My birthday is coming up in two months. I would:
- Get rid of all my addictions.
- Write and speak more.
- Do home bodybuilding.
- Learn investment.
- Read old Russian novels.

I currently intend to make my next career as a financial advisor and I have several certifications I'm looking to get, so that's my answer. Get certs and step into a new career.
I am so beyond done with IT support. Beyond that, travel to Italy is also a goal. My wife wants to see her family there.
This year, is it like a "free" year where I don't have to work? Are there budgetary restraints?
Well, in either case, I'd spend it working out and losing weight. I've lost 160+ lb so far and I still have a ways to go, and I think I could get that done in a year.
I'd hire a trainer, build out my garage gym a bit, and work out 4+ days per week.
I'd also learn Spanish (or polish up on my French) and then go travel to Mexico, Spain (or France) and immerse myself there for a few months.
Well, I've already quit the weed and nicotine recently, and I've just committed myself to a position with a low ceiling for the next year at work, so if it's starting now, I'd be kind of screwed.
Yeesh, I can't even quit gaming because I've barely done that the last decade. Maybe get really fit? Or stop wasting time on the internet and relocate somewhere hot, where I'd probably feel much healthier than I do here.
@mrbojangles25: Great job with the weight loss man, I've lost nearly 150 myself and still have a ways to go to be where I'd like to get. I'll probably never be in the best shape of my life like I once was, but at that point I was on another level.. lol.
Keep it up bro, you got this. It's like I always tell people with anything trying in life, 1 step at a time and do my tell yourself you can't, tell yourself you choose not to. It sounds petty, but that one line has helped me a LOT.
@plasticpie: Why not go for it man? The only person stopping you from your dreams is you. I'm not saying this as a put down at all either, I'm saying it from a good spot. I had to learn that the hard way. After years of putting things off and feeling sorry for myself I had enough and just simply told myself I was doing it for me and the haters can hate. You only get one chance, so go out with a bang man.

I tried to go that path too. In fact, I have a few financial certificates and a degree in business management from a top university. I would recommend you to stick to the computing world as they pay more. Learn programming instead.

Go vegan like me, and eat a log of fibber, you will lose a lot of weight.

Hopefully, I will realise my goals, because all the addictions of last year were really terrible.
Probably work out for a year and improve my physique as I never been able to have time to do so. Like get my ideal weight down and just feel better about how I look in the mirror.
I am already using every year to improve myself.
If you mean, a year without work and being able to support myself? I guess i would just start my own company or get some certification in data analysis which i am already pursuing but slowly.
But you don't need gap year for that, i have been learning languages, data analysis, guitar and working out for years now, while working and recently married.
What you need is order (in time and space). Unless you have several kids or something else that really uses your time and you can't control.
I would start off by asking what you mean if you were given a year? You have many years in your life, though I understand it’s not guaranteed as we could die at any moment that we cannot foresee, but you could always improve your life now.
As for myself, it would certainly be addiction. I’m battling porn. Exposed at 7-8 by a relative, then sexual abuse by a relative around 10-12. I’ve had freedom from porn for a good 2 and a half years, but then it reared it’s ugly head again. It’s a real battle. Causes high anxiety, depression, and a whole host of emotions whenever I fall. Ugh.
Definitely try to make a career change. I don't have a "free year", though. In reality I'd have to keep my current job at first, just working half time. I saved up some money and I could always get back to full time, or even extra time, so I feel pretty secure.
Also, eat more veggies and drink less coffee.

Programming's never been something I've been even remotely competent at unfortunately. It's too bad, it seems like a cool profession if you can understand what you're doing.
@Serraph105: yeah I've always wanted to learn a skill like that, something that could be a good hobby, but also productive. Programming, electronics, welding...the ability to basically do your own work, while still sort of having fun with it.
I just watched a video where I guy built his own smoker for BBQ, lots of welding but the final result was built just the way he wanted it.
