"Black" sounds harsher than "African American". It feels like a stronger word.
AFBrat77
so does "White"
I'd like to be called European-American please ;)
I'm sick of double-standard crap.
I'm not saying whether it's right or not. In fact, I find it laughable that people waste their time on issues like this. People complain about other people who are "politically correct" due to the fact that they curtail the use of certain words, and then proceed to do the same in reverse.
Black people originate from Afircaweezyfb
[QUOTE="CampOfDuty"]C'mon, America! Get your facts straight! Not all black people are African and not all Africans are black. Sheesh...Commander-GreeNot to mention that not all black people are American. What do you call a black person from the UK? African English? Here in the UK we just say they are black

hey I call them black or white, but if they want to call me European-American, thats good for a laugh.
The African-American thing is lame, and I've found most blacks I've met agree with me.
This is the correct answer.[QUOTE="Suzy_Q_Kazoo"][QUOTE="Vesica_Prime"]
Because of political correctness.
AFBrat77
Fine. I want to be called European - American from now on, not white!
Calling someone white is racist!
I didn't say it was necessary in any way, if you re-read the quote, I was merely agreeing with his answer. Personally, I just say black people. What about white people born and raised in Africa and then moved to the United States? What would you call them?Because of political correctness.

I don't get why the term "African-american" is always singled out and attracts so much controversy when people were describing themselves using terms like "Anglo-American" and "Irish-American" long before the term "African-American" entered the mainstream lexicon.
But to answer the question in the OP, a lot of black people like to describe themselves as "African-American" because it connotes their ethnic and cultural roots - something that the word "black" doesn't

Who the hell knows. It's stupid. Yes.
Why are threads like this always about the term "African-American"?
Why don't you guys have a problem with "Asian American"? Or "Italian American"?

I know, if a white person says the N word everybody starts freaking, but if a black person says it, nobody even notices it. It's hilarious though.

See my earlier post.
Probably because "African-American" is the more widely used term. Why are threads like this always about the term "African-American"?

[QUOTE="hokies1313"]Because all black people do originate from Africa in some for or another. And, sure, not all Africans are black, but the whites that settled in AFrica are called by other names (Boers, Rhodesians/White Zimbabweans, Afrikaners, etc) and those that are Arab, such as in the north, are called by their own section. Learn2Slavetrade though, All those blacks that come from the Caribbean all originally came from Africa.Vesica_Prime
How about Australian Aboriginals?
Exception to the rule. There are no other native black groups outside of Africa, besides the aboriginals, iirc.Ugh I hate political correctness, it villainies everyone who's apathetic towards something. :|Because of political correctness.
