IT's not really necessary for you to do this.. unless you're an elite assassin and your life depends on it. You're probably better off just living a regular life instead of stressing yourself over unncessary things like this.

Sounds like the only thing you're doing to your bones is weaken them. Oh yeah, you'll appreciate that when you're 60.

No, actually.. your bones will become stronger if done properly. There are old martial artist who have been doing this for a long time.

Buncha' nay-sayers, all these people. Be different, do it.

I watched a show that documented this old asian guy. It was said he had an Iron Fist and could kill with ONE PUNCH. He lightly rapped his fist against a metal slab for years.

If you want a 3-inch punch=death, start now.

You should probably make sure you know what you're doing. You sound like you're not entirely certain about what you're doing.

I'd strongly suggest just sticking to using weight/speed bags and drinking milk. Even if some martial artists did manage to strengthen their bones with a hammer, it's not worth the risk of doing it wrong and screwing up your knuckles for life.

I was going to comment in this thread when it first appeared. I thought better of it, went to my meditation room and searched my aura and soul as to what the possible meaning of this thread is. After effort that can be compared to passing a kidneystone, I've come to the conclusion that I have absolutely no clue why someone would think that the subject of the thread is sensical, let alone making a thread about it.

How much stronger do you expect your bones to get? 5%, 15%, 50%, 500%? Nearly anything that would break a 'normal' bone will still break a 'stronger' bone, won't it?

It is true you can condition your bones to be stronger. I was watching a show about scientific study of myths/truths of martial arts. They covered the 'head butt' and wanted to answer the question why it would hurt one person and not the other. Normally , it would hurt both pretty much the same, however, if the one guy had his bones conditioned he wouldn't feel the brunt of the force.

They then brought up the fact that a person, over the years, can condition his bones so that they are stronger and they even showed how it changed the structure of the bone microscopically. Maybe someone else has seen the show?

That being said, I don't think the TOC is going about it correctly.

it works to an extent, but what it mostly does is desensitize the area. Your shins, for example, are very sensitive to impact yet they are an MMA fighter's prized weapons in many cases; breaking bottles against one's shins is not uncommon

Idk if it works, but Lyota Machida, the light heavyweight champion in the UFC conditions his knuckles by punching boards. Vuurk
Is that making the bones stronger or is it just giving him callouses that make it not hurt as much when he hits stuff?

its not stupid. Weightlifting also conditions bones; youre stressing certain segments of your skeleton, so naturally they want to strengthen themselves.

unlike a lot of naysayers in this thread, I do know what the TC is describing. it's been done by serious Martial Artists since ancient times. conditioning the knuckles by punching wood or sand has been proven to build up the knuckles (making them less prone to injury from punching someone) and also deaden the nerves (making it so you can hit harder without feeling any pain). I wouldn't go the hammer route personally, but I did some conditioning with wood boards and a wu-shu dummy when I was younger. Dit Da Jow becomes your best friend when doing drills with those things.

you will get some seriously fubar'd looking knuckles if you do it enough.

I am on my 8th day of having swine flu, and you could almost say I am "proud" of the fact my body can be knocked around so much and recover from it. Three days ago I had a fever of 104 and could not walk 10 feet; now I feel pretty good, just a bad cough and a 102 fever

People dont give the human body enough credit. We think we're this fragile thing, and on occassion it can seem that way, but more often than not its ability to endure is amazing.

As for conditioning bones, its not a big deal, is easy, and is safe.

Is this for Muay Thai or some other martial art?

I'm a Muay Thai fighter and I generally condition just by practising my shin kicks on a bag. Over in Thailand they used to kick banana trees as they are apparently the right density to strengthen the bones and kill the nerves without causing yourself too much irreversible damage. Some people hit thier shins with sticks, etc. But using a hammer would do absolutely nothing but make your shins more brittle and weak.

Conditioning is something that should happen naturally through practise, not be forced onto you. Also do try to kick with the correct part of your shin because many people seem unawere that there is muscle there, not just solid bone, and you don't want to damge your muscle.

Conditioning bone is pretty similar to conditioning muscles. You stress them in small doses, and then repair themselves to be stronger. You have to have to know what you're doing to get the best effect though. Going into the gym and trying to pickup the heaviest weight isn't going to make you a body builder (you'll probably just hurt your back), just like hitting yourself w/ a hammer isn't going to make you a MMA fighter.

The thing w/ the knuckles is that you have a lot of joints, and ligaments there which you don't want to "condition". Bones come back stronger after being broken, but ligaments, and joints tend to get torn down.

Conditioning certain body parts for certain Martial Arts is understandable when regulated and done properly.

Hitting your nuckles with a hammer is not one of these things.

It sound's like you need supervision. An adult.

It would be best to let your bone calcify naturally, i.e. not going out of the way to hammer your knuckles (*facepalm*) 100 times, but rather by hitting a PUNCHING BAG 1000 times. If you want to strike tougher objects, try maybe a rubber tire or something that you could potentially break through (like wooden boards in good 'ol karate class from back in the day).

before posting people should look the information up first...the process of calcification in bones isnt some fake usless thing..its been used for generations, it deadens the neveres and creates calcium deposits..leaving a thicker stronger, heavier bone. ive been conditioning them for a while and thats why ive decided to move up to the hammer to maximise results..im not some idiot who doesnt no what hes doing and needs adult supervision...people on here have said you wont get any results and theres no reason to do it but i garuntee if each of us punched knuckle to knucle it wouldnt be me getting hurt...before you go on a thread and start flaming think about what the f*** you say first and only post if your gonna help instead of bein a douche a** troll when someone asks a question.

You need adult supervision. Don't hit yourself with hammers. Condition properly, not by Googling "Bone Conditioning".
