Hello Everyone, I'm experiencing some problems with Max Payne 3. The game seems to stutter and has a really low overall fps that makes it unplayable. The weird thing is that it's probably not my system specs: AMD Phenom X6 3,20 ghz, 8gb RAM, AMD Radeon HD 6870. Also there is no difference when I put the game on the lowest possible graphics or the highest, oddly enough it seems to perform even slightly better on the highest?! My HDD is kind of old though like 2009/2010, but I'm able to play games like BF3 and Arkham Asylum on high settings without any problems... If anyone has some advice regarding this matter it would be greatly appreciated. Thanx in advance!

On Nvidia cards some games don't properly run at the GPUs fastest clock speeds, they remain in desktop mode, maybe thats what happens with your GPU. Setting power management from adaptive to prefer maximum performance in the Nvidia system control fixes this.

There should be a similar option within the CCC somewhere I think.

Try turning off FXAA.FelipeInside

Better turn off the MSAA and leave the FXAA on. MSAA uses much more resources.

It's the application's vsync. It's out of control. Force it through AMD's controller.

Thx for all your replies. It's weird to me that even with everything off/low MSAA, FSAA everything, it's still slow as hell. I can try to force it through AMD though but I don't know. It seems like I'm gonna be missing out on this one and just have to take it back. I don't even care about playing it on lower settings as much to compensate for gameplay but even that doesn't seem to work. Is it possible my HDD is causing this problem? or directx 11 version or something? Edit: Ok by now I have tried turning on and off every single option in CCC AND in game, I get no difference in performance whatsoever, I also couldn't find anyone with the same problem on the web. Is it just my luck?

Do you frequently alt+tab? That could be the issue, since that happens to me and my friend. Doing that pretty much tanks the framerate so we have to exit and reenter the game

Uninstall reinstall drivers. Roll back to an older driver if you have to.. or if you haven't, update to newest driver as this is a new game. During the process, make sure you use Driver Sweeper. You'd be surprise you got other drivers lurking in there. Other than that, and all those already suggested, I don't know what else to say.

I'm using a GTX 580, but yeah, perhaps MP3 doesn't like TC's driver and AMD card. I use Nvidia Panel to force vsync and the game runs beautifully now.

I'll definetly will try that as soon as I can get to it thanx! And FelipeInside to answer your question no, this is the first time this happened to me with a game. Games like BF3 and Batman AC all run like a train on high settings.

Ok This is just ridiculous. I payed money for a good system, paid full price for the game, but it just simply wont run in normal fps. On directx 9 with low texture shaders etc, no MSAA no FXAA (or whatever), no vsync, it doesn't matter it's all the same performance. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling all the drivers, forcing all kinds of sh1t on my graphics card etc... All the suggestions here i've tried no luck whatsoever. On the plus side though it's so slow I get to play Max Payne 3 with unlimited bullet time all day everyday, hell I only use bullet time to speed up the game once in a while... (yes bullet time is actually faster some times) Nice job Rockstar.

Lol dude, if you had read my first post I gave my specs. Those should do fine, they don't. It's weird because when more enemies appear it gets slower, so I'm thinking maybe the game got issues with my cpu or something.

Hey there, i'am happy to find this because i have exactly the same Problem with Max Payne 3. My System: AMD Phenom II X6 1090T (3,2Ghz) 8GB Vengeance LP DDR3 @ 1333 GIGABYTE 990FXA-UD5 GIGABYTE HD7950 3072MB GDDR5 Corsair Force 3 SSD and Western Digital Black HDD Tested with Catalyst 12.4, 12.6 beta and 12.3 Same bad performance with 1650x1050 or 800x600, DX9 - DX11. -.- Vsync off / on... changes nothing for me at this game. It must be a Rockstar-Problem again.. same like GTA IV before, but at least in GTA i have round about 80-230 FPS with this Card now on 800x600 (depending on location). *lol* I think Nvidia payed them a lot of money to make this game runs better on Intel / Nvidia systems.... no its a joke, but who knows. The days after Release i finished MP3 with my old MSI K9A2 Platinum Board (790FX) with 6GB DDR2 Ram and Powercolor HD 5770 1GB Card. I had not very much FPS there but it was playable even in DX11 with 30-50FPS. So i thought it just need better RAM to power my Hexacore. XD Hm... but now i payed much money for new Systemparts (380 Euro für GPU, and 200 Euro for Mainboard and DDR3 RAM) and the game runs more bad like before. I have a clean Windows 7 64bit installation now on my SSD. Tested with 3 Catalyst drivers. Now i think this game isnt optimised for Hexacores or the new 7xxx ATI Cards. Thats ridiculous. I tested a few other games like Metro 2033, Mafia 2, Dirt 3, Gothic 4 Arcania, Nuclear Dawn, TF2... all of them runs smoth on DX11 or HD Textures at 1680x1050. I have at least 40FPS there. Maybe its only a driver issue.. dont know. I report this to Rockstar Support, but they reply only standard Text. MSI Afterburner shows me only 11 FPS sometimes, feels like endless Bullettime. Maybe you can run the Unigine Heaven Benchmark to compair? FPS: 76.7 Scores: 1931 Min FPS: 9.4 Max FPS: 158.2 Hardware Binary: Windows 32bit Visual C++ 1600 Release Mar 7 2012 Operating system: Windows 7 (build 7601, Service Pack 1) 64bit CPU model: AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 1090T Processor CPU flags: 3199MHz MMX+ 3DNow!+ SSE SSE2 SSE3 SSE4A HTT GPU model: AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series 8.951.0.0 3072Mb Settings Render: direct3d11 Mode: 1680x1050 fullscreen Shaders: high Textures: high Filter: trilinear Anisotropy: 4x Occlusion: enabled Refraction: enabled Volumetric: enabled Tessellation: normal And in 3DMark11 i have Score: P6409 3DMarks Graphics score: 6946 PHYSICS SCORE : 5358 COMBINED SCORE: 4987 Lets hope that ATI or Rockstar help us with optimised Drivers and Patches. -.- AMEN Greetings from Germany Timmy

Might be an issue with cpu power management. This would be found under Control Panel>Power management.

