Should I wait for GTX 11xx series or buy a 1060 6GB?

Hey guys I'm building a new rig and I'm starting to get a bit impatient with waiting for Nvidia's GTX 11XX cards to come out. Nvidia has said recently we won't be seeing any next generation cards anytime soon, I'm not sure if they're lying just so can clear out stock especially since its possible they ramped up production of cards in case them mining craze was going to last longer than it did, but it seems possible based on how badly AMD is doing and we have reports now of a major OEM returning 300,000 GPUs and graphics card makers such as Asus, MSI and Gigabyte are claiming to have an excess of GPUs now too.

This would explain why GPU prices for cards such as the 1060 and above are almost normal. I see some 6GB 1060s in stock for around $300 which is the same price as it would cost to buy it directly from Nvidia. I've also noticed that the GTX 1060 from EVGA went on sale recently for $250 on Amazon and $230 on Newegg. I also know that EVGA has a trade in program so just incase new cards do come out in the next 3 months I could always trade in the GTX 1060 and get a GTX 1170 or 1160 with most of its cost covered.

Anyway what is tempting me to want to buy a GPU now is that my current build is starting to reach its limit. I'm using an overclocked 1GB GTX 570 and AMD Phenom II X6 processor. If I had gotten a 2GB GTX 570 I probably would've milked it for at least another year or two but the 1GB of VRAM is starting to limit it to the point a GTX 750 ti could beat it in a game that uses more than 1GB of VRAM. It seems it is also starting to fail because of old age, I've been getting some bluescreens every now and then and the cause of them is GPU related. Updating to the latest drivers or using old ones don't seem to work neither is putting back on stock settings, it appears the GPU itself is on death row. The other reason that is tempting me to buy a new GPU now is that I recently got a 49" 4K TV. It's a TLC Smart TV and it was a very good bang for the buck deal with 15.1ms response time. The colors are fantastic even with HDR disabled. I really want to to finish my console sized PC build so I can start playing games in 1440p - 4K with maxed/high settings graphics.

I know that if I get a GTX 1060 I won't be able to play everything at 60fps in 4k but that doesn't bother me 1440p and 1600p are still good resolutions plus if it is a single player game and I can get at least 40fps average then I'll keep 4k on. The difference between high and ultra in some games such as Battlefield 1 and The Division are non existent but eat up performance so for games like that I won't be aiming for max graphical settings.

Unless I get some solid news on the GTX 1170 and 1160 release date I don't think I have it in me to wait.

The only part of my build I have so far is the case which is a Silverstone RVZ03B. I haven't decided on whether I'll use Ryzen 3 or Ryzen 5 as the CPU and I'm trying to find a good cheap mini itx mobo with built in bluetooth and wifi.

I've got the Ryzen 5 1400 with a 1060 6gb gpu. I love it, I play everything on high to ultra, it never drops below 60fps @ 1080p. Battlefield 1 I played on Ultra no fps drops ran smoothly. I can't really fault it. I never OC either.

I believe I read somewhere they may come out in a few months. I have started buying parts for my second PC already with a new keyboard and m.2 970 Pro (512GB), 970 Evo, (1TB) (and will probably get another 1 or a 2 TB option and waiting for Threadripper 2 release and will get a motherboard then and hopefully the next generation of GPUs are out.

imo if your immediate or short-term goal is to play it on a large screen at 4K resolutions, you might want to wait for the new cards to come out.

A 10xx series card is generally good enough for your regular monitors, but it looks like you want and need a lot of horsepower.

@NoodleFighter: If you wish to max settings at 2K resolution you should buy GTX1070 and Ryzen 5 or i5 CPU.

@NoodleFighter: GTX 1060 is a 1080p card. Not very good for 1440p and don't even bother with 4K.

You'll need a lot stronger GPU to get 60fps at 4K even when you turn down the settings.

Most of my nephews settled on the GTX 1070 as a good compromise. Me? I stuck with a 6GB 1060 because I have no plans to go beyond 1080p.

Just get a 1070 and let it run out its useful life. By then, there should be a new generation of cards out.

