As title says.

Not trying to sound like a prude here, but personally... I hate them.

Typically sex scenes bring nothing of real value to the story itself. I mean, is it too much to ask for them just to imply the act, instead of wasting time? There's also the matter of how awkward these sex scenes can get. The show Dexter comes to mind when saying this. I couldn't help but cringe at some of those scenes in that show, and I was alone while watching them too. Finally, let's be honest here, if I really wanted to watch sex I'll just go online and look up some porn or something. I don't need my TV shows or movies to help get me off, you know what I'm sayin'?

So, I'm curious to know, how does everyone else feel about the topic?

They should definitely be relevant to the story if they are included. Sometimes it gets on my nerves when I watch, for example an HBO show, and they thrown in a sex scenes just for ratings. I'm watching said show or movie for it's content, story, acting, action etc. If something is included (not only sex) that isn't necessary to the story then it usually irks me.

You can have all the horrifying, graphic, gory violence you want in a PG-13 movie. But by God don't ever show a nipple

not every sex scene should be left ilmplied. i hate it when people say" if i wanted sex i'd look up porn online". personally i find sex scenes in movies way more stimulating than that of porns simply because they are set on a detailed dramatic structure which makes the whole thing way more real than sex in pornography. this is what some porns clumsily try to achieve with their stupid plots and dialogues and moslty turn out to be even more dull than they should have been.

i have to agree that it is kinda silly at this point to include them.

in the past it was one of the few socially acceptable ways to titillate people and get away with it for "artistic license" but now if you want to see sex you can see anything you want to at the click of a mouse.

sex scenes are basically obsolete.

Most of the ones I've seen are gratuitous, but I don't write them off altogether. It all depends on the context of the situation.

I don't see any issue with them. They made the R-rating for a reason.

As for sex having any meaning in a film, sure, it'd be find and dandy and all, though in real life sex isn't always meaningful, so sex not being rleevant to the plot also isn't that big an issue, assuming that 80% of the film isn't just meaningless sex or something (in which case it'd become a porno).

If they're quick and to the point that the two characters are now *******, I don't mind it.  Long drawn out sex scenes just leave me saying "OK, get on with it!"

As long as their not included just for the sake of them being there, and the film doesnt turn into a softcore porno, then im fine with them. I guess I wont get too mad if it turns into a soft core porno as well.

I've accepted that HBO has a "15% of each episode must be nudity" clause. I don't really mind, as long as it doesn't drag on.

I like it. Most of the time it's just a realistic depiction of life. My cousin hates it, but I simply find it adequate.

I feel like if it is done right, then it's fine. I'm gonna use game of thrones for example. There are certain sex scenes that actually enhance the story and others that are irrelevant.

MINOR SPOILERS I GUESS:

When daenyris and drago do it the first time and the second time, it really helped characterize their relationship. However, the lesbian scene where the maid helps her "find out" how to be good at sex was pretty useless. She could have easily just told her.

The scene where theon is tortured and had sex with (though sort of unneedlessly long), it served a purpose when it was interrupted by his captor to show how cruel the captor can be (who's name i forget but will always bethat guy from the show "misfits" to me)

however, other scenes like some of the brothel scenes with the mayor from the wire, seemed kind of pointless.

I usually don't like them because they're boring and bring nothing to the story generally. A great example of them done right is in Breaking Bad. They really show how Walt changed. About half of Mad Men's are good too but they generally go on too long in my opinion. In a show with as much stuff to get through like Mad Men I hate when they spend 30 seconds too long on a sex scene.

I watched some Nip Tuck years ago to see what all fuss was about. A lot of racy scenes which came out of nowhere and were clearly there just for ratings. A lot of these shows are like that nowadays. It's one of the reason I find myself watching reruns of the old stuff.

Yeah there's a lot but not every episode has one. But just from the ones recently the one where he's with the doctor's wife and is all controlling and when he gets caught by Sally are both hugely important. Even the one with Betty was important because it showed that she had moved on.

It took me until the second season to see how shitty the show was. The season one finale was freaking amazing though, I was laughing for like 5 minutes after you see the baby.

Considering they only exist to appease and attract young crowds and teenage boys - I'd say they're rather pointless and unsubstantial. Implication is all that's needed, and anything further is just gratuitous and exploiting the actor's looks. Has a sex scene ever made a movie better? I can't think of a single case (unless the sex scene was the only thing worthwhile in the film...)

Actions during sex can show character development. For example the ending of the first episode of breaking bad or Don when he makes Sylvia stay in the room that one episode. Just because they're rarely used well doesn't mean that all of them are worthless.

I would consider Breaking Bad's sex scenes to be implied - they are always extremely brief and show only what's relevant to the story.

I'm not against them in principle, but I find they can take you out of the story.

I hate when it's all in your face explicit, but I also hate when they go to a lot of trouble to frame things carefully and shoot around bits.

Depends. Usually it just brings the story to a halt. Sometimes it works, though. Like in The Terminator.

.. Yep.. Watching a person getting their head split open, gunned down, hanged, cut in half.. A Ok! But don't you dare show any kind of nudity or intimiate scenes!
