Good luck bro'.......I spent 4 years in the U.S. Air Force (active duty), trained in Lackland, Texas, and was stationed in England and Warner Robbins, Georgia.

Get ready for basic training, work out at the gym, run laps, and toughen yourself up mentally to get past that part.

I heard they are easier on recruits these days though.

Good luck.

BTW I thought the Army refers to it as basic combat training and bootcamp was for the Marines.

I live a few hours north of Benning. I was a Marine years ago and being an Air Force brat, I have lived coast to coast and lots of places in between. I was a rotorhead while I was in.

The only difference I know of between basic training for Marines and soldiers is the fact that Marines have drill instructors while the Army has drill sergeants.

Yea try to stay anonymous as possible and don't ever volunteer for anything! You just gotta make sure your in top shape when you go to airborne and you'll sail right through. The toughest part is the fact you'll be running 10 miles a day.

I was at Benning before going to FayetteNam North Carolina. I shipped out in June so my basic hit right in the middle of summer when it was 110 in the shade and round the clock 90% humidity.

Good luck. Columbus sucks really really bad. I would probably kill myself if i had to live there again. Just something strangely depressing about just passing through there. This was going on 10 years ago though so i'm not sure what its like now.

Even with all that considered, basic and really the entire process was one of the most fun things i have ever done. Its the whole "hurry up and wait" crap that comes afterwards that i hated.

You can excell without sticking out ( DO NOT try to stick out ). Try to be the absolute best at what you are doing while still remaining a nobody.

When you got to Benning, first you'll go to this placed called "30th AG," that is the 30th Adjutant General Battalion. It's where everyone in the Infantry Training Brigade goes before they ship to Basic. If you're lucky, you'll only be there a week. It sucks. It's kinda like a minimum security prison; you don't do anything, but you're not really allowed to do anything either.

Hmm...advice for Basic... Very early on, you'll be introduced to the concept of the "uniform." No, I don't mean like fatigues versus dress blues. "Uniform" is the word used to describe all the equipment you're supposed to have on you, in all its various combinations. Always make sure you're in the correct uniform. If you're suppose to be in fatigues, with a canteen in your right cargo pocket and your black leather gloves in yourother, have that stuff. Don't be that one guy who forgot it and makes everyone do pushups.

The same thing they do in any other job: Fire you.

Thread creator: That's another thing. If you decide this isn't for you, walk into the company commander's office and say "I refuse to train." You'll get harassed, but in a short time, they'll sign an Entry Level Separation (ELS) and send you on your way after a little while. Idiots come up with all sorts of goofball ways to try and get out of Basic: Suicide attempts, deliberately injuring themselves, going AWOL. You don't need to do any of that.

I hope you joined because you got the "call". Otherwise, it may be a long 4-6 years. I've seen my share of young 'uns who were disillusioned or expected something totally different.

Anyway, good luck to ya. For me it was a great 2+ decades. Hopefully, it's the same for you.

Perfectly true statement!

I remember our Instructer in Basic training asked us if we liked bowling (this is in the days when people actually did that), and to raise our hand if we did!

Well some of us knuckleheads did that, and after he asked us what our highest score was, he had everyone who volunteered put on latrine duty to clean tilet bowls and fine-tooth the floors with a toothbrush...I kid you not!

No offence but that's what the marines are all about. If you get out of there holding your head high you are one hell of a dude. I did my second 'tour' in the Finnish navy in the coastal jaegers and earned my green beret through blood sweat and and tears. It's one of those things that no one can take away from you.

Yeah, we had it pretty good in the Air Force....loved it, probably should have stayed in
