Should own and why?; now thats a very challenging question.
Id like to choose a favourite, but that leaves out the why, so instead I'll say any game that has a nostalgic to it is a good game to the individual, Doom3, I dont particularly like the game, but the emersion is very good, I prefer rts truth told, but a first person rpg can draw you in more, doom 3 does a great job.
Number one would be COD 4 and tied is HL 2. There are other great games though. Thief, Medal of Honor, Splinter Cell, Quake, Unreal, Crysis, Bioshock, Soldier of Fortune, Duke Nukum, Doom, Max Payne, and Deus Ex. Gunman and Renegade were also entertaining. Did I miss some?
I'm gonna have to say Mafia like a few other lads here.  The game has good graphics, good gameplay, realistic world like going through a redlight in front of a cop and he will chase you or even chase you for speeding and the best part is you can pullover and pay the ticket or cap him or try speeding away.  The cars actually have a fuel system.  It also has an awesome story.  Â

Fallout 1 has aged like crap, I tried playing it again after all these years (and after FO3) and it didn't go over so well.
I can't think of any must-owns. All genres have improved significantly, there isn't really an old game that stands out above everything available today. Other than maybe a TBS such as the great Alpha Centauri. AC is still one of the, if not the best TBS games ever.

I disagree, I played Fallout 1 and 2 just recently and they are both still as awesome as the first time I played them.Â
