GoldenEye Remake for Wii and DS Leaked by Activision

RSS

I thought waiting 12 years for a StarCraft sequel was bad, but it turns out we've actually been waiting 13 years for a GoldenEye remake, and we didn't even know it was coming. Many companies have wanted to remake the game, and everybody else has wanted to play it, but it's always been held up by red tape. The James Bond License was bought by Electronic Arts in 1999, and then by Activision in 2007. However, the original GoldenEye 007 game for the Nintendo 64 was owned by Nintendo and Rare, and Rare is now owned by Microsoft, leading to a tragic custody battle over the years. Microsoft wouldn't let Nintendo re-release the original on the Wii's Virtual Console, and Nintendo wouldn't let Rare remake it for the 360's XBLA. Now we know why. Activision has their own remake ready, and it's exclusively for Nintendo's Wii and DS systems.

GoNintendo received an anonymous tip about a leaked Activision survey, with pictures of two covers for a Wii game, a golden ****c Controller, and a new Wii Zapper modeled after the infamous Golden Gun. It also had this tasty quote, revealing that the game will have improved graphics and physics, 8 player online multiplayer, and Daniel Craig will be replacing Pierce Brosnan:

"GoldenEye for the Nintendo 64 was a game that defined a genre. Now, after 13 years of gaming innovation, the legend is re-imagined. Developed from the ground up for the Wii, GoldenEye takes advantage of the latest technology to deliver the same intense experience with today's graphics and physics. Play a modernized version of the ****c story with the new Bond (Daniel Craig), more lethal and cunning than ever as you take on missions around the world. Relive all the legendary moments from the original game: St Petersburg, the Caribbean and numerous other levels. Leverage the ****c arsenal of weapons and gadgets as you fight Onatopp, Trevelyan and their adversaries, from the ****c PP7 to the high tech assault rifle, sniper rifles and even the tank. The enhanced multiplayer experience offers 4 player split-screen like the original and introduces 8 player online matches. GoldenEye is 13 years better, are you?"

But that's not all. Then Eurogamer got their own anonymous tip, learning that the game is about to be announced at E3 and will be released in November. It is being co-developed by the UK-based Eurocom and the US-based n-Space. Eurocom previously worked on another Nintendo 64 Bond game, The World Is Not Enough, and n-Space has worked on some Duke Nukem titles, Geist, and the DS Call of Duty games. We'll have to wait until E3's official announcement, but I think we can assume that Eurocom will be developing the Wii title while n-Space develops the DS title.

I'm not sure how I feel about Daniel Craig sneaking into my pre-Craig Bond games, but then again Casino Royale was a remake of Bond's first adventure so maybe that makes GoldenEye post-Craig Bond? I'm not sure. Either way it's not that important, since Pierce Brosnan never fought Oddjob or Mayday, and it was still great fun in the 1997 game.

Like all late 90's attempts at photorealistic humans and environments, the graphics did age rather poorly over the years. But the gameplay was as solid as they come, and very deserving of a facelift with today's technology. It will be interesting to see how the younger generation of FPS gamers, those who grew up on franchises like Halo and Call of Duty, react to the grandaddy of console FPS games making its triumphant return. It was the best-selling FPS on a home console for 7 years after all, until Halo 2 took its crown. And it's still frequently referred to as the greatest game adaptation of a film ever made.

Personally, I can't wait to see the game's DK and paintball modes with today's graphics, or how many enemies they'll fit on the screen when a security alarm goes off. Klobbs in the Caverns anyone? RCP-90s in the Facility? Rocket launchers in the basement? 1 on 1, Aztec, Slappers Only? Speedruns of the Facility level are going to be all the rage, again.

Awesome, now I don't have to worry about whether or not they'll release in the Wii Shop. Do you know if you'll be able to use Classic controllers?

Why would you want to use a CC for a FPS game?

@ the topic: This is pretty hype, i want to see this really flourish with a formula of it's own and not that of the typical blockbluster FPS's.

