I think characters are put in tiers based more than strenght. All things go into account, including speed, weight, and moves.

there is not an official tier list for Brawl yet

but it is certian that Snake and MK are the top.

and tier lists are created based on a whole lot of tournament results

it might take another year till an offical tier list is created for brawl

also tier lists also change over time due to more discoveries in the game like advanced techniques, glitches etc.

mgelineau

If you're looking for strength, King Dedede is the strongest. I think the highest rated are Mr. Game and Watch, MetaKnight, and Snake. I use Snake (and own with him btw), but I recommend playing a bunch of matches using a random character to see who you are best with. You may find you are better with a quick, light character, or a strong, heavy one.

No Snake isn't the highest tier in power, but he is in overall. But from what I've played of him and heard, he's damn hard to master, but if you do he's freaking godly. And yeah Ike is probably god-tier in strength, but not in overall. He's almost toooo freaking strong though.

What alot of people aren't taking into account is that Tiers only matter if you play the character well. Most of the characters get their spot because of the advanced techniques they have availible to them such as Snake's "Boost Smashing", combos, infinites, and things like glitches in addition to weight, speed, recovery, smashes, specials, priority, etc. Characters like Snake and Metaknight are only as good as they player using them. All it takes is to find a character that suits your playing style no matter where they stand on the tier list. I've only won around 10% of my Snake matches because he doesn't suit how I fight regardless of the fact that I can perform his advanced techniques and so forth. With the direction the game went with making the character roster a little more balanced and the combat more defense oriented it might be awhile before you find a character you like. Half the characters I like to use are mid to low tier which still doesn't stop me from playing them seriously. With enough practice you can still make a lower tier character dangerous.

Snake and Meta Knight are definately the ones winning most of the tourneys so I would put them in a god/broken tier, other than that

Very high tier: (very hard to beat/may have broken aspects)

ROB, G&W, DDD

High tier: (very hard to beat a player who knows how to play the character)

Falco, Fox, Olimar, Marth, Toon Link, Diddy Kong, Pikachu, Wolf

Middle tier: (very hard to beat a player who has mastered the character)

Wario, DK, Ice Climbers, Kirby, Zelda/Shiek, Bowser, Lucas, Pokemon Trainer, Lucario, Peach, Wario, Zamus, Pit

Low tier: (hard in the right hands but they have disadvantages that ouweigh any advantages)

Sonic, Luigi, Mario, Ness, Yoshi, Ike, Samus, Jigglypuff, Link

Very low tier: (players who know how to play these characters will still have trouble against worse players using other characters)

Captain Falcon, Ganondorf

How is Game and Watch top tier and King Dedede very high? O_0 There are also many other flaws with that list but there are to many and I don't feel like listing them. Other than that, nice list. Ike players got owned. XD

The problem with tier lists is that characters who emerge on top of early tier lists become overused, so the list is unlikely to change. It takes at least two years before you can get an accurate tier list. Use whichever character you're most comfortable using.

Fairly broken list. It depends completely on how you play. I've seen several tier lists and they mostly all differ.

Sheik, Captain Falcon and Samus are all bottom tier? Pokemon Trainer, Ike and Sonic low tier?

Clearly pure opinion and nothing more. Each person is suited to playing with different characters.

For example, I'm absolute garbage with Ike no matter how long I spend fighing with him. I severely dislike his lack of speed because I'm much more adept to faster and lighter characters.

So, once again, tier lists are just opinions.

No. Every single reasonable tier list has Falcon at the bottom, or very close to it. He has the lowest priority in the game, even lower than Ganondorf.

He's still a great character. Although he can't perform direct combo's very well, he's more of a hit and run character, which is probably why he can run so fast. With Falcon, it's all about running around, faking and tricking the heck out of your opponent and landing powerful blows when they're open.

All four have Falcon at the bottom. Great character? Not a chance. I still use him occasionally, but I can still admit how bad he is.

while I agree that tier lists are mostly opinions, there are no doubt patterns emerging for example characters like Snake seem to counter many characters with ease, while characters like jigglypuff can counter relatively few easily, to make things fairer it would seem appropriate to have the characters that are in the same legue fight each other, this is fairer for the players who like to play jigglypuff since they wont get demolished in tourneys by players worse than them. you can definately argue that every character has advantages but realistically even the best jigglypuff players wont be beating snakes anytime soon. You might also be bad with Ike since he is widely considered a noob character and better players with high tier characters seem to be taking advantage of his huge lag time between attacks easily, this is why he might fit better with lower tier characters.

With enough practice you can still make a lower tier character dangerous.Squire_Ramza

In brawl, it's twice as hard now for a low tier character to beat characters like snake or MK. And i'm not even kidding. It's possible sure, but the gap has been stretched to far now. It's less balanced because of this.

No. Every single reasonable tier list has Falcon at the bottom, or very close to it. He has the lowest priority in the game, even lower than Ganondorf.

Dark_Link142

He's still a great character. Although he can't perform direct combo's very well, he's more of a hit and run character, which is probably why he can run so fast. With Falcon, it's all about running around, faking and tricking the heck out of your opponent and landing powerful blows when they're open.

With all due respect dude, falcon can't even approach up to people like marth or snake without getting punished badly. Hell, people with projectiles can keep falcon at bay, forcing him to approch, which is bad because, like toadster said, he has next to 0 priority. His moves are stopped by a mere jab.