I've been considering the GTX 1070 but it feels a little too pricey for me since around that much I'd feel I'd be better off waiting for the next gen cards while I see the 1060 6GB as a good bang for the buck that I could trade in/sell later to cover at least half the cost of a next gen card and its cheap. i've found another EVGA GTX 1060 6GB on sale for $250 and I'm a bit worried it may run out of stock if I sit on this for more than a day. I think my plan is going to be buying a GTX 1060 and in the next 3 months if new cards do come out I'll take advantage of EVGAs step up program to get the new card at a low cost. The other thing is even if I got a GTX 1070 I still wouldn't be able to play everything at 4k 60fps ultra/high for games such as DOOM 2016 and The Witcher 3.

I see some rumors of a the GTX 1180 coming out at the end of July so hopefully if it turns out true by the time a GTX 1170 or 1160 come out it should be August/September.

As per your requirement the shortest answer is that you should wait for the gtx 11xx series because running games at 4K wouldn't suffice with a GTX 1060.

Wait. Looking back at history, the 1160 will have the specs of 1070 but with better power consumption.

Alright you guys have managed to convince me somewhat to wait. I'll wait out July and August to see if new GPUs come. Since if the release order is anything like the previous two once the GTX 1180 and 1170 come out the 1160 should be released earlier in the begging or halfway through the next month which should give some idea of much longer I'd have to wait because I do have to wait until next year for a new card then I'd buy the GTX 1060 without hesitation.

I would say wait for the 11th gen GPUs since they provide a lot more vram which will help you at 4k. Maybe until they are released, you could buy a cheaper GPU such as a 1050 in order to still get a pretty decent gaming experience in the meantime

I agree with people here

1160 should be a 1070 more power efficient

since you want to buy a 1060 I assume is 1080p your objective. 1160 will last you much longer with 60+ fps. its worth the wait

also 1700 ryzen is at 210-220€ now (it was 300 days ago) so Id say get a ryzen 1700 or 1700x and a 1160 gpu.

Pretty powerful mid range pc

If 1160 does release it wont be until two-three months after the 1180 comes out. and who knows when they will start actually coming out, since there is a massive surplus of Pascal gpus.

Those new cards will be more expensive than 1000 series when released (*rumored*) 1180~$700 1170 ~$500 1160 most likely ~$400. If your GTX 570 is failing grab a GTX 1050ti or a used gpu to hold you over until you decide to upgrade that Phenom 2 , A GTX 1050ti is a big upgrade over a GTX 570. Getting a GTX 1060 or faster gpu will be severely held back by that Phenom X6. while it will be a massive upgrade from a 570 you wont see its true potential.

I'd see if you can get a 1060 6GB for $250. The 11XX cards won't be out for some time, and even then it's not a great idea to buy the first card they release as they will refine them and fix bugs in the drivers.

1060 6GB is a great card.

That's the one I have in my HTPC.

I used it in my main rig for a bit when my 980Ti died. I was able to still play pretty intensive games at 1440p 60fps with medium-ish settings.

@Random_Matt: What's wrong with the Ryzen 5 1600? That's the CPU I'm aiming for. Good bang for the buck and its multicore performance is better than an i5 7600K and its good at video rendering.

I was originally thinking of converting my old build into a micro atx one but someone told it wouldn't be much of a good idea as an upgrade to even an FX 8350 would still bottleneck any new card I get with it. Nvidia's CEO did recently say if the GTX 1180 were to release tomorrow it would be somewhere between now and 2 months. Price is another factor I just realized. If the rumored GTX 1180 prices are true then the others would still be pretty expensive too.

How is the noise and temp on that card in your HTPC?

I was thinking Ryzen 1600 since the performance gap isn't that big between them, especially in gaming. 1080p and 1440p for most of my games and 4k for the old ones/low demanding ones and a few new ones. The GTX 1160's price is unknown but if its anything like the GTX 1180's rumored price it will cost more than a GTX 1060 did at launch. I'm going to hold out till at least the end of July to see if any new cards come out otherwise I'll just get a 1060 since if it doesn't come out by the end of summer or get a september release I'm better off with a GTX 1060 now since I at least will be able to play my games at good graphics and performance levels than to deprive myself of gaming for several months because of FOMO.

