So now for restaurantsto include toys in kids meals such as happy meals they need to meet these requirements.

To be allowed to offer an incentive -- like a toy, game or ticket -- with a children's meal,a restaurant:

  • Must make sure the meal had no more than 600 calories and no more than 640 milligrams of salt.
  • Fat makes up 35% or less of the total calories. Exceptions are egg, low-fat or reduced-fat cheese, peanut butter and nuts. Saturated fat can only comprise 10% of the total calories and trans fat only 0.5 grams.
  • Must provide a half cup of fruits and a half cup of vegetables in each meal. Breakfast meals must have a half cup of fruit.

To me this sounds like an excellent move and I hope it spreads. Yes you can make they argument that the parents should be taking responsibility, but the problem is, as shown by rising obesity rates in children throughout the country, that they don't take said responsibility.oh and just for funsies

This is so idiotic. No shock it comes from Frisco. How about you let the parents decide what their kid can or can't have and how many calories it can have. A Toy should have nothing to do with it.

This is pathetic and I am 100 percent against this. Government trying to tell businesses what they can have in their meals. It is a bunch of BS. Parents should be responsible for this and not some legislation. If a parent can't be responsible than they shoulden't have a kid.

Absurdity of this legislation is the first thing that comes to mind, but I can't say that I care much.

It's not really going to change much. You can get a cheeseburger and small fries in there there for under 600 calories.

It was not poisonous to begin with. In moderation McDonald's food is perfectly fine. If parents can't keep their kids eating it in moderation than that is on the parents and no one else. People want this whole country to turn into a nanny state its disgusting

Again, it's CA and it's SF. It doesn't have to make sense. It just has to to conflict with one's rights.

I understand the requirements to reduce the fat and sodium percentage, but what I don't get it, is why are they mandating that the happy meals have fruit/veggies in them? What gives them the right to do that?

This is pathetic and I am 100 percent against this. Government trying to tell businesses what they can have in their meals. It is a bunch of BS. Parents should be responsible for this and not some legislation. If a parent can't be responsible than they shoulden't have a kid.

testfactor888

but parents have been proven to be irresponsible. With over 40% of Americans obese, and an even higher number of minors reaching obese levels, parents have, in my opinion, lost the right to treat their kids to fast food.

When parents can establish good eating habits for their kids and family, and the obesity epidemic goes down a significant amount, then we reserve the right to call this legislation bullcrap.

I say this as a fat, former resident of the SF Bay Area.

At the least, this will prove to be an insightful experiment.

rising costs of healthcare have a whole lot to do with it.

edit also there are a fair number of jobs that a person needs to be in decent shape to accomplish

Then raise the cost of insurance for the obese and don't hire someone that is too fat to do the job required of them. Problem solved.

This is pathetic and I am 100 percent against this. Government trying to tell businesses what they can have in their meals. It is a bunch of BS. Parents should be responsible for this and not some legislation. If a parent can't be responsible than they shoulden't have a kid.

but parents have been proven to be irresponsible.

It doesn't matter if a kid is fat or skinny its his freedom to eat what he wants. Its the parents freedom to feed their kids what they want. The government has no place in the middle of it. Stop trying to force this nanny state on people

theyre not telling them what to eat

theyre simply limiting the unhealthy options :P A parent can still get their kid a big mac, large fries, and a McFlurry if they want. But theyre also making a healthy option A.) available, and B.) appealing to kids, as it has a toy.

You conspiracy theorists, you people that fear big brother, really crack me up sometimes. You think the government is coming in and trying to change your life; this is a god damn happy meal, and theyre doing the right thing.

Like I said, the government is not telling any individual what to eat, how to eat, and how to live. Theyre telling a corporation that is partially responsible for the American obesity epidemic to start offering healthier meals aimed at children.

It is no different the government mandate telling our educational system what to offer for school lunches, but I dont hear you complaining about that.
