I have big hands so I would say the xbox 360 would have to be my favorite controller. The PS controller is too small and I never liked the toggle on the N64 because it felt so fragile. Never liked the SNES controller, too small. Even the big Genesis controllers didn't work for me.

That's a tough one. I think I mangled my left thumb on all of 'em. I think the PS controllers have the best ergonomic design and with the addition of the L3/R3 sticks, my thumbs are spared.

I still think the Super Nintendo controoler was the best. It was very comfortable to me, and it worked perfectly for fighting and platforming games.

The Super Nintendo had the most influential controller ever. Seriously, it invented shoulder buttons! However, the best is the 360 controller, which carries on the legacy of the Super Nintendo Controller better than even that weird classic controller Nintendo put out for the Wii.

With the 360 controller's D-pad, first place goes to the Dual Shock.

In modern days I'd vote the 360 controller as it's the most comfortable for my hands anyway. But I also loved the N64 controllers back in the day. Of course it may just be found memories of the console in general. Either way, Nintendo had the best in the classic consoles.

If you consider each controller based on when it came out, then hands-down the SNES. Everything else before (examples: NES- too blocky, Genesis- Not enough buttons) and after (DualShock- analog placement, GC- needs another trigger and bigger D-pad) I've had some kind of gripe with.

GCN had the best controller for me. I just love using my wavebird still today, just the most comfortable in my opinion... Which is a good thing because the N64 controller before it was horrible, aany controller that gives me a blister and I can't reach the D-pad in a reasonable way without moving my entire left hand is bad.

the best controller for it's time is the SNES controller. I feel the xbox 360 controller is the best controller to date, but is more of an evolutionary process.

I'd also like to add an honorary mention to "the duke" which is probably the most underrated controller of all time, and a "we hardly knew ye" award to "the boomerang" which may of been a good controller if fanboy's weren't such tools. It could of been crappy, but I think people should judge a controller on feel, not on looks.

I would say it's a tie between the nes and snes controllers. Those 2 controllers influenced just about everything you see on a modern controller. The nes invented the d-pad along with the start-select buttons. The snes controller pioneered the shoulder triggers as well as the top-bottom-left-right layout of the action buttons. Look at the original dual shock, it's basically just an snes controller with handlebars.

Super Nintendo. Genesis was great but not enough games were made with the 6-button controller. 2nd place goes to 360. The setup of the duel joystick just improved upon the groundbreaking xbox controller. And 3rd, DuelShock. It just works, although its not that great for racing games though with the triggers.

For me it is a close one between the 360 controller and the Playstation 2 controller. But if I absolutely had to pick I'll go with the PS2 controller just because it feels like it fits in my hands just right.

I must say, after all these years the XBox360-Controller is the only one I´m really happy with...exept the digi-cross.The design lies perfectly in my (pretty big) Hands.

The Xbox-Pad was a great combination of Sega´s former Pads and there is nothing to moan about, exept the Black and White Buttons who are not that good to reach overall.Equal which version of the Pad.Luckily the Game-designers known that too and used them pretty clever, which almost equals it.

The PS1/PS2/PS3-Controller isn´t bad at all,but also the digi-cross is far from perfect and the analog-sticks are horrible for FPS-Games.The unergonomic shape is almost a legend, because it was horrible but people still got used to it in all these years.

The Saturn Controllers all had it´s favs and flaws, but had been great too overall.

The DC-Controller just missed 2 buttons and felt a bit strange at first, but I got used to it.

The SNES-Controller was great for it´s time and was by far the best 16-Bit Controller.

The Worst Controller ever was the N64´s without question, because the desingn killed much of the fun and made multi-titles almost unplayable, plus it had by far the worst quality ever.It was ok for exclusive games but evern there you could have had mor fun with a "regular" Pad.

The GC-Controller follows as the 2nd worst, because of awful sticks, bad placed buttons and a digi-cross out of hell.Maybe acceptable for 12 year old children, but for grown-ups just small and awful.

Genesis-Not Enough Buttons? Is that even a valid criticism, or complement

My favorites rank as follows: Genesis(Best D-pad ever created), 360 Wireless (Most Comfortable Pad Ever In My Hands, But Crappy D-pad), SNES(Second most comfortable ever, decent d-pad, most balanced controller).

Oh btw (Sega came out with a few version of the Genesis controller):

X360 is very comfortable for 3D games. The SNES controller made SF II possible, so it rules. As a jack of all trades, I still prefer the Sony pad.

I will never understand how anyone could like the Playstation controllers, or the Wii Classic controller for that matter, the analog sticks are in such a weird place it makes it way more difficult to control than it should be.

I just ordered a silver Dual Shock 3 from Japan, and for $70, I'm hoping it will be the best controller ever. I really like both the sixaxis and the 360 pad quite a bit. I feel like they are both highly evolved classic pads, that fit right in with the greatness of the Super Nintendo controller. I don't care for the d-pad on the 360 controller, and I think the face buttons are unresponsive... but it is still a great pad. I am bummed that the sixaxis doesn't have rumble, but the thumbsticks are much better than the dual shock 2, and oddly enough I like the L2/R2 buttons quite a bit in racing games and such.

Me too. I do have to hand it too the Intellivision controller for the unique design and number of buttons, and "the Boss" controller for the C64 for durability.

Best ever? Definitely the 360. MS took all the best ideas from other controllers and was able to squeeze them into one comfortable package.

I typed out a response which stated that the DS3 was better than 360s controller on certain genres such as fighting, action, traditional RPG, sim racers, and certain sports games while 360 was better at FPS, arcade racers, fable type RPG/action adventure, but gamespot decided not to post it ...it was more well written before. Except for the poorly placed and poorly constructed D-pad. As much as it "isn't needed" it is a factor that at least I think keeps it from being the best controller ever.

 I hate that damn glitch so much, it actually forced me to CTRL+c everything I type in here, and pretty much everywhere.

I have fond memories of the SNES pad, and right now the 360 one feels really comfortable for me. Never tried the Dreamcast one, but it seems painful to use. *runs from the vehement, angered Dreamcast fanbase mob*

Whats so good about SNES controllers guys? For 2d games its brilliant but people, it cant play 3d games, so please keep it out of the top 3 (best of all time...? o_0 )

I think DS3 and 360 controllers are such a great combination to have you can have the best of w/e genre.
