Yes , they do , when they really don't have any right to ... don't have a right to revcieve presents or anything at all.Personally, I think athiests at Christmas should not get Christmas bonus , school holidays for Christmas etc.Because they don't believe in it.

Because the christmas that most people celebrate is a consumer/family holiday and not a religious one. Its become thanksgiving with lots of consumerism. I celebrate santa not jesus. Its the same with easter. I celebrate the chocolate egg laying bunny, not the revival of jesus. But jesus was a cool dude you should have a kickass b-day.

IMO...the definition of an atheist is someone who just does not care about any form of religion or religous belief. With that said, i also wonder y they celebrate christmas. But something alot of pple dont know or dont accept is that the "christmas celebration" BECAME a christian holiday from the Roman Empire. The actual christmas tree and thedecorations on the christmas tree (referring to the different colour orbs/balls)came from aCatholic tradition called Saturnalia.

Because everyone can enjoy the commercialism and materialism of Christmas. In a modern world Christmas is more just a way of big corporate companies of making lots of money. You call it x-mas. Well that is what we celebrate now. In the modern world there is no Christ in Christmas.

Because I like presents. The vast majority of people celebrate the commercial side of it just as much, if not more than the religious side of it. You all open your presents on the 25th, when in reality they should be opened on Boxing Day, like they used to do, so nobody really celebrates Christmas properly...

Im an Atheist and I celebrate Christmas, but thats okay. Christmas isnt even about the birth of Christ anymore, its a big freakin commercial freakout. I celebrate with my muslim extended family, who also celebrate whatever their holiday is alongside christmas, My Jewish freinds celebrate christmas and not hannuka, which, i will admit is a little strange, but yea, the point im trying to make is,Its not about Jesus anymore, its about buying gifts, and more importantly, FAMILY.

Because it originally celebrates the Winter Solstice which is universal. It's really because it has become a holiday time symbolizing time spent with friends and family, it really doesn't matter why people do it, its more important that they do it. Besides, you don't need to believe in God to celebrate a holiday. Most holidays have become so materialistic that I believe it'd be more religiouslycorrect to disassociate yourself from them.

Why do Christians get to celebrate the winter solstice, since a significant body of research places the date of His birth well outside of winter and Christmas was largely placed there to subsume existing pagan celebrations and observances?

Receiving a gift does not mean you celebrate jesus' birth, it means you just got a gift from your relative/friend and you don't want to be rude by forcing them to take it back.

When I give someone a present, I don't do it for any religous reason. It's just to be grateful.

You're acting as if atheists start praying on that holiday. :|

Christmas isn't about Jesus anymore. It's about the gifts you give and receive. I'm agnostic but if somebody wants to give me a gift on Christmas, I'll take it. I don't have to be a Christian to be around family and exchange gifts.

X-mas nowadays has NOTHING to do with religion, but it is more consumer oriented. It's all about buying the newest electronic for little Timmy than anything.

I think thats its sad that there is such a lack of respect for religion in todays world. But truth be told...so many things have happened in the past (as i pointed out in a previous post that got deletedfor useof a bad word.....sorry:) ) regarding religion that who knows what religion is right and what is wrong?

Its just sad.

Wrongo. Not sure if anyone has posted this before me, I haven't checked. Anyway; The celebration in December has been around since long before Jesus was born. It was just adapted by Christians. Anyway, my father and I are both athesits, yet we celebrate Xmas, it just has a different value for us. For us, it's a time to be with your family, celebrate the year that has just passed and prepare for the one around the corner. We don't think about religion at all during Xmas.

Wow. An awful lot of you are astoundingly ignorant to the fact thaat christmas is one huge piece of propaganda form Constantine. It was originally called Saturnalia and tied in with the winter solstice. this was pinched from the romans so that the transition between roman religion and christianity could be smoother. In fact, a lot of pagan ideas were included, such as halos.

This transition happened to try and avert a civil war, as Rome was rapidly fragmenting into two empires. Athiests, therefore, have just as much a right to celebrate this festival as any other group. Originaly Jesus' birth was celebrated in april.

Oi, moron saying "research" showed Jesus couldn't have been born at this time; How can this be possible as weonly have two accounts, clearly symbolic (Jesus is representing Israel during Matthews account).

Modern Christmas traditions have come to include the display of Nativity scenes, Holly and Christmas trees, the exchange of gifts and cards, and the arrival of Father Christmas or Santa Claus on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning. Popular Christmas themes include the promotion of goodwill and peace. get with the time. you people are so annoy at times. U.S. currency has the words "In God We Trust," on them, why do we still use them? we just do, cause we don't care. deal with it.

I am an athiest. and celebrate x-mas because it brings the family together, good food and preasents. the fact is my grandparnets are the religious types. you cant just say, "your an athiest, stay out in the cold and watch as we religious people eat nice food, open awesome preasents and play with fireworks(obviously not in the house).

but i think its mostly because the x-mas holiday hasnt become about the birth of jesus(at least for me it isnt) but about PRESENTS. present>xmas spirit. also the whole family thing.

Let's face it, how many supposed Christians celebrate Christmas with Jesus in mind? Even when I was CoE, I didn't give a toss about the Jesus aspect. I liked being with family and absorbing the atmosphere which, let's face it, can't be beaten. It's a tradition like Guy Fawkes Night is - not religious, but poignent none the less. Besides, I like the decorations :D

... Uh... no.

Winter Festivals'Christmas' is actually Winter Festivals celebrated by 'the pagans'. In order to convert more, Christianity combined the Mass of Christ (Christ's Mass) and the Yule or Winter Solstice.

It is the ultimate holiday glorifying consumerism, gluttony, and greed, as well as a time of tradition. One can enjoy these things as everyone else does in America without being religious.
