So I know a lot of people like doing these for fun...

If you were to build an RTX 4080 rig, what would it look like?

I figure Diablo 4 will force me back into PC gaming and I don't think I will settle for a GPU less than the RTX 4080.

Other than that I haven't been a PC gamer since 2009 so I am way OOTL. I guess Ryzen 9 CPU is overkill and Ryzen 5 maybe wouldn't do it justice so maybe a nice Ryzen 7? SSD needs to be PS5 level or better. enough RAM to not have to upgrade for a while, etc, etc.

How expensive are we talking? $1500? $2000? $2500?

Black and closed, probably.

Ok. You definitely don't need a 4080. But if you're ok with paying silly prices, go for it.

I don't know, and it depends on where you live. I think it would be much faster if you checked yourself.

Gonna chalk this up to people acting hypocritical and holier than the pope on the internet.

Nvidia initial 4000-series lineup smells fishy.

They are priced to sell more 3000-series cards.

I'm going to wait until ~Q2 2023 to see what the landscape looks like.

@Litchie:

Sorry maybe I was not clear.

Diablo 4 will *force* me into PC gaming, meaning I need something (unless my M1 Macbook Pro will suffice) to play Diablo 4. If I am going to invest in the space (I live in a dowtown apartment, so that means setting up desk in a small living room etc) for a PC setup you damn straight its going to be a proper one.

I am certain I could just pay $700 and get a D4 capable PC, but if I first decide to put a desk right next to my sofa I'll go ALL IN on the PC front and start playing PC games.

Gears 5, Halo Infinite, maybe the new Starfield if it doesn't suck, and also I want Dying Light 2, Metro Exodus, RDR2, GotG, Cyberpunk etc to run in 4K/60+ with RT and everything all maxed out.

my budget is $3-5000

@Litchie: And yeah, I want mine to be black, close, quiet, classy, discrete. Absolutely no RGB lighting whatsoever.

And no, I cannot check myself cause I literally do not know:

How much and what type of RAM?

Whats a good SSD?

what PSU do I need? how many watts? any other to consider than watts?

what motherboard do I get?

which CPU do I get? Intel? AMD? how many cores? threads? i5/i7/i9? Ryzen 5/7/9?

I did check PC Part Picker Norway myself and selected random components that sounded good to my ignorant ears/eyes. It ended up at around $2500 and I'm not even sure if its optimal. so we're talking $4000ish with the RTX 4080. Bluuuurgh

And thats before buying QD-OLED monitor.

Yeah, I got that. It's just that a 4080 is way better than anyone needs for any game. You can buy a cheaper card, play everything you want with that instead, then upgrade the card a few years later. This is infinitely cheaper to do than buying a 4080 now, just saying. A PC with a 3080 is more than a "proper" rig. But hey, you do you man. Just giving some tips.. I don't like when people waste their money in vain.

That's what I'm saying man. You can settle with a monster PC. You don't need a NASA one.

RTX 4080 is overkill for Diablo 4 and is a waste of money. It is way overpriced for the actual performance you are getting. The 4090 is the only GPU that makes sense of the new lineup in terms of price/performance, but is overkill for the majority of people.

As of right now, I would stay away from the DDR5 platforms as the RAM and motherboards associated with them are overpriced. I would go with 32GB DDR4 3600 CL16 with a 5800X3D and RTX 3080 and you will have a very good gaming PC that will last you years without overpaying for shit. You can always upgrade your GPU in the future to a RTX 5070 or whatever if you want more performance and the rest of your system will still be very good.

AMD is announcing their new GPUs on Nov 3. So, I would wait until then as they may announce a GPU that is superior to the RTX 3080 in that price range.

@Litchie: I see.

Back in my day, you needed 2 flagship GPUs running in SLI and even then, you couldn't max out Crysis. I remember getting 40fps in 1080p back in 2009. Sheesh.

the RTX 4090 does seem like on overkill, mainly due to its size and power consumption which (I guess) means I need a bigger case, motherboard, PSU, etc. plus it is expensive as ****.

I am worried RTX 3080 will be "too close" to PS5 performance. which is why I said to myself I'll hold out for the RTX 4000 series.

@BassMan: I know. Try to forget the Diablo 4 part. It'll start with Diablo 4, but after that I want to play 2023 and 2024 games in 4K at 120fps.

Also is eGPU an alternative? I have the lastest M1 Pro (120hz miniLED display etc) if I could just hook an RTX 3080, RTX 4070 or RTX 4080 to that that would be cool. Guess I would still have to crack Windows and stuff if I want Gears 5 etc

@Mozelleple112: RTX 3080 is way better than a PS5. You can get a RX 6650 XT from AMD that is a little bit better than a PS5 for $265 USD.

@Mozelleple112: 4K/120fps is demanding as fuk and unrealistic for most. That is enthusiast quality and RTX 4090 is the only way to go if you really want 4K high frame rates in games over the next few years. I will be getting a RTX 4090 which I will be using with my 3440x1440/175hz ultrawide monitor and 4K/120hz TV. Again, this is enthusiast level gaming and 1440p high refresh rate is still very good and a lot less demanding and less costly.

I would avoid eGPUs and Apple altogether.

@BassMan: Well I already have a $4500 Macbook Pro that I use for travels, web browsing, music, media, etc. I really dislike Windows and Windows PCs. I absolutely love it.

My dream is literally plugging an RTX 4080 into my Mac and running every PC game exactly like a 4080 rig would.

I guess we just aren't there yet :(

I guess Apple's CPU architecture is probably wonky af for games not to mention the software itself

So its enthusiast level PC for me. 4090 is probably too expensive for me though. I imagine the motherboard, case, PSU all have to be bigger..? remember I want this as discrete as possible lol

I do want the 16GB version of the 4080, but the suggested price here is way to high. Maybe I should save the money and spend it on CPU/mobo/RAM instead. Still rocking 3900X that I got close to release as well. Been eyeing a new case as well.

Oh and do mislike the 4080 labeling on the 12gb version. It's a 4060Ti or 4070 at best.

I'll wait for RDNA 3.
