There's usually about one game a year that really does an outstanding job of impressing me. Most recently it was Portal 2. I had hopes but I wasn't sure Valve could top the masterpiece that was Portal but I was absolutely proven wrong.

Metro 2033 here too. Especially when climbing the tower. Paused for more than 5 minutes and just stared at the post-apocalyptic Moscow. It was a beautiful, sad, emotional, extremely atmospheric and cold scenery.

I recently picked up Valkyria Chronicles II for PSP. In less than a week, I had put in 40 hours. Every aspect of the game is interesting and well refined. The story is great, and every character is multi-sided, and interesting. Even the annoying ones add something to the story. It's the first game to really blow me away in quite a while.

I guess I'm easy to amaze, at least if I understand the word right xD I put over 20 hours in DW: Gundam 3 (I had almost a week free to compensate my hours I worked to much) in just a few days because I love it so much :)

That game really was a masterpiece. But I have to say, there are lots of fantastic games I've played recently, but few that REALLY amazed me, like God of War 3, Uncharted 2, Demon's Souls, Killzone 3. However if I had to pick one it would be Uncharted 2, I hadn't been so amazed by a game since RE4.

I haven't been "amazed" but it was more like "wow that looks cool," moments. When I first walked into Ashenvale forest playing WOW beta I thought it looked really nice and couldn't wait to kill some elves and burn it all down.

The first game to really give me the "amaze" factor was Strider for the Sega Genesis. I remember playing it with a friend at the time not even really knowing if what we're doing is correct or where to go and slashing everything then going into this crazy room with no gravity and living through it all.

I'm pretty up-to-date with gaming news. The most recent 'amazed' moment was back in 2009. I went to my brothers place and he told me 'come and check out Batman Arkham Asylum on my PC'. I knew the name but never read any previews or reviews about it because I was like whatever... another superhero game... Man, that game totally blew my balls off! The production value was amazing.

I was amazed by how much better Killzone 3 played with the sharpshooter, as well as the quality of the 3D.

I don't know, it's been a while. Maybe my first week or two of WoW because coming into it I was actually pretty ignorant to what the game was (I just bought it because I liked the other Warcraft games  ) and it blew my mind when it hit me how huge and how alive it was. This generation, probably the closest was Uncharted 2, although I wouldn't say I was amazed, just that I was very impressed with it.

The most recent example of a game that amazed me has to be Mount and Blade Warband and Eve Online. The first because it didn't seem to deliver at first glance untill I played it and realised how incredibly awesome it is to lead your own army into battle. The latter because I didn't think an MMO like that was even possible. The sheer depth and freedom and size of the game simply amaze me. The true definition of a sandbox mmo imo :)

If you're talking about games that hooked me, then LA Noire was the most recent. Two solid weeks of talking to operators in a snappy three-piece suit before I finished the game; bliss.

Actual, genuine amazement however? I'm tempted to say Shadow of the Collossus, but that seems too long ago. Surely something else amazed me during that time?

Sadly, I'm going to have to go mainstream and say FIFA 11. Not necessarily the game itself, but what happens during the game. Most recently I was playing Career Mode with my brother. J De Guzman, Dutch winger, was lining up a freekick from 40 yards out. We were already two goals up, so I thought I'd take a chance. Three-thirds power, lots of curve... damn thing slammed into the top corner to make it three nil!

There were a few games I got for Christmas that were pretty amazing, including Rock Band 3. The Pro Guitar is awesome (I still need the Keyboard). Mafia II was also a sweet game, but it lacked a few things (such as free ride, or any online modes to be honest), a proper free mode (you have to click on the mission select to be able to just drive around), all of the mission buildings are locked also when you want to go to them, and the game was perhaps just a little too short for a GTA style game. One of the cool things about free roaming on games like this is re-visiting the story buildings and stuff, but as there was no free roam mode as already said, you couldn't do this. That doesn't mean the game was bad by any means, as it was awesome... actually, I feel like playing it now! lol. If Mafia III (if it comes out) fixes all of these "problems", it would be AMAZING!). I also haven't played L.A. Noire yet, so I can't comment on that. Homefront's multiplayer was pretty awesome as well... but the game that perhaps truely got my attention last and made me think AMAZING would be Red Dead Redemption, so just over a year ago. I just thought - Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood was also great, but it was nothing new. I also prefer ACII over Brotherhood. So yeah, I would have to go with Red Dead Redemption. Such a fine game world, amazing story, epic length and side missions etc. the game was just awesome! I also loved the music and the weather changes... you have to love the thunder and rain :P.

I just played Mortal Kombat 9, the first MK game I've played since MK2 (I dabbled in 3 but didn't get used to the Killer Instict style megacombo system), and I was pretty impressed, in all honesty I thought fighting games were a dying genre (as far as I was concerned) but this proved me otherwise, great story mode unlike the traditional fighting game where you get one character to play to the end with, they make you play as different characters which is a really good way to force me to value each character for what they offer (not sure if everyone would like that but I did for this game), lots of stuff to unlock, a lot of fun, and only cost me $20 with my Amazon coupon so great deal. I was pretty impressed... not sure how you value "amazed" but it's pretty darn cool.

Okami was the last time (a month ago). Other than that, Mass Effect, Braid, Cave Story impressed me. If you go a bit back in time, Zone of Enders: The 2nd Runner was amazing, as was Planescape: Torment.

The last time I was amazed by a game is probably when I got to Mexico in Red Dead Redemption and you're riding into the sunset with that song playing. I was just amazed by the game up to that point and knew so much more was to come in a new land. Just an amazing feeling.

The first time I was ever amazed by a game this gen though would be Assassin's Creed. When you are first approaching Jerusalem or whatever city you have to go to first and you crest that hill to see the city spread out beneath you.

I've played some pretty awesome games this year, but the last game that truly amazed me was LittleBigPlanet 2. No disrespect to Mass Effect 1 and 2, but LBP2 had that certain charm and the ability to constantly surprise you. I felt like i was playing a different game from level to level.

God of War 3, Heavy Rain and Halo 3 left my jaw on the floor several times as well.

Starcraft II. I thought I wasn't in to RTS games anymore... until it showed up and changed everything. Hadn't really played any RTS since Warcraft III, which I played non stop 03-05, when Worlf of Warcraft was released.

Guess I'm just a Blizzard fanboy :)

God of War 3 was probably the last game to truely surprise me and radiate that WOW factor. I just wrote it off as a stupid game, but I finally decided to get it after looking for some good PS3 exclusives, and it shocked me. I was sucked into the game from start to finish.
