I have to say that Rpgs I played a lot of in the day, consoles and PC, many great ones, SSI, Enix, Origin and a bunch of others, but it was not until I played System Shock 2 when i started to go back and collect a ton of games I had missed and started getting into the genre.

First RPG I ever played was Dragon Warrior. I was pretty young at the time, and just didn't have the patience for turn-based RPGs, so I wasn't a big fan of it.

A few years down the road, though, I played Dragon Warrior IV and was enamored with it for weeks. That's the one that really pulled me into the genre.

Before it, though, I've always loved the games (and still do) that mixed RPG-elements into action games. It's always a more rewarding experience when your character/party grows throughout the game.

There were four, maybe five that got me into the genre: around the same time, Tales of Destiny 2 (Eternia), Grandia, Valkyrie Profile and the psx version of Diablo. and way before that, Suikoden.

ToD2, Grandia and VP sucked me in with great battle systems - the mix of real time/action feels and turn based battle elements - and great worlds.

Diablo made me realize that I like dungeon crawling and grinding.

All of these games made me fall for seeing my characters get stronger as they leveled up.

I played the heck out of Final Fantasy on the SNES, but at the time I didn't even know what an RPG was. It didn't occur to me it was an RPG, I just had a ton of fun with it. FF7 is probably what really got me into them. By then I was more aware of the unique style to the genre.

Man, I don't really remember. I'm thinking it was either Star Ocean the Second Story ( PS1) or Pokemon Yellow ( GBC ). I played a lot of action / adventure games on snes and genesis but don't remember playing too many rpg's on them.

That's an easy one. I started gaming on the NES, but I always considered RPG's to be 'for nerds' - usual dumb kid feelings, not realizing we are all nerds. Then I saw something in a magazine about Lunar 2 EB having a 6 hour ending (on the Sega CD). I assumed it meant an ending you watched and not one you played. So I went out and got Lunar 1, and that is where it all started. From that point on, RPG's have been my main choice so far as genres go (not the only choice, mind you, but the main one).

Single-handedly got me into RPG's after i'd spent my lifetime avoiding them due to having only previously sampled menu-based games (which i still hate).

Baldur's Gate followed soon after for me but Summoner got the ball rolling.

Final Fantasy for the NES got me into the genre but because of 1 save file and 2 older brothers rarely got a chance to play. There was also Ultima exodus on the NES which I probably played more.but didnt care for as much.

The first RPG I technically played was Pokemon Crystal.  but the one that "got me into it" was, surprisingly, the DS version of Final Fantasy IV.  My love of JRPGs has only come about recently, in the past two or three years.

Pokemon Red. I remember the day we (twin brothers and I) bought a GBC and Pokemon Red. Both my brothers took turns to exit the the main character's house but couldn't. When it was my turn, I was able to exit (the door mat). I shouted in joy which promptly led to one of the twins taking the handheld console from me :P Fun times, fun times :)

I think one of the Pokemon games introduced me to that style of gaming but I never really developed the interest till later when I played Okage Shadow King.

Dragon Warrior!  My neighbor had it, and we played all the way till the final boss.  Then one night---a book fell onto the system and erased the save...stupid no-code battery pack...never made it back that far again.

The idea of genres back then didn't really take shape in my mind till later...PSX actually, when games like FF7 and Lunar SST rather spelled out what an RPG "is"...  now you got me thinking how helpful, yet goofy, genre labels can be...and how they keep evolving.

Willow on the NES. It's more of a Zelda type of RPG, but that was the one that piqued my curiosity and caused me to value exploration and item management.

First JRPG was probably Dragon's Quest, but FF7 was what got me into the genre.

For WRPGs it was the original SSI D&D "Goldbox" games that I started on back in '88.

OMG Hillsfar! I can't believe I forgot about that game. I played pen and paper D&D when I was a kid, so I liked the other SSI games for their more "pure" D&D experience but Hillsfar had great graphics for the time and it was a minigame du jour.

A couple other games that I used to play but I couldn't remember how RPG-ey they were are Sentinel Worlds: Future Magic and Hard Nova. Party-based sci-fi space exploration games.

Hillsfar was quite good from what little I remember. The lock picking was the shit. The arena was a challenge. I dimly remember a horse riding minigame where you had to jump over things.

Pokemon Blue was, I believe, the first RPG I ever really played. So I have to give it some credit.

What really got me into RPGs though was the original Dot Hack series, on PS2.
