have an antivirus installed. I use AVG on my other PC but I think ill give Avast a try next time after reading some comments here. Usually, if i think I have a virus on either of my gaming PCs Ill just reformat, it doesnt take that long.

Windows Defender, or whatever is built into Windows 8. Been nearly two years since I installed Windows 8, never installing any anti-virus software, and I still haven't had any issues.

But like I said to another poster, isn't it safer to STOP something before it comes in instead of letting it in, let it do "potential" damage and then run a scan?

It's not like AV software these days use a lot of RAM and CPU power.

MSE, malwarebytes, and my brain

This, although version MB 2.xx seems to mess up my internet for some reason.

I've scanned for hijackers with various other tools, so I'm pretty sure it's just a bug, although it does induce a bit of paranoia in me.

I still have AVG on my comp. No issues so far. Might change to Avast sometime in the future, due to people praising it, but whatever. I don't really care.

Wat?

So Antiviruses stop absolutely nothing?

Mmm kay. All those messages I get on Avast and also at work with our corporate AV about threats stopped must be random things done by the program to make me feel good.... right.

Avast. I heard NOD32 is the best, but I can't be bothered paying for it. My friend has a "less than legal" version, but I hate wearing eye patches and peg legs, so I've become a freeware addict. I used Avast since Version 4.x and had no problems.

They mostly block random harmless cookies, classify them as "Threats", and you're automatically convinced you're getting your moneys worth because you don't know much about what's going on. Every once in awhile they'll catch minor malware that is ultimately harmless but could also be picked up by free scans like Malwarebytes. I know this because I see friends having to fiddle with their anti-viruses, constantly. The pop-ups that appear when they catch something are always just trivial cookies.

I'm curious, what sites do you frequent that contain this malware? I'll do a scan with Malwarebytes once every two months and it's rare I pick up anything worth noting. If normal sites contained malware often enough worth noting, wouldn't it be more necessary to use an anti-virus? I can't remember the last time I was inconvenienced by any sort of virus. Nor has anything of importance been hacked (in a way that I could contribute to a virus, at least). Any new nasty viruses being spread usually aren't stopped by commercial anti-viruses, you often need to go through complicated removal procedures.

I get my money's worth cause I use Avast Free Edition. I just don't get why people have so much issues with such a simple program. I understand maybe 15 years ago where computers were slower and there wasn't that much RAM to run an active AV, but now the norm is 8GB RAM (I have 32GB for example), my Avast right now is using 10MB of that 32GB, it's not really slowing my machine down.

I guess no one locks their front door either at night....

Exactly this, I have been using Nod 32 for years, it really is the best AV.

IF you catch sales and keep your eyes open you can nab it for really cheap. For instance I got it completely free for 3 computers from Newegg by keeping my eyes open with Instant rebates, and mail in rebates.
