It would be nice to see a review of Pilotwings. That's the only one I'm really interested in. I've already preordered it so unless everyone agrees that it is HORRIBLE, I'm still getting it. As long as the TC is going to keep this updated, this should definitely be stickied.

I don't think people realize but if you've been following Famitsu for many years they are known to score high on almost every over-hyped game/system. Not that i'm against any of the launch titles but really? Some of those scores seem a little too high for games that are...nothing new...

Eurogamer has their third 3DS review up. It's Super Street fighter 4, found here:

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-03-02-super-street-fighter-iv-3d-edition-review

And the score is...
8/10, which makes three 8/10's from Eurogamer. Going well in my opinion.
Me too. The game sounds great on paper (hack-n-slash action, branching storyline that changes based on player choice, new missions automatically downloaded through SpotPass), and the preview videos look pretty cool, but I still don't have a good idea of how it actually plays.

I don't know if the magazine has changed recently, but for decades Famitsu was the most respected and hardcore game reviewer in Japan. Getting a good review in Famitsu has always been considered significant.

Looks like SSFIV has an overall average of 8.5 (averaging all of the 4 reviews). SSFIV on consoles had an average of around 9.0, so that's not a bad transition from console to portable, especially for a fighting game.

I got the PSP version, which is generally considered very faithful to the rest of the series, for like £3 on ebay, specifically to see if I'd like the series ahead of the 3DS release. I wasn't impressed, and many western reviewers generally aren't either. It does have a relatively strong dedicated following, but generally over here the series is criticised for shallow and repetitive gameplay (mash attack then do super move ever now and again). The Japanese love it though.

If you have a PS3, you can probably still download the demo for the Gundam version. It's the same game as Dynasty Warriors, but with Gundams replacing the human warriors. Or again, if you have an older console or a PSP, you can probably get an older game in the series for a small amount. Or just try reading/watching reviews for older games in the series. It is a notorious series for offering the same gameplay each time so I doubt that'll change with the 3DS game.

That was one of my concerns. I read an interview with the lead designer who said that he purposely designs these games so that they can be beaten by simply hammering the A button, which was the only part of the game that didn't sound particularly appealing to me. Interestingly, the reason they're so popular in Japan is because the characters and major events are based on real Japanese history.

Ouch... SSFIV is looking more and more likely as my launch title. I wish they'd made Pilotwings a comprehensive game, added some new stuff (besides the 3D obviously). Instead it's sounding like a short rehash. Disappointing.

I expect Steel Diver to get a similar score to Pilotwings. It seems that it's suppose to be short/low on content. If it's held against Pilotwings then it's going to be held against that if true. SSF4 is looking at the moment to be THE best game for the US launch. I wouldn't be surprised if Dead or Alive got similar scores but it's been pushed back. Ridge Racer is looking pretty solid as well. Then there is Layton but only Japan is getting that at the moment.

CrazyOldDave

Hmmm... I'm a big fan of Eurogamer's reviews, but this one was odd in that after reading two pages of text, I still don't have a solid idea of exactly how the game plays and whether or not it's something I would enjoy. The reviewer kept comparing it to earlier games in series which means nothing to me because I've never played them, so I would have liked to have seen the game judged on its own merits.

Edit:Here's an interesting editorial making a convincing argument that the Warriors series is misunderstood and misrepresented by Western gaming journalists.

With the warriors games its something you will just have to try for yourself, I used to love playing them especially through the multiplayer campaign. If you can, get hold of either Dynasty Warriors 3, 4, 5, or 6 for any platform and have a go, you can pick some of these up quite cheap, also the playstation is the best platform to buy these on usually.

Also reviewers always seem to do that especially since they don't dive deep enough into the game to be able to contrast it properly as an improvement, I imagine them also sitting their thinking "why do they still make these games?" the answer to this I believe is because the japanese love the series as it deserves to be and koei sees it as one of their best games so they keep selling it over here in some kind of hope that a western reviewer may realise how good it is just like the eastern press does. Thanks for the editorial too, it was nice to see what I think of the Warriors series in an article.

It's just odd to see Famitsu give it a near perfect score and Eurogamer give it a score that is usually reserved for deeply flawed or outright broken games, especially since the review described an otherwise solid game that the reviewer just happened to not like for reasons that weren't adequately explained. I think the editorial I posted above makes an interesting point that perhaps these games would receive more positive coverage in the West if the gaming press regarded them as niche titles. I'm really thinking of biting the bullet on this one and just buying it anyway since I tend to enjoy quirky games that don't always resonate with the mainstream.

On a scale of 1-10, only the very worst sites reserve 5 for extremely flawed or broken games. ^

The Dynasty and Samurai Warriors games are usually criticised because the games (supposedly) barely evolve and are so shallow in terms of gameplay. Japanese gamers have different tastes in many ways to Western ones, and the same presumably goes for reviewers. While the Japanese are sometimes more comfortable with gameplay that has less depth and that is more focussed on the narrative (look at FF13 as an example), and plus, the Warriors games are heavily based on Chinese and Japanese history, which is cited as a further reason they in particular enjoy them.

I bought the PSP Dynasty Warriors for a couple of quid to see how I'd take to the series (given that I'd heard how samey all the games are it seemed a good way to test). I played it for about an hour, and while I can see the appeal for some, I found it fairly shallow, extremely repetitive and rather boring, but I can easily see why people can happily sit on either side of the fence on the game.

General concensus is that it's the sort of game established fans will lap up, and those who didn't like previous ones will never get into. For those who say "but I never played the previous games" - why not just watch video reviews or read text reviews of the previous games then?

IGN gave Pilotwings and Steel Driver a 7. It seems like the 3DS is following the same pattern as all other gaming systems. There is the one high profile game on the sytem worth getting and the rest of the games range from average to good. Street Fighter 4 seems to be the standout title. The reason why Dynasty Warriors gets low scores all the time is because the core gameplay is repetitive. Just mash the weak attack button followed by a strong attack and the end of the combo string. There is only so many times you can play redesigned levels of the Yellow Turban Rebellion and the Battle of Chi Bi. I used to be a huge DW fan until DW 5.

Help me out guys. Pilotwings is my first game, but I don't know whether to get SSF3DE, Nintendogs or Ridge Racer 3D as my second game, and all 3 are radically different. What do you guys think?havokmaster

Street Fighter. Ridge Racer is fun, but it is basically the same everytime with tweaks here and there.