If I were I would get the Ryzen and hold out on the GPU. I know the nVidia CEO said that they won't be a new GPU in a while but I think he said that to clear the current inventory. I have 1060 6GB which is fine as I game at 1080P but can game at 1440P depending on the game and 4K is a bit pushing it. Since you have a 4K TV I would wait it out. How long can you wait? I have my money bet on nVidia releasing a new GPU. If you go back 10 years they have been releasing new GPU's every even number years. GTX 2xx series in 2008, GTX 4xx series in 2010, GTX 6xx series in 2012, GTX 9xx series in 2014 and GTX 10xx series in 2016. And I am willing to bet they will release 11xx series this year. Possibly before fall. So, I would hold out. I don't see that many new games for 2018 that would cause me to rush out and grab a GPU. Since you have a 4K TV the newer GPU's would definitely be better for 4K gaming.

@firedrakes: What are you talking about? You can pretty much make any game 4k, unless you're talking about assets and textures that are meant for 4k resolution. Even then even if its a low end game, 4K resolutions gives it that extra crisp feeling to me.

kind of . but still you cant say its a 4k game with out 4k assets. its like saying i film a movie and said its 4k.it was film in 2k. no its up-scaled 4k not real .4k now another thing a lot of people dont realize is they compress the hell out of textures. if you dont have to and can install it for the game. its like night and day. thats why xbox 360 games look so wash out for a long times. was the massive compression needed to fit on disc.

i do shot in 4k and the files sizes alone are massive. like 1 hour of video alone is 110gb. 1 hour of pictures(continues none film) is 50gb alone.

it boils down to this now. 4k is a buzz word to sell content now. does not care if almost all of said content is fake thru.

I would wait for the new cards. Don't make the same mistake I did. Against my better judgment I upgraded my 980 to a 980ti very late in the game just to turn around 6 months later to pick up a 1080 at launch......waste of money. I was impatient and should have just kept my 980 until the 1080s released. Not your exact situation but its almost July and the new cards are rumored to launch in a few months. Save up and get the newer cards, you would be happier in the long run.

@mobius_basic: I just saw the news of a Lenovo rep accidentally leaking the release date of the GTX 1180 it seems new cards will be coming within the next 3 months. I'll hold out for now and save up in case these cards cost a lot more than their predecessors MSRP.

@firedrakes: When you shoot in 4k isn't that just raw and uncompressed movies like star wars the last jedi is true 4k and that's only 56gb. You can mod skyrim to be true 4k and not upscaled aswell. While a lot especially older things aren't true 4k, it is becoming more and more true.

2 hour DCP (with 7.1 sound) is going to be 234 GB that the 4k standard with none compression. and sound included.

again the big issue is if the game is 4k. the data for it should be huge which is not. so some how this game dev came out of no where with magic software. again

again do you shot in 4k or edit in 4k. if not then you have zero clue on what you talking about.

do some basic ref for movies man. you way of.

@firedrakes: Every game benefits from 4K resolution (if it runs well). Obviously, games with higher fidelity assets will benefit the most as you will really appreciate the extra detail. However, 4K makes every game look better. The added definition makes scenes pop and easier to discern the detail in geometry.

ok 4k is good for 50 inch or above displays. what your talking about is un compress assets. but again i ask a basic question and no one answer it. my guess you follow digital foundry but dont understand what 4k acutel is. you dont do your own research

@firedrakes: 4K is not just for 50" or above. Both screen size and viewing distance factor into how much benefit you will get from added resolution. At the end of the day, 4K is a resolution that is independent of the assets. You do not need super high res textures or super detailed models to benefit from it. However, the higher the quality of assets, the bigger the reward when viewed in 4K.

dps = damage per second. I'm guessing you were referring to DPI (dots per inch) or pixel density which is calculated based on the resolution and screen size. The higher the DPI, the better. It is especially important with bigger screens where you can resolve the detail. Crazy DPI on a smart phone screen is just silly.