Weird. I can play the game smoothly near maxed out @ 6048 x 1080 with a HD 7970 Crossfire set up. I can also play the game maxed out @ 1920 x 1080 with a single HD 7970. Max Payne 3 is bias towards Nvidia cards since it is a TWiMtBP game but AMD cards work just fine.

I have the exact problem.

My PC specs are:

MSI 990FXA-GD80

AMD Phenom ii x4 955

AMD Radeon HD 6850 (MSI Cyclone)

8 GB DDR3 1600 MHZ RAM

Corsair Force 3 SSD

Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64

With the lowest graphics options, I get around 15 FPS. On outside and crowded places, it's even decreases to 7-8 FPS sometimes. I reinstalled the game and the graphics card drivers and tried the latest AMD VISION but nothing changes. This is never happened before with any other recent game.

I asked Rockstar Support if they have tested MP3 with Phenom II x6 with HD7950 before and here is the answer: "Thanks for your reply. We have tested the game on the AMD Radeon HD 7970 3GB RAM running on a AMD FX8150 8 Core x 3.6 GHZ. These were the highest specs the game was tested to run on and the performance was impressive. Unfortunately, you may have to try rolling back the driver to a previous version or waiting until the next update. Have you tried contacting AMD or visiting their forums to see if others are experiencing similar issues?" Hm... Thats why i have open a new thread at amd games forum: http://forums.amd.com/game/messageview.cfm?catid=428&threadid=159985&enterthread=y Maybe one of you guys with the same problem wants to post your specs too? I will write this issue via email too, later. You can do this as well, too. If nobody complains, is nothing done about it. I think, if this would be an CPU issue, tha game should run better in lower resolution and lower detail level, but its same if we play at DX11 high or DX9 low graphic settings. :( So i think its a driver problem. Zeussss, you're right. I have big trouble in chapter II in the Dance Hall. Or later the sniper action with Heli. And the Airport is very hard too. Unplayable sh**. Iam very dissappointed. And once again, Rockstar seems to push the error in AMD's shoes. I tried older Drivers till 12.3. I have no time to test all the time, i want play finaly. And now we have to wait for better Driver support of AMD or what? Best Regards

I hope so... i found new unofficial beta Driver: http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=364400 AMD Cataöyst 12.x (9.00 june 12) Hey can you run heaven benchmark 3.0 basic with medium tesselation and post results here? From 12.4 to 12.x beta i have a little improvement. The minimum frame rate has increased from 9 fps to 21. But the score is almost same -> 1931 to 1958. Old 3DMark11 scores: P6409 3DMarks 6946 Graph CS Score 5358 Physics score 4987 Combined Score New beta: P6570 3DMarks 7129 5455 5129 But its still not enough for Max Payne 3. But it runs a little bit faster now. I think they are on a good way.

At least it confirms that your problem with the game more than likely is a driver issue.

Hi,

I have exactly the same issue as the OP. Extremely low FPS even with the lowest settings, actually the FPS is 15 average either with highest settings or with lowest settings.

My spec is:

AMD Phenom II X4 3.0Ghz

4GB RAM

Nvidia GTS250 1GB

I can play Arkham City and ACR @ 1920x1080 with almost everything on high.

All my drivers are up to date.

Edit: I tried rolling back to older driver, still same problem.....

Thanks.....

Guys, the problem is solved for me. :D Problem was : I made exception at the wrong place inside Bitdefender! There are two places to make exceptions. The most important you will find here: "Open BD > Antivirus > Advanced Settings > Exclusions > + > add Max payne.exe file from your installed folder (its better to add both, luncher as well.)" Read this : http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2734360&page=2 Now the game runs very smooth. Thx for interest.

Well, thank you very much for the solution. I added those two exe files to exclutions and now I'm playing the game on almost highest settings. Damn Bitdefender :)

I remember Max Payne 2 having the same problem when it came out. The only way I managed to fix it was with an upgrade. Hopefully you won't have to go that far.

Are you adding MSAA? If so that's the reason, take it off! Plus the game is on the demanding side for that.

Thanx in advance!cs26

It's because your system sucks.

Hello everyone. I am getting this issue with a computer I share with my friends. My main computer has no problems but here are the specs for the computer with the problems. OS: Windows 7 64-bit CPU: AMD Athlon II X2 260 RAM: 8.00GB DDR3 @ 669Mhz Motherboard: Gigabyte M68MT-S2 Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 Ti HDD: 1TB Hitachi Now I do not use BitDefender on this computer, and all the other solutions so far haven't worked. I have the game through Steam and all other games work fine. I know this isn't the best setup but it is obvious I'm getting the issue the other guys had. 10-80 fps that changes like crazy and a weird lag when looking around. Like the others, changing the graphics does little to no change. Thanks!
