Do random strangers sometimes smile at you?

I've noticed that sometimes when I'm in public, a random person will smile at me.

I find it hard to smile back at a random stranger, and then I feel like somewhat of an ass if I don't smile back.

I've been told that they do so to see if it'll make someone's day. You know, like those commercials where someone smiles, and at the end someone gets a new car? Like you said though. I'd feel weird smiling back, but I feel like a butt when I don't too.

This, I find it rather awkward too if I make eye contact and I smile, and they just frown and look away XD

Especially when a teacher is staring directly at you with a smile like she is trying to seduce me or something.

Well I live in Iowa so that's pretty much par for the course. I try to small at everyone who makes direct eye-contact, especially cute girls.

Yeah, and I smile back if I'm not too much in a rush or feeling really tired/depressed. Sometimes, I'm that stranger. There's nothing weird about it, it's just friendliness.

If I receive eye contact from a stranger then it is almost a certainty that I will at the very least say hello. I like talking with strangers and often make as much of an attempt as I can to cause people to open up.

They stare... and laugh. I find it unsettling. Like they're eyeraping me the same way I'm doing to them when they look away.

I get people that smile at me. I get people that stare at me for long periods of time making me nervous. Hell once in the train a group of like 5 people were staring at me and I was freaking out. I never understand why though.

People, in an attempt to be nice, or cheerful, will sometimes smile at you for no other reason than you look friendly.