This is real? I... think I'll have to play this with my friends. No one has a working N64. Could also be cool to have online this time. I wonder which will be the coolest of the two versions..

If this is real, than I am excited as hell to see this game on the horizon... I was kind of wanting to see if maybe Goldeneye64 would show up on the Virtual Console, but did not have high hopes because it is a rare game... This could be sweet if it does not get messed up... Can we trust activision? ehh... Anyone know who the developer is???

scratch that question, found my answer above... now i worry that the developers may not have the ability to pull this off successfully... I can see it now: FAIL... just have to wait a bit longer for E3 I guess...

I'm not sure if this will be good or not.

The past james bond games have been REALLY bad. Hopefully since this is a remake of goldeneye that it will be really good, but i'm not too sure.

I've got to say, I wasn't really expecting this. If anything, I thought it would end up being released on the 360 in some form. Anyway, Didn't own a Nintendo 64, and didn't play this game before. Given my past experience with games (especially N64 games) with a lot of nostalgia around them, I doubt it will be as good as a lot of people say it is, especially considering some of the changes made to the genre since that time. But at the same time I think it's nice that they're releasing it so that people who were fans of the original can check it out, and I might end up getting it as well.

You totally need to check out the original dude! it is a great time... don't hope for a lot of "cool" stuff as the game is much over a decade old... but do yourself a favor and check it out.

I am very excited, but still cautious. Afterall, its not being developed by Rare in its prime.

N space has done some magnificent work for Nintendo and activision before, namely COD MW, Mobilized ,World at war , Star Fox command. I think they have a lot of fps experience overall and some wii expertise.Given that they managed good in design of their games, the only hurdle i find is the fact they arent that savyy of wii. However im sure Activision will make sure they have all the tools to optimize a decent wii engine(probably COD4 modified wii engine ). Yes i think i can be .. moderately optimistic about this. I dont count this as one of the latest so so Bond movie tie ins, but as a remake of a respected classic. Coming to think of it, as little as 2 years ago we used to hear OFTEN wii only had 3 shooters after 3 years( COD3, red stel , MOH), all bad at it(and one fpa)...And now theres a steady influx of them(rs2, mw2, BO, Goldeneye, C2) in a single one.Quite enough to change the landscape.

You might want to mention that it is still a rumor instead of making people think it has been confirmed.

n-Space didn't make Star Fox Command that was Q-Games. n-Space did make Geist on the GCN. They were confirmed to be working on something for Winter 2010. I thought it would be Geist 2 but I will definitely buy this.

If this is true, and it's a remake and not just another spinoff, then.... bleh. If they try to keep the same levels and stuff, I think it'll be pretty underwhelming to most gamers these days. And I have a feeling that any "updating" of the gameplay would end up being off somehow... just far enough from the feel of original to kill nostalgia, and just close enough to make new players feel like it's dated.

The update of Perfect Dark on XBL is the way to do it. Don't touch the game itself; just update the textures and framerate to look decent on our newfangled giant TVs. That kind of remake of Goldeneye with Wii controls (the dual analog controls of PD pretty much ruin it for me) and online would be awesome, but I don't think that's what this will be..... We'll see.

First thing is Daniel Craig can NEVER replace THE BOND Pierce Brosnan. Daniel is a good action movie actor but he can NEVER be as Debonair as Brosnan.

If this is true, then yes, updating the game that was already there is the way to do this.

I still wish the Wii got Perfect Dark though. I liked that MUCH better than Goldeneye and Goldeneye was Awesome so that's saying how awesome Perfect Dark was. After playing PD64, I felt like really infiltrating a huge secret agency building, using my spybot to obtain priceless info and pulling off a Perfect Agent Mission.

Give me Perfect Dark 64 with Wii Controls (Preferably COD or RS2 controls with Conduit customization), 8 player online playand we have a winner.

This game will be bought day one if true. This is a system seller title if any.

Also, there were hints that the Wii was getting Goldeneye for some time now, but this news that you posted kinda confirms it.

