Do you think life exists on this planet?

Astronomers find a livable planet 12 light-years from earth

Researchers have reportedly discovered a new system of planets surrounding a sun-like star that contains one planet with liquid water - meaning that it could potentially support life.

If the Curiosity Rover is proving a little too slow to find life on Mars for your liking, heres something to distract you and, perhaps, give you some hope for the future:Scientists have discovered five potential planets orbiting a star they believe is similar to our sun and one of those planets may be able to support water on its surface.

The star in question is Tau Ceti, only 12 light-years from Earth and visible to the naked eye. The planets surrounding the star are estimated to be two to six times bigger than earth, with one in particular measuring five times the size of our home planet. Said planet is lying in whats commonly known as the stars Goldilocks Zone a position that is neither too hot nor too cold, but instead exactly the right environment to support the prospect of liquid surface water, and therefore, life.

It took information collated from more than 6,000 observations from three telescopes located in Hawaii, Chile, and Australia to discover the planetary system, believed to be the lowest-mass solar system detected yet. The system was discovered using a sensitive process known as the radical velocity method, which searches for a wobble in a stars movement caused by the gravitational pull of orbiting planets. According to Professor Steve Vogt of the University of California at Santa Cruz, who is part of the research team responsible for the discovery, uncovering the planets is in keeping with out emerging view that virtually every star has planets, and that the galaxy must have many such potentially habitable Earth-sized planets. They are everywhere, even right next door.

Sure enough, upwards of 800 planets have been discovered since the 1990s, mostly close to stars similar to Tau Ceti or our own sun. Chris Tinney, a professor at the University of New South Wales and another member of the international team responsible for the discovery, suggested that that number may just be a small fraction of whats really out there. As we stare at the night sky, it is worth contemplating that there may well be more planets out there than there are stars, some fraction of which may well be habitable, he said. R. Paul Butler of Washington states Carnegie Institution, also on the team, believes that the groups new technique for discovering the planet will unlock secrets of our nearest companion stars and their previously hidden reservoirs of potentially habitable planets.

More information about Tau Ceti and its six planetary system appears in the catchily-titled Habitable-zone super-Earth candidate in a six-planet system around the K2.5V star HD40307, a report written by the group that appears in the latest issue of Astronomy and Astrophysics.

Maybe it does.

If it doesn't,one day WE will inhabit it.

Nice now we just need to find a way to supply enough food for enough time to get there for a group of people large enough to colonize it. Alternatively we find a way to break physics as we know it. Supplying food for a couple dozen people who can withstand multiple earth gravities nonetheless.

It's amazing how we've studies only a few planets in detail and we're already coming across planets which could potentially support life. The universe must be full of them.

I read about it some days ago. It is awesome that each year we discover new potentially livable planets. It's a shame though that the colonization part is so far from happening-we haven't even achieved it in our own solar system. Hurry up people!

This kind of stuff amazes me, I can't even begin to imagine the reaction of out planet when we discover intelligent life, it will be the biggest step mankind has taken since evolving beyond the cave.

I wonder if there's a solar system out there with more than one planet with life. I can imagine the disruption it would cause if both planets gained life intelligent enough to explore space.

I wonder what the atmospheric pressure is like on a planet is six times the mass of the Earth. Liquid water might just end up staying liquid or ice without turning into gas.

Saw this on Newsy but incredible news nontheless. Someday we'll develop the technology to travel faster than light. Or use warp speed. Or maybe mass relays?

As for life on that planet, I'm not sure but hopefully yes.

The day we find a planet one light year away and habitable. We should all hope for some advanced alien ship with light speed to crash into Earth. Take the ship learn of it technology. Make our own but bigger and use it to transport people, material, etc to a habitable planet. Or do something to push the spce industry further, space race, space war? If someone starts placing nukes in space im sure the world will say F the agreement of no weapons in space and make everyone make space weaponary, at the same time advancing us further, with the risk of us all dying from a mass nuclear attack from space. My imagination.

no, it would kill us. the gravity would keep our blood from circulating properly, so our bodies wouldn't get any oxygen (if there was even any oxygen there). the only thing right about the planet is the temperature, apparently.

Not necessarily, the equation for determining a planets gravity takes the planet's radius into account. So that planet could have alot more gravity or not so much more.

Only because we did not develop there. If we were to live there, we would need some generations where people lived with a stronger and stronger gravity to build them up for it.
