A lot of people, particularly Americans, say that the U.S. is the greatest country on Earth. Do you agree or disagree with this statement? I believe that The United States is overrated, and that The United Kingdom is a better country. The following are my reasons:

  • College education is less expensive in the U.K. and is highly subsidized, unlike in the United States where tuition prices can exceed $40,000 per year, and where most colleges are privatized. Why should something so necessary be private and expensive, and subsequently unattainable or impractically attainable for most people?
  • Medical Coverage is highly subsidized in the U.K. In fact, as far as I know, EVERY U.K. Citizen has medical coverage. On the other hand, in the U.S., unless a person has medical coverage, they can wind up paying tens of thousands of dollars on medical bills. What a shame. You might be thinking "But what about Medicaid and Medicare?" As far as I know, the public health insurance companies under these two systems can deny coverage for certain medical needs (certain surgeries because they're too expensive or are considered cosmetic), whereas in the U.K. this is less likely or not likely to happen.
  • The United States' debt is a wopping $15 trillion dollars, which is 102% of its GDP, while that of the U.K. is £1,278.2 billion, which is 85% of its GDP.
  • The U.K. doesn't have a host of its millitary personnel stationed in other countries indefinitely and doesn't have a habit of sticking its nose in the business of other countries.
  • The U.S.'s gun laws are too lax. Every citizen should not have the right to a firearm; it simply leads to too many gun-assaults and homicides. Furthermore, the U.S.'s police force uses guns, which is why there are always cases in which police use excessive (fatal) force against suspects when they do not have to. On the other hand, in the U.K., gun laws are more strict and most police officers do not use guns (yet they are very effective at their job).
  • Skins

Anyhow, what are your thoughts? Discuss. By the way, I'm an American citizen.

While I think that our healthcare and education system is superior, I do think we lack the opportunities career wise which are far more readily available in the U.S.

Also we don't have mountain dew. Not the proper stuff anyway. Hmpff.

Thanks for the heads-up. I'm going to edit the OP to include U.K.'s ban on guns and the fact that most of its police force doesn''t use guns, unlike here in the U.S..

I'm aware that the U.K. has military personnel stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan, and perhaps a few other countries, but I doubt it's as many as the United States. Furthermore, those in Iraq and Afghanistan are in those two countries because the U.S. duped the U.K. into providing assistance, so it's the U.S.'s fault. Furthermore, what recent wars has the U.K. started recently?

I would imagine that the cost of living is low enough such that the high tax rate does not affect one's ability to live life confortably, unlike here in the States where people are struggling to get by.

Well, actually there are UK military bases around Europe - Italy, France, etc and somewhere else in the world. There are some in the US, and I've seen some Royal Air Force fighter jets flying in the US airspace.

You don't need to assume.

I wouldn't say the list is a million miles off. He is correct about the armed forces stationed abroad with the exception of Afghanistan and Iraq and on the whole British troops have now left Iraq. The effectiveness of our police force is subjective however. While I think it's pretty efficient others may disagree, particularly those in the north what with the large number of gun related incidents near Manchester in recent years.

Having bases in friendly countries I don't really think counts. We're not in Italy against the Italians wishes. Plus there are foreign armed services stationed in the UK too.

Gas in the UK runs about $9 gallon. That would be more than double what we pay in the US. It might even be more now compared to what it was when I was over there.

Saying United States is the greatest country in the world is kind of a biased statement. Believing greatest country in the world without maintaining it have led to aging infrastructure and lowest education rating among industrial nations. United States does have the strongest military in the world, there havent been a major war in 70 years. Because of worldwide stability, economies in major countries have grown. UK and other countries are riding along on the back of the US military, giving them the opportunity to pay for social systems. It would be fair if United States end up charging EU and UK $50 billion a year to help maintain the Navy to protect the world's waterways.
