I'm from Scandinavia and here everyone takes their shoes off, but in movies and on youtube people usually got their shoes on and it's almost always Americans? What's up with that.

Because we're so busy doing important tasks, always running in and out of the house, that taking them off would be counter-productive.

We're not comfortable with feet. Also, stop watching movies and YouTube if that's where you get your source of information.

It varies based on the household. Most of the time my shoes come off within two minutes of coming home unless I'm exercising (not going to run on the treadmill or do Insanity with bare feet) or just running in and out of the house. I have several friends who do the same.

Oh my feet are disgusting, you want my shoes on. Honestly if I have my sneakers on, I dont take them off because then I just have to put them back on. It actaully feels weird to me to take them off and just be in my sockes in someones house. Although now my wife makes me take my shoes off or I get the evil eye.

I think it makes them feel taller. It also helps build static electricity so they can have balloons stick to them and electrocute each other for a laugh.

Wearing shoes is much more comfortable to me than not wearing them. I always wear them inside if they aren't dirty. In fact I am wearing shoes right now.

Seems odd to me that wearing shoes is more comfortable to you than bare feet (on a clean home floor surface) but whatever.

Good idea, washing hands are only just slowing us down.

Apparently we/they do, though I still prefer taking my shoes off since I feel Im messing up their rug that way.

Well I wouldn't call Youtube a reliable source of information. I only have my shoes on inside when I workout, other than that, they're off my feet inside a home.

That's not true at all. I don't know anyone who wears their shoes in their homes, and the first thing you are supposed to do when you visit someone's house is take off your shoes (on the contrary, when I lived in England, you weren't supposed to take off your shoes until you were told to in someone's house, which was an odd change to get used to).

Yeah, it definitely makes you wonder. You watch all these american sitcoms and they all have shoes and their doors are never locked. Hard to say how it works IRL though, the reponses here gives you kinda mixed reponses, it still seems like it do happen "over there".

no, our streets our clean in America. And paved with gold. We really dont have to worry about tracking crap in. Just gold flakes, but those give carpet a nice sparkle.

If you're concerned about spreading germs and disease, you should wash your hands every time you come home. Your hands are far more a source of disease than your shoes.

I (nearly) always keep my shoes on when i'm inside because it's bothersome to take my shoes off.
Furtheremore I find the benifit of walking around without shoes minimal, socks are slippery and walking around in bare foot is a pain when it's cold.

I tend to just do whatever the inhabitants of the house are doing. If I go into someone's house and they take their shoes off, I will take mine off as well. If they keep theirs on, I will usually keep mine on. At home I always take my shoes off. It's a lot more comfortable. I've never thought of Americans as people who always keep their shoes on inside. I just thought that it was an individual preference. I know as many people who take them off as people who leave them on.

Pretty much. I love how in the movies when they're just relaxing watching TV, they're wearing shoes, jackets, hats, etc. Who wears all that in their house?

It's funny when I'm working and have to do an occupied apartment and they ask me to take off my shoes even though their house is disgusting. I laugh to myself and tell em I can't.

That's only in the movies. I know when I get home, my shoes are the first thing to be removed off my feet.
