I put my life on Norton AntiVirus.  I know of three computers that were crashed by McAffee, one of which was mine, and with free programs all I can say is you get what you pay for.  I've used three anti-virus programs and Norton is by far the most effective.

yeah definately norton is the best I have used so far.  And if RAM is a problem, then you need to upgrade your computer.  Goodluck with anything else you use.

I used Norton Internet Security at first, and like mentioned before, it was a serious system hog. Also they wanted $70 a year to renew all of their services (firewall, anti-virus, spam filter).

After Norton I used the Mcafee's Internet Security package, which freed up a lot of RAM and allowed my games to run much better, but it was also expensive ($80 a year) and conflicted with certain programs for some reason.

Now I use PC-illin, it was $25 for the first two years I had it, now they want $45 to renew this time, but I've had no problems with it at all, and it runs very efficiently on my system. I recommend it.

You may want to check into Nod32, I never used it, but my bud who's pretty computer savvy swears by it.

Good luck!

Its a grey area ... we have no forums for applications :(  He got his answer and that is good.

I would have said PC-cillin but I just went to renew and they said I had to do a wire transfer which I just didn't have time to do, and then they charged me for not completeing the process when they could just charge my card like another company would have.

I would suggest you get AVG 7.5 Free Edition. Norton is just power grabber, it does not even work that good.

AVG is one of the worst antivirus by many antivirus comparatives (just before OneLiveCare), If you are looking for a free antivirus, go definitively for AVAST!, detect much more viruses, have a much shorter scan time then AVG and is way more efficient agaisnt new virus then AVG, AVG detecting less then 10% of the new viruses. Anyone who said that karspersky suck don't know what he is talking about, it is one of the best antivirus you can find ATM not the best though, Norton is still good, it's the only antivirus with 0% of false detection on new virus on the market while having about 15% of detection for new viruses (which is in the average, AVG having less then 5%), Norton do use some ram, but if you have a 2gb of ram you're more then OK cuz many games don't take the entire 2gb of ram, and a lot of Norton is can be trasnfered in your virtual memory if needed,

So if you're looking for a free antivirus go for AVAST definitively not AVG and for one that cost money NOD32 may be a good choice

i use nod32 ... its great ... one downside when it updates it gives you like 3 pop ups in a row that minus whatever game your on which can really tax your patience especially if its some buggy game that crashes everytime it gets minimized. im not sure if theres a setting that changes this ... too lazy.

would you like too update?

ok

downloading update.

ok

update complete!

ok....................... shutup now kthxbye

Kaspersky and NOD32 are the market leaders. If you don't want to pay for anti virus software then try Avast.

Opportune time to post this question...my AV expires at the end of this month:

After doing research I'm not sure if I'm going to renew PC-Cillin. Apparently the 2007 version can cause major problems, and requires that you dismantle and never use Spybot again.

I use an entire security center, so after further research it looks like a good buy is the ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite 2007. It comes with Kaspersky AV, which has received some acclaim on this thread, and the zonealarm firewall utility. Unfortunately, you have to completely remove any previous security software COMPLETELY, including regedits if you want this to install & work properly. Also it has some conflicts with System Mechanic if you use it.

I have some decisions to make as well!

If you're going with a free AV, I recommend getting Sygate Personal Firewall for added protection. Its a solid free firewall.

I'll agree with that.  AVG seemed to suck up almost as many resources as Norton's.

Norton is a RAM hog.

AND evil.

I quit nortion long ago

don't they make you pay a fee to update it, and if you don't it doesn't work anymore?

My Anti-Virus setup is free and works fine. I've had no problems at all:

  1. AVG 7.5 Free >> Good for all viruses
  2. CCleaner >> Good for fixing your registry and getting rid of temporary internet crap. (hence the name, Crap Cleaner)
  3. SpyBot- Search and Destroy >> Good for getting rid of little viruses and cookies.

Not a system hog, and just plain easy to use.
Plus, you can install it on up to three PC's...