Buzzword or not, 4K makes a difference on all games and it refers to the image resolution of 2160p. I do not like it when companies misuse the term with fake 4K checkerboard and upscale bullshit. 4K is 2160p native resolution and nothing else.

2 hour DCP (with 7.1 sound) is going to be 234 GB that the 4k standard with none compression. and sound included. but what about compressed?

again the big issue is if the game is 4k. the data for it should be huge which is not. so some how this game dev came out of no where with magic software. again,

Its a mod for Skyrim, there around 50mb each per texture its like 100gb all up, just because you don't know how they work doesn't mean it doesn't work

again do you shot in 4k or edit in 4k. if not then you have zero clue on what you talking about. i do some editing in 4k, its how i make extra cash.

do some basic ref for movies man. you way of. what?

No, I don't do any video content. I can shoot at 4K with my smartphone, but it is compressed garbage.

There will always be a new gen (or more powerful revision) of cards on the way. Get what you need that does the job and don't worry about longevity.

If you wait, you'll always be waiting. Buy the upgrade now and have fun. You never know if the next-gen video card will be bottlenecked by your old CPU.

If you insist on 1440p or 1600p, The GTX 1070 (or AMD equivalent) is the best choice. The GTX 1060 is more of a 1080p card. I'm a 1080p guy. So, the 6GB 1060 is adequate enough.

@jun_aka_pekto: I understand that there always be something new on the way and that doesn't bother me, but if its right around the corner then it bothers me because its like plopping money down on a car only for a new and improved model costing the same MSRP to come out a week later, how could you not feel like you got screwed over? If this was about 3 months ago at fair prices I would've bought the GTX 1060 no question about it because I have no desire to wait that long plus waiting still cost you something even if its not money, it cost you time you could've spent playing games on high end hardware, essentially I'd see buying a GTX 1060 now as the price I'd pay for not having to wait to play games on high/ultra settings.

Based on what I've seen in 4k gaming videos with the GTX 1060 6GB, it fit most of my needs. I have a ton of last gen games I have yet to touch so I can definitely play those at 4k 60FPS+ no problem. From what I've seen the GTX 1060 can handle most of the best looking current games such as Hellblade and The Witcher 3 at 1440p max settings with at least framerates in the 40s.

@NoodleFighter: Wait for the GDDR6 GPUS to come out, 2440p will be dramatically better (from what I've heard). If you really want to upgrade and want to stay at 1080p, get a 960.

@jun_aka_pekto: Update: It's Amazon Prime day and I saw a Zotac GTX 1080 mini on sale for $469 and I hopped on it. I've definitely secured myself 4k gaming at max settings for at least 2 years and I definitely don't care if new cards were to come in the next few months. They'd have to be offering GTX 1080 performance at $300 or lower for me to feel like I missed out. I can't wait to play DOOM 2016 maxed out at 4k.

Nice enjoy your new GTX 1080, I highly doubt they will be offering 1080 type of performance under $400 anytime soon.

I have a Zotac 6GB 1060 Mini. It runs okay. No overheating issues since I bought it 1.5 years ago. But, a 1-fan GTX 1080? Let me know how it goes. For higher end cards, I usually go with dual fans.

It's good you bought the 1080. I thought you were going to stick with a 1440p monitor even though you have a 4k TV. Hence, the 1070. My bad on that.

@jun_aka_pekto: Actually it has two fans not one. I wouldn't get a single fan card of this caliber either unless I had a ton of fans inside the case or was going to liquid cool it. What case do you house your 1060 in and what CPU/heatsink? That plays a factor too since its ventilation and fan placement also factor in how well it will stay cool along with another part significant part that generates heat.

I wasn't gonna use a 1440p monitor, I was gonna use 1440p resolution on the 4k for the games that I can't run at 4k with framerates above 30fps.

I got all my parts except the mobo, HDD and RAM which I'm expecting later this week.
