I think incredible or revolutionary would describe it. James Cameron said he'd change the way we watch movies and I fully believe he just may.
It had to be a cliche story... thats what most people don't understand who don't like it. Would you really risk establishing a technological feat on a completely new story? I don't think so. You have to go with well established story. It's amazing. Sure the story is cliche if you step back and grossly summarize the plot, but there is a hell of a lot more to this movie than just CGI.

While I completely love the movie, story and all, even I have to admit that he could have put a little more complexity into the actual plot. He created a very realised and believable world so that combined with the incredible effects just served to make the slightly weaker plot look that much weaker. All in all still a fantastic movie though.
Every time I see you talk about this film, you seem to like it slightly more than you did before. Like when you first voiced your opinion over it, you just said it was an "ok" film. Now it's a "pretty good film". How much longer before you're saying "it was a pretty awesome film"? :P I really want to see it again. It's one of those films I could see myself watching multiple times. It's a pretty good film, but there have been much better films this year.

O_O Are you sure you went to the right movie?Yeah man. I loved the film personally, but my ass was so sore afterwards...

Even if the story is cliche, its surprisingly engrossing and seeing as not a single person left the cinema for the whole three hours. I dont think I was the only one who was drawn into it :P
And the visuals are awesome.
I agree completely with this. The story isn't unique, but it's still a good movie and a hell of a thrill.Even if the story is cliche, its surprisingly engrossing and seeing as not a single person left the cinema for the whole three hours. I dont think I was the only one who was drawn into it :P

Thinking back on it I like it a bit more than I first thought. I will be watching it again too, but probably not for a while. I got a lot to watch first since I am getting more of the academy DVD's. I got Crazy Heart, White ribbon, broken embraces, and the last station. I have seen white ribbon, and broken embraces before I want to watch them again. I will watch Avatar again soon though, then I will write a proper review of it. Right now though it stands as a 7 out 10, maybe a 7.5 at most.
A good film? Not particularly if a script is anything to go by. The visuals are amazing and it'll win an Oscar for them definitely. Well deserved. However, its as though 9 and a half years have been spent on the visuals and about 6 months on the script. It "borrows" from so many other films. Every cliche is in there. The dialogue is largely wooden and the characters are very 1 dimensional. Its very predictable and formulaic. If it were any other film people wouldn't hold it in such high esteem.
People say 'oh but the script doesn't matter'. You actually enjoy being able to guess every plot point and watching the same stories over and over again?
These people must sit there with their jaws open, waiting for the flies to buzz in.
I can't believe some say its going to win Best Picture.
I wonder how people would have reacted if Michael Bay made Transformers 2 with those sort of visuals. I really doubt they would have held the same praise.
Definitely not. CGI and effects, can't make up for the cliche story (that a twelve year oldcould of written).
If I wanted to see fancy CGI, I'd play a video game, at least then I'd actually have fun.

If you're suggesting that better visuals would have brought Transformers 2 up to the same level as Avatar, not a chance in hell (what was wrong with the VFX in Transformers 2 anyways?).
CGI alone is not why Avatar is receiving so much praise. Whether or not Avatar's story was completely original, in my opinion, does not really matter. Transformers 2 was all about big robots and stuff going boom. Avatar had fantastic visuals, but it also had a storyline that was effective and a romance that was believable.

The point I was making was that people are saying 'the story doesn't matter in Avatar, its about the visuals'. Well what is TF2 had those visuals? Would they have said the same thing? No they wouldn't have.
Its a double standard.
The storyline was only effective in being an excuse to show those visuals in Avatar.
I can't think of how Cameron, in the time he had to make this, could have been any lazier with his narrative. It might be effective and entertaining for you, but when you really think about the story and how numbingly formulaic it is, it doesn't stand up.
Most people would agree with you and say its effective because its easy to sit through and not think too hard about it. Its probably what they're used to, in terms of seeing these sort of Hollywood-structured films, rather than things that are more challenging.

I dont think Cameron was lazy with the script at all. It has all of the ****c James Cameron touches in it. The same formula in which he explains to you some kind of technology or something at the beginning of the film (for example, how the ship sank in Titanic, or the breathing water in The Abyss) and it is employed in some kind of action sequence later in the film. It is much better written than you might think. James Cameron wanted to make the movie this way.
Also, the story, the dialogue, the characters and most of Transformers 2 was absolute cr@p. Avatar has a good story, whether it is similar to other stories or not. It doesnt change the fact that it is a good story with good and well-developed characters.
