Well?

as a genre of music it's awfully edgy to the point that it can hardly be taken seriously because of the loud, dark, hilariously angry riffs and lyrics that most people seem to grow out of after adolescence because of the embarrassment

when did you stop listening to metal, OT

Honestly, I don't even know what qualifies as Metal. I enjoy Metallica quite a bit and I've heard to them referred to as metal, but there are bands these days that are considered straight rock that are much heavier than them. So I couldn't even tell you.

I grew into metal and death metal then grew out of it.

I remember I used to love Linkin Park and Slipknot for some weird reason back in highschool. But then I fell they weren't heavy enough so I started listening to heavier metal and death metal. Devil Driver, Behemoth, Devourment, and others.

Then I went back to alternative, then back to hip-hop & rap, then got into Death Core, then I got into dubstep.

I still listen to dubstep. Probably the only genre that combines heavy beats and rhythms with a bit of hip-hop. Its heavy enough to make me head bang and yet chill enough to not go buck wild.

I started listening to metal when I was around 6 years old, I am 23 now and don't plan on it ever going away. Started out with Metallica, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Slayer. All because I heard Ride the Lightning by Metallica when my uncle put in the cassette tape. That song changed my life.

I listen to a bunch of other types of music as well such as English Folk, Punk, Reggae and Progressive Rock.

At 23 I went to my last metal concert which was Megadeth. I listened to it less and less, finally quit around 27. I have been listening to classical as well since I was 17 and that's pretty much what I listen to now.

Been a fan since i was a kid and still listening decades later. In fact most of the styles of music I like I never grew out of except hip hop. I was really into it in my mid teens but by the end of high school I was completely bored with it, still am. Lately I've been listening to a lot of old punk instead of metal.

Once I got a girlfriend/fiancee. Most women I had a relationship with tended to have more mainstream tastes. Plus , one advice my dad gave was I could stray a bit away from the mainstream. But, don't stray too far.

I enjoy a little bit of metal here and there, but it's a pretty sparse part of my listening time as it has rarely appealed to me. I honestly can't believe that I'm seeing this thread as it seems like this place has been historically filled with metal heads.

Eh, I liked Murmaider better. Funny thing is that I never could get into metal until I saw Batmetal which introduced me to dethklok. The only metal I've listened to has been Dethklok or Metallica.

I started listening to extreme metal when I was 24. Only gotten more involved with the genre ever since.

The only genre of music I can really not stand is country. But not Johnny Cash country, that's good country. This modern country with the "twang" and the lyrics about trucks and farms and shit.

I do laugh when people piss and moan about metal. Its far more musical than most popular music these days. And most of the musicians have insane levels of talent behind them.

That said, I've been really getting into The Tea Party recently. Never really knew who they were, but I've heard a bunch of their songs before for years on the radio. Fantastic band that really channels Led Zeppelin, The Doors and the "experimental" Beatles. I love the lead singers voice too.

2008. Then the genre went downhill from there.

Hiphop started to get good again and then went downhill with TrapHop. Now I'm very frustrated that I can't find a good genre that is popular.

Why do you need to listen to popular music?

And what subgenres of metal did you listen to?

Well, most popular music is on the radio. When I don't have a playlist with me I listen to that. It's also easier to find mainstream music.

As for mental subgenres, it was mostly alternative heavy/rock mix. Music from A7X would be an example.

@GazaAli: What exactly about the music or ethos of this genre doesn't sit well with you?

Seeing how I dislike 95% of metal music out there, I think I might actually lead you to something worth listening to in this genre.

It's more accurate to say I grew into it - I was a "classy" kid that thought metal was meathead music during most of high school, until I removed the massive stick up my ass and learned what fun was.

Same thing goes for a lot of genres, tho.

Metal is a tricky genre. Most of it is garbage. Anything with screaming or growling vocals is an automatic no go for me. That being said, I do enjoy Metallica, Dream Theater, Iron Maiden, Megadeth and some Pantera. The first 3 are 3 of my favorite bands. I grew out of listening to mainstream rap as a kid and into rock and metal.

I don't think the power metal I listen to fits into the "awfully edgy to the point that it can hardly be taken seriously because of the loud, dark, hilariously angry riffs and lyrics" category you lumped all metal into.

I never did grow out of it. My preference is the more melodic type such as Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Mettalica, and Judas Priest. I never did care for the more guttural type like Slayer or Slipknot.

Used to love Gojira and Pantera too, but I ended up getting into heavier stuff.

Some bands I still love though, probably will never stop loving:

Funny how I can hop from hip-hop and rap into death metal and metal, but now I am mostly and exclusively dubstep.
