Goldeneye 007, while the graphics were still reasonably good.
That's tough, because the games that blew me away at the time haven't aged well. Over the years, I've spent insane amounts of time on football manager, civilisation series and online games like Battlefield 2 and 4, COD4. I loved command and conquer, Warcraft and the Forza series, but I guess the game that impressed me the most when it came out was half life 2...
Multiplayer Battlefield 2
Singleplayer F.E.A.R.
Just like random Matt said there's much more games to choose but to me these two titles have superb gameplay and still hold up today they are ahead of their time.
i genuinely have no idea how to rank titles that span over 30 years or so of playing video games. i'd struggle to make a top ten in no particular order
This sums it up for me as well, I think I would struggle with a top 50, narrowing it down to a single game would be completely impossible.
Dark Age of Camelot, 2001-2002.
The asymmetric, open-world PvP was spectacular. The reason it was the absolute best there was and ever will be (by my assessment) is simple.
There was no such thing as voice chat, gold sellers, cheat engine, micro-transactions, or professional gamers (outside of Starcraft and Lineage). I'm so grateful to have been a part of that brief moment in history.
That itch, by definition, can never be scratched again.
It's hard to narrow it down to 1, but I'd have to go with Half-Life 2... followed closely by Bioshock.
GTAV. It's the highest quality game all round. Nothing comes close.
-well, perhaps Horizon Zero Dawn. But GTAV is still the winner by large margin.
Breath of the Wild
Before that probably Mario Galaxy
Before that Probably Maximum Carnage, my favorite Genesis game and the first video game I paid for with my own money
DOOM 2 for the PC and Metroid Prime for the GC.
But.....the remake of the original Resident Evil (IMO it's better than RE4) on GC is close as well. THATS how you do a remake and a survival horror game. I'm playing through Baldurs Gate (enhanced edition) again and absolutely loving it again. It's rising fast as I'm sure BG2 will be as well. And how the hell did I forget Starcraft/Brood War, still the unquestioned king of RTS!?
Diablo 2 and original Guild Wars deserve a mention since they occupied most all of my gaming in the 2000's, and I was gaming alot.
1. MMORPG: Star Wars: The Old Republic (mainly, because it has cut-scenes for every mission or side-mission, and you can choose your answers, so, just like any other RPG, but it's on the Internet).
2. Action-Adventure: Uncharted 4: A Thief's End (probably. The story was appealing, new game mechanics like stealth was introduced, no supernatural element in the game).
3. Sports: March Madness 99. Played it as a kid on PS1. I remember it, cause you could destroy the basket's glass with your dunks. Plus, it had WNBA teams as well, which over time I missed in other NBA Live (2K) games.
4. RPG: Mass Effect 2 (probably. It expanded and corrected everything, which was wrong with ME1 and made it better).
FPS: Half-Life; F.E.A.R; FarCry
RPG: Deus Ex; Vampire Bloodlines; System Shock 2
cRPG: Planescape Torment; Fallout 1&2
TPS: Mafia; Max Payne; Riddick EfBB
Stealth: Thief I & II; SC Chaos Theory
Oof, tough call.
Half-Life series
Homeworld series (including Deserts of Kharak)
Command and Conquer series up until C&C 4
Deus Ex might just be my actual favorite, like if you put me on the spot and demanded to no I'd be like "uhhhhh....ummmmm....DEUS EX! NOW leave me alone!"
Thief 1 and 2
KOTOR 1 and 2, plus SWTOR (it's as close as we are going to get to KOTOR 3 until KOTOR 3)
Max Payne 2 PC version
Mortal Kombat 2 arcade
GTA SA it hasn't age well but at the time 04 it was the best game I ever have played
Sleeping Dogs criminally underated it deserved a sequel more then any game besides HL2.
And of course many more.
My usual top 5 is:
Banjo Tooie
Jet Set Radio Future
Gravity Rush 2
Persona 4 Golden
Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion
Out of all of those I think an argument could be made that Banjo Tooie is objectively the best. It's accessible to a wide audience, has aged fairly gracefully, is(relatively) glitch free, and has a charming story.
If anyone cares, before the 2 recent entries(Persona 4 Golden and Gravity Rush 2) were on there, their spots were held by Shining Force 2 and Borderlands.
Oblivion also tends to get swapped in and out with Skyrim. I personally think that Skyrim is a better "game" and I have definitely put more hours into it, but I hold more fondness for Oblivion, and it will always hold a special place in my heart. Either way both of them have well over 600 hours playtime with me, so they definitely belong.
ok,
No one has mentioned Skyrim or Witcher 3....huh
I'm more surprised The Last of Us hasn't been mentioned, two years ago 90% of Users would be singing that song lol.
And well. . sandbox games are popular, but have since ruined a lot of great franchises. Much like the recent trend of battle royale modes, these design choices are rarely a thing people call the sole greatest experience ever.
Skyrim many praise for being a modding haven, so the core game rarely is anyone's favorite experience (coming from someone who quite enjoyed vanilla Skyrim); Oblivion and Morrowind are better RPGs. RPG being the key word, because while Skyrim improved dungeon and map diversity, it almost removed everything else The Elder Scrolls was known for.
And The Witcher 3 fans all chat about"I love the story"/ "graphics". Rarely does anyone bring up the gameplay, because when you break it down TW3 is a jack-of-all-trades but master of none. I never finished The Witcher 3 granted, though in an older thread gave someone advice to purchase The Witcher 3 over Fallout 4 based on my impressions with both titles.
If you like sandbox experiences? you probably already have both Skyrim and The Witcher 3. However I think few would think they're the best amongst so many gems in the gaming industry.
There a lot of games that I hold dear to my heart but FF Tactics on the PSOne was a game that I played so many times. It is just still very good.
The story is nice and very Game Of Throne-y
The music is nice and fit perfectly what is going on
Cool weapons and caracters you can unlock by doing side quests and test stuff. Cloud was in the game !
Strategy !!! You have to think before you act, check how long will it take before your spell or hability will work and if your ennemy will move before you can ... or if someone else can kill you.
Disgaea 1. It's still my favorite game since it launched. It wowed me like no other game ever has.
I'm excited to see the Remake, hopefully it makes e3.
Same here. I will spent 100s of hours again. I assume it'll look like D2, hopefully even higher res. And I'd love to see a lot of cameos, including female Laharl and the staff from D5.
