Um.... the same way you avoid getting fat anywhere else? It's called self-control. People are supposed to have it. In fact, I would say that not having it is a pretty clear sign of a serious mental deficiency.

While it is true that the restaurants in the US offer unhealthy food there is no one stopping you from going to the grocery store. US grocery stores have one thing in common, all the junkfood are in the middle of the store along the isles so don't even bother to look over there if you only want healthy food.

Restaurants also offer healthy food......don't blame the restaurant if you continually choose the unhealthy food.
Well one thing you could try is to buy food at the supermarket. You just get the basic ingredients, the same ingredients that they have in food throughout the world. Then you prepare it any way you want.

Welcome to the USofA. Explore, endulge, enjoy. There's plenty of food and activities to choose from. So becoming obese or anorexic are just some of the privileges/choices you'll have during your stay. Choose wisely...

Its not just the junk food though. Unfortunatly most of the other things in the grocery store are bad for you as well even when they are labeled or seen as being good for you. Even so called fresh fish and other meats usually contains things like Sodium Nitrate which is very bad for your metabolism and immune system. The only way to even try and avoid this is by seeking out locally raised fresh meat with no additives or preservatives and these foods usually come at a luxury price because just like everything else in this country, food is a corporate money machine. Some of the bad things in our foods no not even need to be disclosed to the public due to corporate lobbying. And often times, anything labeled low fat or fat free is actually just as bad if not worse for you than junk food.
Just eat the same as you always have. Jeeze, it isn't that difficult to choose to not enter a fast food joint

Its not really that simple since many foods in other countries are not poisoned like American foods are. People think that just because they avoid fast good, they are going to be healthy.
