What's your favourite JRPG?

I'm sure this has been asked plenty of times on this forum, but here we go again.

This is a hard one for me. Because, there's favourite hidden gems like Popolocrois that come to my mind. I also love what games I've played in the DQ series.

Without having to think about it too much it'd be FFVII overall. That game just did so many things right in my opinion. This is coming from the guy who only played it for the first time last year by the way. :P It has the best initial setup/introduction I've ever experienced. The stuff in Midgar was great. Pure excitement. Just a fantastic game overall.

I've only played one JRPG in my life. Tales of Symphonia on the Gamecube. I remember really enjoying it.

Chrono Trigger would be mine. Also high on my list would be:

- Chrono Cross

- Final Fantasy VI, VII, VIII, X

- Lost Odyssey

- Dragon Quest VIII

Lost Odyssey and FFX

1. Chrono Cross
2. Paper Mario TTYD
3. FF 6, 7, 8, 9

Phantasy Star.

Final Fantasy X is one of my best JRPG, and Final Fantasy XV.

Final Fantasy XV was so good, the story, the characters, the world, and especially the graphics.

Final Fantasy X had a groundbreaking story to it. When i beat the game, my whole heart was crushed... The ending had so many emotions to it, and that's why i'm putting Final Fantasy X on my favorite games list.

Hyperdimension Neptunia. It's become my obsession recently. Though it's not like most jrpgs, it's more a dungeon crawler but it has an awesome cast of characters and talented writers who really make the storylines fun. It also has a diverse range of games that go outside the jrpg genre.

For me, I really enjoy Lost Odyssey on Xbox 360 and it's one of those rare JRPG games that's hard to appreciate and underrated in my opinion.

Not only the best JRPG ever, but one of the best games ever made.

If you mean "JRPG" as in "spiky haired teenagers saving the world", I'd go with Tales of Symphonia (GC). I don't play a lot of them, since most of those games can be both good and really terrible, where the terrible part often manages to outshine the good. So much bullshit dialogue, slow mo gameplay, fetch quests and cliché stories to slog through. DQ11 was the last one I played, and it was ok..

@Litchie: I’m currently playing through DQ 11. It’s a good game but definitely not my favourite in the series.

Legend of Dragoon for sure. Just started playing it again after 15 years.

of course FF VII and waiting for the new remake comes out this year :)

Persona 5 and Valkyria Chronicles.

Definitely Valkyria Chronicles. Its such a beautiful game.

Persona 4 is probably the best experience in a jrpg I have had.

Baten Kaitos: Origins is one of 2 jrpgs I've played all the way to the end, and I'm a little sad how little it sold.

The other is Grandia 2.

I try to play them, but for some reason JRPG's just don't appeal to me. I think it's a combination of the game mechanics and overall Japanese video game art direction.

I came close to liking that turn-based tactics one where you play the squad of soldiers with anti-tank lances and rifles and stuff, but...no.

If Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy are the best the sub-genre has to offer, I'm afraid it's not for me.

Please note I'm not saying the games are bad, just not good for me.
