So I'm going to a new (new to me) Chinese place tonight, and I looked them up online to see their menu where I saw the thing I always dread at Chinese restaurants, french fries. Is it just me or does anyone else notice a trend with Chinese places that serve fries to have lower quality food?

Who knows perhaps I will be surprised, but it's quite common for me to walk away with an experience that feels half-baked at best.

Our local Chinese buffet has some items like that, but the quality of the food is still good. I usually think its for families that have kids who aren't interested in Chinese food.

I'm not arguing the french fries are bad, I never bother getting them because I want Chinese food, I'm arguing the Chinese food itself tends to suck.

I've tasted chinese buffet fries before and they were pretty good. I definitely don't go to those restaraunts to order fries though lol.

Yes, and I also cringe when I see fried chicken. I understand they're trying to cater to the obese cheap crowd, but give me a f*cking break.

Ha took me a second to realize that you were talking about chicken like you get KFC. I was thinking "hey, half the chicken is fried at most chinese places."

I don't think you understand how popular fried chicken is to the chinese. It has nothing to do with the "obese cheap crowd". Any time I go into a Popeyes or KFC here, it's like 90% asian in there.

Eh, KFC chicken doesn't belong at a chinese restaurant. It usually determines if the restaurant is of quality. I should note that it's always at buffets, which I rarely go to, so it doesn't really matter anyway. I forgot about pizza and mac & cheese. Bleh.

Yeah, I don't think I've ever eaten at a Chinese buffet by choice. At least once you should try to hunt down a pricey, clean place if you want the real deal. Greasy spoon Chinese places are great and all, but you have to hit up those restaurants that do the staple ten-course banquets. I live in Vancouver so there's a pretty good array of choices to pick from... it's been a good long while since I've been to the kind of place that includes fries on its menu.

Lately I've been living almost exclusively off Chinese/Japanese/Vietnamese/Korean food, and I have never seen french fries at any of them. So this thread puzzles me.

Funny you should mention but my family recently went to some Italian restaurant because my mother has a boner for anything that's Italian, even though an Italian restaurant in a shitty strip mall that looked third world wasn't ringing any warning bells. Well, the food was horrible as expected, and they had french fries and my thought was "french fries in an Italian restaurant"... anyhow the food was bad, but worse than expected, my father got food poisoning and was throwing up by the time he got home. Then again it might have been just this place I went to was horrible. Maybe the Chinese restaurant has decent food and they just something generic like a burger or grilled cheese and french fries (I'm guessing) for whiny children or people who are phobic of ethnic food so the adults can enjoy their meal. I noticed some Mexican restaurants do this too. Though most ethnic restaurants that serve burgers and fries shame the order by announcing it for the entire restaurant "cheese burger!!". You'll never know though if this Chinese restaurant will be any good until you try it. But I'd at least check out a Yelp or Google review or few to see if there's cause to stay away.

Nah they have it here in England too (usually at buffet/all you can eat sort of places), I mainly see it as being aimed at fussy eaters, like kids and stuff, although the Chinese closest to me actually has really nice fries and the rest of the food's great too. Most buffet places aren't as good as an actual restaurant will be though, it's just obvious that a big tray of food premade and left under hot lamps wont taste as nice as an individually cooked meal.

I've never seen fries in a Chinese restaurant in the U.S., But in several restaurants in China, I've had a dish that is pretty similar. The strips of potato are fried in a wok with onions and fresh chili peppers. They're not as crispy as french fries though.  This dish is kinda like spicy hash browns and is freakin' delicious.

Also Chinese buffets are as much Chinese restaurants as CiCi's Pizza Buffets are Italian restaurants.

I have been to several Chinese buffet restaurants that had french fries and onion rings. Pizza too. I always just figured they were there for that one guy who doesn't like Chinese food but got dragged to the restaurant by his friends so he'd still have something to eat.

I agree about western entrees in a chinese resataurant menu as being for squeamish kids not wanting to eat chinese food. It has nothing to do with the quality of the food.

Because it's like breaking some unwritten snobbery rule or something.
