680/7970 is roughly equal to 6950 CF, so you're going to be seeing a decent improvement. You'll also have more VRAM, lower power consumption/heat and best of all no CF issues.
the 7970 is faster, the 680 is better power consumption, so take your pick. Â Id get the 7970 if I could find a deal on that.

Do you find it impossible to pass through a thread without mentioning how good the 7970 is? $380 for a 680 is a steal, go for it.

why spend more $$ on a weaker card? Â I admit it has better power consumption and for that reason Id consider it. Â Also at $380 it is right in line with most 7970 prices so its actually pretty competitive. Â As I said, take your pick better performance or better power consumption. Â Its a tough choice for me as well, Id probably have a hard time deciding on this.

Ha, yeah, I have a hard time believing that. Before your 7970, your 6950 was the best damn thing in the world. There's not enough in it to say one is better than the other (680 vs 7970), some games will favour the 680 and some will favour the 7970. In fact, if you look at HardOCP's driver progression reviews for both AMD and nVidia, you see that for all of the games, the 680 (310.70) has higher fps than the 7970 (12.11), despite the fact that the AMD rig was using a 3770K and the nVidia rig a 2600K. I realise this may be hard for you to take in, but just try to hold yourself together.
so you're comparing an overclocked 680 to a severely underclocked 7970 there. Â Everyone knows the 7970 overclocks higher than a 680, and clocking a 7970 at the 680's clock will put it well ahead. Â Toms hardware puts the 7970 ahead in ranking, and until that changes the 7970 will be the king. Â Also before you trash my record, I actually owned a sonic palit 460 gtx before the 6950 2gb. Â It was an awesome card and in fact I would have stuck with it if i knew the performance increase going to the 6950 was not as much as expected. Â I also have a geforce 240 in my backup computer and a geforce 640 2gb sitting in my room waiting to replace my 240 gt. Â I may prefer AMD for gpus, but I will not let that interfere with my choice in picking the best video card for my $$.

He can't post without mentioning the love of his life - 7970. I'd pick a 680 just for the better control panel personally. And form my experience i've had no issues with nvidia cards (I've been 'close to' 4 - My 275, my dad's 9800, my cousin's 8800GTX, a good friend's 560ti), but 2/4 AMD cards I've been close to have had problems (a 4890 and a 5570, both with driver issues; a 4870 that was fine and a 9800 pro, but that's so old I'm not sure it counts)

technically speaking a 7970 ghz is also a "reference" card. Â So maybe comparing a regular 7970 to a "regular" 680 (one that autoboosts) isn't fair?

thats nice and I haven't had any serious issues with my ATI cards over the 5 generations ive had them, neither have my friends, or my dad, or my uncle, or my cousins. Â Some small issues like glitches in older games dating back to dx9 should be fixed but thats about it.
I went from 6870 crossfire to gtx 670. And I don't regret a thing. Every thing works now, no more pulling out my hair with microsuttering and waiteing for driver updates so i can use both cards

I'm pondering the same thing. I was gonna wait it out and see if the 8xxx series cards were gonna release, and what their performance was like, but it looks like they aren't hitting the market anytime soon. So it was between 670, 680, or 7970. I'm in need of some mo VRAM. :)
