i just saw this on the news... honestly i was shocked, he was in coma since the last 9 months after suffering severe head injuries since last year's suzuka grand prix...he was a very talented F1 driver and was driving for marussia.. he was also selected for the ferrari young drivers programme... my condolences to his family and RIP ;((

This belongs in sports discussion, and he wasn't selected for the Ferrari young driver program, he was a graduate of the program.

I think the thread is fine in OT; we're not discussing the sport; the thread is about him passing; the fact he was an F1 driver is not all that relevant.

Now if the thread was discussing the dangers of F1 racing then yes, Sports Bar.

Didn`t know about the crash until i saw the news half an hour ago. I was disgusted by the person responsible on the news who kept showing his tragic crash over & over again, no respect at all.

May he rest in peace.

Never heard of him (guess because I don't follow sports on TV including racecars) but I am still sad to hear about his passing. :( Sucks how dangerous racing can still be. Rest in peace to him. :(

@dagxton: I know but the main reason for the thread is not why he passed away but that he did. It's hard to justify an RIP thread on a sports forum.

this is a shame and he was very talented and while it is less common now than it used to be it is still a high risk sport.

and if you don't know anything about the man or the sport why bother posting?

Its not that high-risk anymore, its been 20 years since the last death, and no I'm not counting Massa's head injury where he couldn't race for a few GP's.

I said high risk and does not necessarily mean death although that is definitely a risk.

while it is true there are advances in technology and safety features the risk factor is one of the reasons many of these men and women become drivers.

Maria de Villota lost an eye in an accident not long ago and she was no novice. She was well respected and the daughter of one of the greats......eventually killed herself due to depression which is another occupational hazard and has happened to others when they could no longer compete.

Robert Kubika is still recovering from the wreck he had just 4 years ago.

accidents are not infrequent .........however probably not as common as in NASCAR though because these are not confederate flag waving cowboys who have been promoted from Banger Racing (Demolition Derby)

Maria was a novice, if I remember correctly she was testing Marussia's F1 car in a straight line and braking, she lost control when the anti-stall system kicked in. She wasn't told about the system, but if she was a professional, she would have known about it anyway. She lost an eye, its obvious you cant get race license with a medical condition, so I don't see how depression is related in any way to racing.

Robert Kubica is fine, he broke an arm/leg, he probably doesn't care because he is still racing and doing what he loves.

I would say indycar (the American F1 where they race on ovals) is more dangerous than Nascar, any minor bump and the car goes airborn because of the flat underside, then once its flipped over, it becomes an airplane essentially because the wings/winglets are flipped over.

Robert Kubica had his arm nearly severed that is not the same as a broken arm, also a concussion. Despite what he claims Robert will probably never be quite the same as before, I've had similar injuries in auto wrecks and while your body can repair to an extent it does not come back to 100%.

the depression was related to no longer being able to race and Maria was from a racing family and grew up in the industry so was never what you could call a novice.

NASCAR might be considered a training ground for Forumula 1 in the way quarter midgets are trainers for NASCAR

but running F1 on a short oval like Daytona ...pffft.,,,,,,,,that is beyond dangerous it is idiotic
