I currently have a 24 inch widescreen Dell Ultrasharp, i was wondering if a single 8800 GTX EVGA will max out Oblivion at 1900x1200, and if it cannot, is there any video card on the market that can?

(my other parts include a 250gb Maxtor HD, 2gb DDR ram, 3.0GHZ processor)

Your CPU, if it's what I suspect it is (Intel Pentium P4), might need help in scenes with numerous NPCs/ Opponents, but that VGA is the one that surely is as close to maxing the game outside of those mob scenes, as any that now exists.

Yeah a few days I got a P.O.S computer made in 97 for free, so canthis run the first half-life?

233Mhz Pentium MMX

128MB of ram (i understand this was worshipped back in the day)

8GB hard drive with about 5GB left

ATI RAGE Pro Turbo 8MB

Win XP PRO (I upgraded this from win 2000 soon after i got it.)

So, is this PC good enough to play Half-Life 1? If so, at what settings? The only thing i'm really worried about is the proccesor.

Atomicfireball

Go get a new computer. Now. Lol but yeah those are the minimum requirements to play that game so you should be fine :D

You could be in luck, depending on your MB & Chipset. Quite a few of the better quality late-P4 era MBs for the s775 sockets are capable of handling the newer CPUs, and with a decent C2D added, the potential slow-downs with large AI demand situations are covered.

Hmmm...what would yield better results on my monitor? I have a 19in. Widescreen Acer LCD monitor and I am going to either get an nVidia GeForce 8800 GTS 320mb or the 640 mb version. Which of the two would work best with my current monitor???

So far, all of the displays here are standard 4:3 ratio. However, I am fairly sure that I have seen that the 320 MB GTS will hanlde the 4:3 version of what you have(1400 by 1100), and the next step would be if your display could go up around 1700 by 1100 or so, where the 640 MBs would be working. Those larger VRAM onboard amounts allow large textures to swap in and out at the very high resolutions that some of the expensive displays (and the older medium quality CRTs) can offer.

You should do a little verification, tracking some reviews, because my recollection is slightly foggy on details. If you plan to upgrade to one of those higher resolution displays soon, then the 640 could be the right one for you.

How well would a 640 MB GeForce 8800 GTS run Crysis and Gears of War? - as in, would the graphics have to be set onto a lower setting than the default?

EDIT: with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor E6700 (2.66GHz) with 4GB RAM (DDR2-667MHz dual channel) and Vista.

The last several games that I have tested here that put high demands on the hardware had their own starting points that were far from ideal. If anything, after these games chose the settings built into their launchers' software, there was plenty of upward room for tweaking the settings. The "default" is usually rather conservative, except the "Medium" one used when the launcher cannot recognize the hardware, and the game owner has a very new, but very low quality, video processor.

You should also take into consideration the recent trend for System Requirements to suddenly start scaling upward in the last few days before a new product goes gold, and they finally get around to throwing their Beta Game against some of the lower end PC components they hoped to include in thir minimums, but find that they cannot. "Recommended Levels" also may shift at the last minute, but with your VGA choice, you will be well insulated.

gears of war should run fine because its a game built on the Unreal 3 engine. i dont know why people keep asking about crysis because the game isnt finished yet and they are not done optimising. however they said at E3 they were running it on 1x8800GTX without the settings full (but were very high) and they said it was smooth most of the time, im not sure about the rest of their pc spec at the time, but expect that it will run on your machine, although maybe not at Ultra high with all AA + AF

With these requirements, not a chance:

System requirements:

2.8GHz processor
1GB Ram
6.5GB hard disk space
DVD-Rom drive
Windows XP/2000/Vista
graphic card 256MB (GeForce 7300 or better)

Incidentally, don't believe nVidia's advertising about their FXes. None of them have native Pixel Shader Two functions, so they run any shader-heavy games extremely slowly, and the 5200 is the very slowest.

A comprehensive list of games rated 8.0 or higher by Gamespot that will run on a PC with a Athlon Thunderbird 1Ghz CPU and 512MB RAM or better exists here.

I hope some of you find it useful for finding cool games you might not have known existed but that will run on your aging PC.

Cheers

Ok so you're saying that on my monitor, which has a max resolution of 1440x900 (It's an Acer 19in. Widescreen LCD monitor), the nVidia GeForce 8800 GTS 320mb will work better than the 640mb version??? But this is only because the other 320mb is not needed for my resolution right? Unless of course I bought another monitor with higher resolution settings...

I just bought a very expensive alienware lap top yesterday, i went with alienware because i thought it would handle the things i wanted to do, gaming,music/video editing.I wanted to be able to play new computer games like oblivion. This laptop comes with windows vista, and this morning i read on the oblivion compant site that i might have some trouble with the game and all the downloads avaiable for it , like the ones on gamespot. So heres the question, am I going to have trouble with new and old games and applacations because of windows vista? I would be greatful for any advice.

Hmm I have vista and so far I haven't run into any problems...yet. Just look for downloads and applications that will be compatible for Vista.

Hmm...if you can play it than it will most likely be at the lowest settings =p. Your whole system is what is hurting you so you either need a complete overhaul on your parts or a new system altogether. I read though that you won't be able to get a new computer till 09' eh? Yeah, I'm gutted, my parents won't get a new one till then :( But I might be able to save up for some new parts myself. Anyway, as long as I can run lotro, I don't mind turning the settings down.

Most of ATI's video processors have been equipped for one or another Crossfire (mechanical differences) since the middle of the X1xx generation. Since both cards have to be the same, you don't choose the Crossfire, you choose the cards, accepting with them the variety of Crossfire included, and in the majority of comparisons, a single next-upward card beats twins of the lower cards, the only pair, therefore, that makes logical sense is the one matching two HD 2900 XT cards.

mahbar

There has been at least one other person I believed was joking when asking a question in this thread yesterday or the day before, and now I feel the same way about this question, because I don't think a 1.4 GHz Pentium can run the game at all, certainly not "smoothly".

FEAR Minimum Specifications:

Pentium® 4 1.7 GHz or equivalent processor

If there's the slightest chance you do not really know what "smooth" means, then you already need a better PC for the 2006 games, let alone for the 2007 and 2008 crop!

The official requiremenmts for that game were extremely low:

System requirements

1.2GHz CPU,

256MB RAM,

DirectX 7 graphics card

Your barely-minimum RAM is going to mean a lowered performance, but Valve does tend to build in a Scale-down capability that preserves game play usability across a wide range of hardware, so it won't be a major loss of efficiency to run on such an old and obsolete PC.

Please people don't ask if your PC can play Crysis. It is not out yet, nobody knows, so just don't ask.Wasdie

as cool as that would be I think a wave of stupid has struck everyone, thus rendering their common sense useless and disabling their ability to use google >_>
