i dont know which format PC will take. anyone know which drive type is selling more on PC?
anywho i dont think we will see DVD get replaced for quite some time. its still cheaper to make multiple DVDs compared to one blu-ray or HD-DVD disc. itll also be a very gradual process id imagine. it may become standard by 2011 but id be surprised to see anything major before that.
of course we may also nee neither. downloads may become the replacement for DVD in a few years.
and to end on a narly note....imagine PC games come on both formats depending on publisher. PCs would need 2 drives or a hybrid drive which would cost a bit more moolah. ugh....lets hope that doesent happen (its very unlikely).
We are not necesarily evil.
Some do it because our under developed countries dont have game distributors so a gamecosts x3 of the normal price, its not fair for me to pay 180 or 150 for a new game when i should be paying 60,why should ihave to care for the people that created the game when they dont care about me?
But dont turn this in a piracy Evil or not topic
Anyway, yeah let them be Blu-Ray im saying that it will be for... 2009
Never. Why? It's unnecessary. Plus it's a stop-gap way of fighting the evil pirates.monco59
what are you talking about? the pc has constantly been upgrading its media storage. from floppy disc, to cd, to dvd. its just a matter of time before they start releasing games and programs on an new form of media storage. i think it will be blu-ray but i left the option of hd-dvd open.

I pay a 100 bucks for every console game I buy, slightly less for PC games. And I do it gladly! You know why? Because if pirates are left rampant, there won't be a game industry left. Simple.
Oh, and just a heads-up, I didn't turn this topic into one about piracy, you did. Peace...
if i ever have to leave or leave piracy i will leave piracy

exactly! That's one of the strengths of the PC. It's constantly evolving and changing, for the better. One of the two new formats will eventually replace DVDs. It's almost a guarantee. My money is BD, as it's a larger format disc and all the above mentioned formats are/were used for more than just games. There are many other types of programs that use discs not to mention an assortment of other uses, such as backups. Digital distribution may be ans up and coming trend, but I don't see it nixing out physical discs in the near future.

I only own about 2 games (BF2 and Dawn of War) that are on multiple cds.Actually, BF2 is on one dvd >.> Even Oblivion is on ONE dvd, like other users have said, there jsut isn't even the need for it. Even if there was, how many people would drop 800$ on a blu ray drive???
I think it'll be mostly digital downloadsTerrorantula
Agreed. There will be VERY few PC games that ever get released on HD-DVD/Bluray. The games that do will simply do it just to say "OMFG We needed a HD-DVD to fit it on a single disc...our game pwnz!!"... Of course they'll do everything in their power to make it that large (not compressing anything, trash files..ect). The future of gaming is digital distribution, period. As PC gamers, we're pretty much already there.... Every single mainstream game coming out these days is available for digital download. I guarantee 10yrs from now finding a PC game on store shelves will be a very rare find... The only reason it's not happening sooner is because a lot of ISPs still don't offer decent bandwidth yet.

DVDs are now the standard format for publishers in distributing their games. This is probably the last year before CDs are not longer be used by any publisher.
Two things will need to happen before we start seeing games in Blu ray discs. Blu ray drives are priced at $700. They will need tocome down in price by alot and more then 50% of the customers have a blu ray drive. Games will need to be at least 35 gigs in size before publishers will decide to sell their games on blu-ray.

Piracy Will never go away no matter what media they use...
Gonna throw this out there since I had read it someplace else (not that I believe everything I read). The great media war that is going on right now is DVD VS. Blu-ray. The previous great media war pitted VHS vs. Beta. VHS won. Why? Put simply...porn. Seriously. Back in the day the adult movie industry said they wanted to start distributing their product and the good folks at Beta said "no way are you peddling your filth with our product." The VHS guys said "if you got the money...welcome aboard!" After a multi-billion dollar injection from the adult industry VHS became the most popular format and sealed Beta's fate. Now here we are in present day. DVD has said "if you go the money...wlecome aboard!" The good folks over at Blu-ray have said "you aren't peddling your filth with our product." Hmmm.....I dunno know but if I wanted to become the media format of choice I don't think I would turn my nose up at a multi-billion dollar industry.
But anyway, yah unfortunately I think downloads are probably going to become more an industry standard once more households get fiber-to-the-home setup.

Downloadable games is the direction PC gaming is headed. I personally prefer to download a game rather thanpurchasing aDVD. Blu ray or HD DVD is far from main stream so there will not be anygames on them for many many years. Games still come on CD Rom.

these were the days before the internet, however. you can get free porn easily now.

It took some time to get where they are now, but digital distribution is really helping the pc gaming community. A lot of independent game devs have made their money this way and it's getting more rewarding.
There's no need for Blu-ray for a very very long time, as DVD's are the standard and you install them on your harddrive anyway. I do think Blu-ray will take the crown though over HD-DVD.
so say if you guys get blu-ray. What if the systems get a way better resolution what will you guys do then. i mean what if Nintendo gets better graphics then pc i mean better then blu-ray then whatCaptain-Ichigo
To my knowledge, at-least with a PC... the only connection graphics and the digital medium used to hold them, is just that. Graphics take up space, and the larger the medium, the higher definition the graphics. Reading speed and stuff shouldn't have anything to do with it, the whole 'installing' thing strips 99% of the files onto the hard drive so that your disk isn't needed for anymore then just to prove you bought the game.
When it comes down to it though, I don't think Blu-ray will do the job, only because it's much to large. We would be spending money for a digital medium that is for the most part, empty.

Imagine installing 20 - 50 gig games and the load times. Hard Drive read speed isn't that fast to begin with.
Some of you guys need to get yer Blu-Ray drive pricings right, burners for that are $450 atm, and I'd assume the readers are roughly $200, not $600+.
Anyhow, Blu-Ray ain't going to happen at people said, it'll be DVD for a long while considering how %#*@ing long it took for developers to actually start using DVDs, and even then, some new PC releases are still coming out on multiple-CDs!
By the time something like Blu-Ray or HD-DVD would be considered, digital downloading would be a more obvious choice for publishers as it's a crapload cheaper to deliver games via that route, and the fact internet speeds keep increasing around the world, which will make it all the more obvious to do so down the road.

lol@blu-raystoppingpiracy, anyone who wants to pirate games is never going to buy them anyway. Piracy is a constant thats never going to go away or decline, but its never going to be that big a deal if JoeShmoe finds it too cumbersome to do so.
Blu ray disc space is not a benfit. Iomega is developing technology to make standard dvd's hold 800gb. 35gb games can be downloaded in just a couple of hours with broadband. Verizon fios is very fast and the fiber optics is only going to get better. In korea they have a 1gig connection speed. Will take them less than a minute to download a game or high def movie.own1xon
Only S. Korea right? Cuz N. Korea is f*cked up by Kim Jong.
I think it will eventually happen in 2009 but thats mostly because I think that there is going to be some lunatic publisher that has no business doing so will. And you know what $400 for a format that just came out thats not exactly unheard of, the price will definitely come down and will be more or less affordable in 2009. As for digital distribution, I'm just going to say no, its not going to replace the traditional method of distribution simply beacause the size of games is also increasing, we are beginning to see multiple DVD games and by that time its just faster to just go out and buy it or get it overnighted to you.
As for HD-DVD right now its not doing so well and for the most part consumer eyes happen to be on blu ray thanks to the great big movies that have have been released on it. So unless something to change that happens I don't see HD-DVD staying but of course there is the dual format which may or may not be a good idea, kind of a wait and see on that one.