Here's the early info hints:

Goldeneye 007 Wii-Bound

Goldeneye Remake coming to Wiiin 2010

Then there was the obvious hint that the Wii didn't get Perfect Dark's remake so obviously, this was the next best thing. Hopefully Brosnan is selectable if not the main Goldeneye because Craig just won't suffice.

I was just thinking about Goldeneye this morning, and how I wished I could play it with a more modern control scheme (Wii Motion or Dual Analog). Fantastic news. If they put even modest effort into this, I'll grab it.

not entirely sure this is all that good a thing .. .. .. its a classic game but only because of what it was at the time. The games formula set many of the standards for the genre that are still in use and have been improved upon today ... I think theres a real risk that in a modern form the game might not be as appealing as it once was ...

It's gonna blow. Those who played it played it with its "remake" won't get the same awe and it just wouldn't be the same as back a decade ago. Those who never played it will see it as some awful graphics game and very generic. Either way, it wouldn't work.

Is this a remake, or a re-imagining? The article body makes it sound like the latter, and I actually hope it's the latter. I cannot imagine a game like Goldeneye 007 having the same "wow" factor today as it did before; it was amazing at the time, but it really kinda shows its age today, especially in its single-player mode.

I think its the graphics, AI, physics, and controls that are dated. The only thing they did not say was updated out of those is the AI. I love the campaigns environment, story, stealth/run and gun tactics and so forth. They just need AI that can actually shoot you :P. That being said, the MP is the reason it is so great. If it has all those things updated with motion controls, then we are in business!

I doubt it will be a direct remake, the fact that they are changing Bond already changes it too much to be a remake. I think this will go the route of Shattered Memories. I had mixed feelings hearing about this yesterday, I like the idea of them attempting to bring such an important historical game to gamers who have never had a chance to play it, but on the flipside, i would hate to see it knocked off of its pedestal(since people seem so eager to do it and name Halo as the innovator) by a lackluster update. I would be so hesitant if Nintendo was involved.

Oh, I don't know, I liked the easily exploitable AI. I always liked it when an enemy started kneeling down, because I knew with 100% certainty that he was definitely not going to follow my motions from then on out and I could take my time in killing him. :P It's the enemies that fire while standing up that are the problem.

A re-imagining like this won't have the nostalgia factor, and honestly, that's what Goldeneye gets by on. Much like a game like say, Final Fantasy 7, it hasn't aged well in terms of playability. What would be great is if Activision could get Nintendo and MS/Rare to actually talk things out like adults and get the original on the VC, and the graphically remade one on XBLA. That would be a win/win for everyone. Not that they care about making us gamers happy. I'd nab the VC version and revel in the blurry graphics and tinny sound effects of my youth, maybe even get my brothers to come over for some deathmatch and trick them into walking through a doorway with like fifteen prox mines around it.

Casino Royale was a remake of a parody movie of a book based on bond's first outing (in book form).

They add more than just an updated resolution/graphics with the XBLA versions.

They also add updated controls supporting dual analog (instead of single) and they add full XBL support such as online play, mic, patches, dlc, ect...

Wish they could get the XBLA version and the VC version out though as they would most likely be/due better than this one imo!

It should be the first game with better graphics better controls(wii controls) and online-multiplayer not a game sort of like it.

I agree with this. I'm crossing my fingers that they won't wreck anything while they try to 'improve' it.

It's gonna blow. Those who played it played it with its "remake" won't get the same awe and it just wouldn't be the same as back a decade ago. Those who never played it will see it as some awful graphics game and very generic. Either way, it wouldn't work.wiifan001

I fear you may be right... What will make the chances of your prediction true, would be if it runs on the CoD Reflex engine... poop on that...

It's about time that the licensing and patent issues got sorted out for Goldeneye. It needs to show up on the shop channel. Trying to play it now though, it's not as easy as it used to be. Controls for FPS's have evolved quite a bit since then, so if there is a reboot done, I hope they take this into account... or even let you play with both classic and modernized FPS controls.

But let's actually up the graphics, up the AI, improve the sound quality, give it motion controls, expand the online..... ....and now we have something that isn't Goldeneye.
