They didn't call them GPUs until the first Geforce 256 came out. The first 3d card that nvidia widely sold to the consumer market was the Riva 128. Anyone have one of those? I had an ATI Rage Pro 4mb, a 3dfx Voodoo 2 12mb, and a Voodoo Banshee 16mb. I also did buy a Geforce FX 5200 in 2003 when it was new to upgrade from a 16mb voodoo3!!

Back in my school days we were given the old hardware. I could bring back home one of the old voodoo cards, and I remember that, when I was in practice found some very old card form manufacture that doesn't exist no more (as I know anyway). I can't remember its name tho. Anyway if I pay a visit to my school I am sure that I would found worst cards than you. He-he I remember that one time we entered classroom and there was some old PC open up. I pretty sure that it was Pentium II but I cannot tell other parts. And it was running HDD repair and it was half way till end. When we get back week after same PC there running repair on HDD, and I don't think it moved a %. That doesn't have anything to do with this topic but I am a little bit bored :) .

throwing my hat in to the ring, i have still working a voodoo banchee and a s3 verge on two seperate systems, that s3 is mighty sexy for games such as descent and quake 1 i have older stuff but its not rely for 3d gaming its more 486 ide video boards and a 286 board that will only display an ega output.

The 5200 was and still is probably the worst pound for pound card ever released. Followed closely by pretty much everything else in the 5XXX nvidia cycle.

I"m using a GF5200FX. Playing GTASA alright except the NPCs disappear a lot, can't figure it out. Thing that sucks though is my brother in law gave me two 3.2ghz business PCs (no graphics card) from his employer who is updating but they have a 250W PSU and some funky 1GB RAM (200 pin) so that is way over my head for upgrading. I want to play Left 4 Dead so bad and I'm not touching a 360 with how pathetically unreliable they made them. If I could put in a new card without upgrading the PSU I would be happy, I don't need max settings at all (I am content playing GTASA at 800x600 with a nice framerate).

Yes! The S3 Virge. You win automatically.. that was the WORST 3D card of ALL TIME. As some reviewers put it: "The world's first 3d graphics decelerator."

Ohhh.. I have to disagree with that one. I had a Geforce FX 5200 AGP for over 1.5 years, and it served me well. I was nearly maxing all my games @ 1280x1024. A great card for Jedi Outcast/Academy/Star Trek Bridge Commander/Ground Control 2. It definitely wasn't a high-end or a great card, but not nearly the worst. The worst ever was the S3 Virge.

you all loose to my 3d rage pro turbo 4mb videocard, even worse then intergrated graphics. Lets just say pacman is light years away from running well on that card.

BTW do you think my ATI rage pro can serve as a backup on my pc without problems because I wanna run some old 8bit 3d games on my pc.

haha, that was funny and hartsickdiscipl, about them not being called GPU's yet, come on, if they render graphics, they're gpu's, it may not be able to get a decent framerate in quake2, but its still a gpu, haha, maybe at like 640 by 480, maybe

actually they have been useing rage and "PRO" for a few years and every generation of cards had it, the one I specified was the first generation of rage pro which was so bad that it couldent even run windows 95 because it didnt support 2 bit palette. The PC was a AT&T. I remember useing DOS os on it.

There is a technical reason why they started calling them "GPUs" instead of just video or graphics chips. The old ones didn't do half the work that "GPUs" do, more was offloaded to the CPU. I don't know if you want to hear the long, drawn out explanation, but it has to do with a great feature Nvidia introduced with the first Geforce 256 called "hardware T+L":POh.. and as for the Quake 2 benchmarking, why don't they do that anymore?

You kids with your fancy modern AGP graphics cards!

I still have an old Vesa local bus card (in a box with an EISA TV card).
