Yes because people shouldn't be allowed to change their opinions on issues. That's the mark of a good thinker, who won't change their opinion no matter what they're presented with.

Obama and Hillary are politicians and lawyers

So are you really surprised that they turn in the direction the public opinion is.

What politician doesn't cater their opinion on social issues to their voting base? You think all of these Republicans really give a crap who marries whom? Probably not...they're just pandering to their base.

A democratic republic is supposed to reflect the will of the voters.

This. It's not just the Democrats but also Republicans who are changing their political and social viewpoints. People change their views all the time in the face of new evidence. This thread is bonkers.

I didn't know it was a bad thing to change your opinion over time?

I'd see a hypocrite as someone who says they support same sex marriage and then turns around and refuses to attend one. If you change your policy on things, I don't see that as being a hypocrite as much as just being a decent human being. Unless you are telling me your opinions of EVERYTHING has been the same your entire life.

I guess it's impossible for people to change their opinions? Most people I know would be hardcore against gay marriage during the 80's, but since times and tolerance have changed here in the U.S., most people are for or just don't care. With the exception for a few Right Wingers.

Most politicians are hypocrites about various issues (hell most people are hypocrites), but both Hillary and Obama are effective at accomplishing goals that they set for themselves and that's more important to me on a personal level.

The big difference between the two on marriage equality is that Obama did a 360 where as Hillary did (to the best of my knowledge) only did a 180. Most of the country did a 180 and I don't think that makes everyone who did so a hypocrite.

On the point about them being incredibly populist, I can only agree however.

I'd first have to believe what they were saying, like Obama saying he's Christian when he's running and doesn't go to church in the off season. Sounds like they're just pandering to those on the sociopolitical fence. Thing is, we can all certainly know they're not going to take measures in reversing the effect of the recent SCOTUS decision, whereas we know exactly who will be trying to undermine the SCOTUS ruling for years to come like it's Roe v Wade.

@magicalclick: Ultimately yes, while it's true Obama is a hypocrite on this issue he still ended DADT, and stopped allowing the use of DOMA while pretending to be against marriage equality. Lying sure, but being an ally towards the lgbt community while lying.

Even if their new stance on gay marriage is fake, they would hardly be the first 2 politicians to lie to remain relevant or favorable in the eye of the public. Who knows, they could have been lying when they first said they were against it. This is politics, very little is exactly as it seems and lying is a core element of the job.

This, to a degree. I mean, this is absolutely critical to a good leader. That being said, it's often difficult to discern this from pandering, and I don't have much of a stomach for that.

I remember when Republicans were against:

Inter-racial marriage. They are all for it now, and some have them (Jeb Bush).

Women's suffrage. They wouldn't dare be against it now.

Social Security and Medicare. When is the last time you have heard a Republican politician propose doing away with Social Security or Medicare? They wouldn't dare. The rubes who vote for them love socialism, for themselves at least.

They did the same thing with all the above. After 10 years, they won't dare oppose it, then Americans will finally get the public insurer option they should have had from the beginning.

The rubes who vote for them love socialism, for themselves at least.

they've been doing their best with Obama care though

They did the same thing with all the above. After 10 years, they won't dare oppose it, then Americans will finally get the public insurer option they should have had from the beginning.

Well now since the supreme court said it's legal, they don't have shit to go with. I can not for the life of me get why the political system is what it is right now

Because the stupid half of the country hasn't yet realized that theocracy is bad, treating people like second class citizens is wrong, and that voting for the interests of the wealthy and big business is contrary to their own interests only harms them.

Yet still half vote for these people and Hillary won't be any better either. Someone like Warren or Sanders should win

Technically speaking 100% of people are hypocrites.

Well even if that is true, I'm sure a certain percentage wish they weren't hypocrites, and do want to claim they did something hypocritical without realizing, and say that it was not their intention.