All four have Falcon at the bottom. Great character? Not a chance. I still use him occasionally, but I can still admit how bad he is.

For the third time, tier lists are just opinions. It's all about the playstyles and how the character is used.

no offense darklink, but it's like you have your hands over your ears so that you can block out every argument we;ve given you and constantly dismissing each one with "it's all just an opinion!". We've given you facts to back up our claims, where are yours?

I agree, dark_link142, because if tiers lists were fact, why are there so many different ones? Kudos to you dark_link142.

Facts? Let's see, where shall I start...

As I mentioned before in my previous statement, Captain Falcon is more of a hit and run character. But that doesn't mean he doesn't have combos. His up air attack (back flip kick thing) is excellent in providing a quick and powerful surprise attack which can potentially KO an opponent (usually around 100% damage). This attack can be used after doing a running tackle or a grab attack (up grab or down grab) and can usually be done twice.

His neutral air attack allows for a quick double kick which has fast recovery upon landing allowing to make several choices. Grab, Neutral A attack, roll, or repeat double kick. This creates a potentially powerful combo depending on how you proceed from there.

But as I said, he's not really a character you can do a lot of combos with. His hit-and-run style of combat is useful for faking opponents out. His fast speed mixed with his powerful attacks can be deadly. Almost every move Falcon has can be used to KO an opponent. That's why doing hit and run attacks is so key in building up damage. Completing the KO isn't hard to do since he's so powerful. The easiest move to KO and enemy is his standard up air attack (backflip kick). His standard back air attack (surprise punch from the back) is also very useful. By running at an enemy, then quickly turning back and doing his back air attack, your opponent probably woudn't be expecting such an attack and can be KO'ed.

At the same time, doing this hit and run style combat can make Falcon a predictable character. That's why when your opponent begins to catch on to this pattern of attack, throwing in random attacks like Falcon Kick (bad recovery but quick to launch) can mess your enemy up.

The Falcon Dive is useful for setting up combos and is a handy suprise meteor attack. Once your opponent is knocked off the edge, wait for them to return a certain distance. Jump over them and do the Falcon Dive when the other character is about to perform their recovery attack. Your enemy will be meteored and Captain Falcon can make a safe return to the edge since a successful Dive in the air allows an automatic short hop to occur.

Falcon's tilt smashes can be helpful depending on how they're used. His down tilt is a sweeping ground kick which hits the opponent into the air and can be followed by a short hop and neutral air attack (double kick). This is useful when your opponent is at lower damage so they don't get launched too high. His forward tilt is a quick kick (try saying that 10 times :P ) and isn't very useful. His up tilt though, is surpisingly handy. Opponents who get launched up by a grab attack or the down tilt can be attacked by this move since it can hit your opponent before they have a chance to recover. It's also fairly powerful and can KO opponents roughly around 125%.

Captain Falcon is a difficult character to master. Admittedly, most of his moves have bad recovery times but once you get to properly use him, he can be incredibly powerful.

Another attack, "The Knee" ( :P ), is difficult to connect but is useful. When a character who can't recover from one of Falcon's attacks (down tilt, Falcon Dive, etc) is in the air, a swift knee attack is handy here.

Key points:

Hit and run style attacks to build up damage
Several short and effective combos
Many surprise attacks
Powerful and speedy but not used for direct combat

I agree with all the people saying tiers aren't true, at least now, maybe by next year when it' been a year since release. Captain Falcon is the second fastest player in the game and other than the heavyweights and a couple others he probably has the most KO power/moves. Dark Link told you how you can use him to be effective, and even though he doesn't have the combo potential he has the KO potential which to me once the opponent has aroun 75% damage is all that matters. I use him as my most used character (refraining from using the term "main") and my fight style is just to keep doing unexpected attacks on the opponent. They really do make your opponent think on what to do to stop them, and that's when you don't give them time to think. My two hit combo for many of my KOs is the raptor dive and then a KNEE, or any other aerial depending on if the opponent is in a position in the air in which I can't get them. Only Mario opposes a threat to that really because I've had a LOT of computer Marios (sadly) cape me when I use that move and sometimes push me off the edge. Yeah ignore everything I said but Captain Falcon is good and tiers don't exist yet, though most can agree Snake and MK are usually top tier people. I think tiers balance more in Brawl by being top, very high, high, mid-high and middle or something like that, with no actual bottom.

You should practice with every character and then YOU decide which one you handle better.

hit and run-didn't i just tell you he has next to no priority? how do you expect him to even land his hits well when all of his smashes have start up lag, knee can barely connect annymore and most of his tilts have crappy range? And what will running away do when he can be punished easily by people who can spam projectiles all day, forcing him to approch anyway which will punish him further by him having moves that be stopped with a simple mario punch.

several short and effective combos-what combos do you speak of? Good luck starting any with no hitstun and hard to land air game.

surprise attacks which are what? All of his smash attacks are slow, his b moves have ending lag, recovery is easily gimped to hell and back. and him not being in direct combat is a good thing? he has no choice but to fight at close range, he has no projectiles. his down tilt ino no way can push a foe up for an immediate neutral air. anyone who can DI there way out will make that combo useless each time.

also, you arguing with me over falcon not being the worst character proves our point that tiers do exist.
