Well, um let's see...Only Mario universe characters can star in a Mario game. Link couldn't possibly have a kart because of his time period. That's a foolish question. Don't give me the SSB crap either, that's basically a collab of Nintendo's all-stars.
Well, the game consists of all MARIO franchise characters. It's not like a Super Smash Bros game where all of the famous Nintendo franchise characters are in a game.

No wait, that's crap. I say no to the idea of Link behind the wheel of a motor vehicle. Since they've chucked the karts out the window and are driving hydraulic rhinos and chitty chitty bang bangs, I don't see why Link can't ride Epona. And Fox McCloud could ride one of those what-do-you-call-them (the tanks...). DK could ride the rhino, or the ostrich.
SSB worked with all the "serious" characters like Link, Samus and Fox because it had a sort of neutralness to it. Mario kart doesn't have such a neutralness and would hence not work with "serious" character. Just my two cents.

Goddammit, he's an elf. Hyrule saving ability =/= driving ability. He's been told several times how to use his sword and shield, and yet he still needs reminding of these skills. With this being the case, how could you possibly expect him to master a reverse park, or a hill start, especially in a manual.

They should include link as an easter egg in the next mario kart. Give it Epona, and when they show him in the race they should do something funny like drawing the other characters with a WTF-like Face when they see this guy racing in a horse.

In Majoras mask Link turns into one of those rock eating dudes who could haul a$$ way better then any cart in Mariao Kart! If he can race successfully there, he can do it in Mario Kart.

He is floating, but like a hovercraft instead of say Superman. He for the most part will appear like he's still on the ground when the Hoover Hoofs are activated, but due to the cushion of air he'll be able to slide/glide when he gets to corners.

Hover hooves? You wouldn't have any control over which way you went when you activated them. You'd smash straight into a wall. It'd be useless...Megadanxzero
Not true, you'd already be going in the direction you want to go before activation. If you needed to make a correction you'd simply turn them off and then back on again as needed. You'd only smash into a wall if soemone hit you into that said wall or can't drive.

yea instead of all the mario sports titles, they could have nintendo ones like smash bros. Im just worried that some of the characteres might not work as well in the context of sports as mario and pals do. Its a risky but intriging idea

It can still go around corners though. And crazy is what makes the whole thing fun. Things are more fun when they are crazy.

Those characters just can't have the third party attention like Mario does. I mean "Super Hylia Racing" wouldn't be a great seller besides the hardcore fans of The Legend of Zelda. Mario Kart sells for everyone, because it's approachable for everybody. Metroid is at least a little more approachable than Zelda, like Metroid Prime Pinball, and some other innovative Third-Party games that can be achieved.
It's been repeated many times, but I'll say it again. It's "Mario"Kart, guy. Not Zeldakart, not Metroidkart, "Mario"kart. If there should be a colab with the Mario characters at all, I'd say Sonic and co. Sega has been making many games for Nintendo so it would make sense, but I know some of you might still abolish the idea so simply put, Mario, and only mario.
