What is your Favorite Generation of Gaming?

Now I know these aren't exactly techinical generations of gaming, but Gamespot only allows 5 slots for polls, so I did the best I could with what I had.

For me, it's the 16-bit era. SNES was awesome. And Genesis was the pinnacle of Sega, IMO. Both systems were giving us the best they had and it was awesome. It was an age of great platformers, an age of awesome beat-em ups, the golden age of fighting games, great 2D RPGs, and the innovative years of shoot-em ups. A great time to be a gamer.

Could not have said it better myself. Although I had the Sega Genesis. I never had an SNES.

Anyway, ya the 16-bit era was the best.

Current generation for me.

As nice as Coleco and SNES and whatever else was, the PS3 and 360 are just amazing machines.

the 5th generation (PS1/Saturn/N64/3DO/Jaguar) era is my personal favourite, lots of great games on all systems,

btw I would have put the Dreamcast in with the last generation , and the TG16 with the MD/SNES, if you want to go by system capabilities.

Agreed, fifth gen was amazing. My favorites came out at that time...games like Xenogears or Chrono Cross. Simple as that.

16-bit era of course. You had 4 amazing unique systems and 2 CD ad-ons with great libraries of their own.

I'm going to have to say 3rd, sinceyou're asking for personal preferenceand not a critical judgement. Super Dodgeball, Legend of Zelda, Tecmo Bowl, Metroid, Dragon Warrior. Lot of memories reting games from Kroger and playing them with friends. Plus I was about 10 and everything was just more awesomer back then!

I'd say the 16-bit era, followed by the 32/64-bit era. Dreamcast is more a last gen console.

By a technical stand-point, yes, Dreamcast is in the same generation as PS2, XBox, & Gamecube. However, it was dead in the water by the time those systems came out (well, maybe PS2 could be argued, but it wasn't long after PS2's debut). The multiplatform games released for Dreamcast support this, they're all games released for PSX & N64. It seems to me that it belongs in the same generation that it competed with (N64, PSX).

The same thing could be said for TurboGrafx-16. Heck, I've even heard that it's not even techinally a 16-bit system. But I'm not a tech junkie, so I couldn't tell you why.

the main CPU for the TG16 is indeed an 8bit CPU, but the GPU is 16bit, and is actually capable of more colours onscreen then the Mega Drive and SNES, a look at the TG16 port of Street Fighter 2 will show this. regarding the Dreamcast , its not too different then the 3DO if that logic is applied, the 3DO didn't last long into the 5th gen either.

The16 bit era of gaming is my favorite Generation. Super Nintendo is my favorite console of all time. Even if this is the 7th generation. I was younger then and videogames were my main entertainment back in the 'golden age"

i put "The 3D Era (3DO, Sega Saturn, Playstation, N64, Dreamcast)"

It's a close one between that and 16-bit, but I go through phases. currently I'm playing PS1 and N64 quite a bit, but I do spend a good amount of time playing my Genesis and Atari Lynx too. I totally want to get a Dreamcast and 3DO, but I dont have the $$$ or the space to put them. I have a shelf next to my tv that is already crowded holding my genesis, ps1, ps2, NES, N64, and a few games.

The 3D area without a doubt.

The roots of the big title games like Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid etc. O memories... and even more memories of playing NFS HOT PURSUIT and Shenmue.

I second that. I loved 5th generation. I have always been a gamer since 1989 but I didn't start getting crazy into it until this generation because of the N64.

hard to choose, I know the dreamcast was the hottest time in videogames because until then and since then has there never been a bigger change in games and graphics. my jaw dropped when I first saw ready to rumble on it or shenmue.

however I'd say overall looking back the 32/64 bit era was the best with more diverse games. many crap games but also many a+ games. that's the difference with today. gaming has gotten better overall, since no really bad games are released anymore but the absolute perfect games aren't released anymore either. in the top ten favorite games I've ever played I'd say no current gen game is in that lost except maybe assassins creed 2.

I don't know about your first statement because I think there was a huge change in graphics from last gen to this gen. There are still just as many crappy games that get released as there was back then too.

It has to be the 3D Generation, as I grew up with the Playstation and Nintendo 64, but I still acknowledge and agree that the 16 bit era of the SNES and Mega-Drive was the golden era of gaming, hence why I am currently hunting down a used SNES console :)

The 16 bit console wars...

Super Nintendo: "Genesis! I am your FATHER!"

Genesis: "That's not true.... THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE!"

Super Nintendo: "Search your feelings, you KNOW it be true. Hell, if you don't believe me, ask your mother, Atari."

Genesis: "NOOOOOOOOOO! NOOOOOO!"

XD, it's probably not funny, but makes me laugh nonetheless.

I was going to say the beginning of the 3D era but then I realised that Dreamcast is not a 5th gen system, it came out last gen! So yeah your poll is WRONG, lol. Ok I choose last gen simply because it was the only gen I bought 2 systems whereas I usually stick to one system a gen; First Megadrive, then Playstation but in the 6th generation I went with Dreamcast and Playstation 2. Of course last gen did have some of the best games that I have ever played.

16 bit followed closely by 8 bit. Although I have enjoyed every generation, the SNES, GEN, era reined supreme. Almost all the games were groundbreaking and fresh (exclude 80% of sports titles). You didnt have a whole lot of the 100 clone titles you have had since the PS1 era. 8 bit made my list because I grew up with them. I collect games for every system (even consoles I dont own yet :0), but especially for the NES, SNES, and GEN. I own over half the entire US NES library so it had to get some love :) ..... just not as much as 16 bit though :P

To add more, I loved the PS, N64 era... and the PS2 era... and... ok, every generation had their gems, their clunkers, high points and low points. Now if they would have made a console produced by a partnership of Sega, Nintendo, and Playstation, then took Playstation's controller and interface, Nintendos lovability, and Segas soundtracks and marketed some of the ideas better. I would go with that :P Anyways though the 16 bit era didnt save gaming... the 8 bit era did, but with that being said its hard to argue that the 16 bit era wasnt better even though my nostalgia kicks me in the butt and I feel like a traitor to my earlier childhood games... Oh well, screw it, they all win :) I give the edge to 16 bit simply because it shaped a lot of modern gaming, and there isnt a whole lot you will find today that didnt have its roots in 16 bit or even a little earlier.

I would have to say 8 bit. NES & Sega is all I knew as a kid. I loved the games of that era that have never been duplicated to this day. 16 bit is a close 2nd though
